    New Logo - Your Thoughts?!

Ok, here's my idea for a more "metal" version of the logo. I kept it fairly clean, though I could see it with more spikes or weathering, too. I have a plain version and one with a metal texture. Once the letter forms are in place, it's easy to apply any kind of texture, lighting, or outline to the logo. What do you think? Worth working on?

    What's on your mind?

Went to an award ceremony honoring all the students in our school district who scored distinguished on state testing in @ least one of three subjects Math, Reading & Science. My son James, he's in 4th grade, received the highest honor for getting distinguished in all three. Was a very proud moment.

Whether you love or hate Cannibal Corpse, their penchant for churning out accessible, fun and consistent DM can't be denied. Yes when they suck they really do suck (Gallery of Suicide), but even if technically never more complicated than most Kinder egg toys there's always a familiarity to CC albums that appeals. I get those that hate that familiarity. If you prefer to become lost in a Portalesque vortex when enjoying your extreme metal then the obvious churn of CC won't be for you. However, for every complex and archaic DM record in my collection I like to have a fair amount of surety too (someone will be along in a minute to replace "surety" with "safety" no doubt) and "Red Before Black" is as familiar to me after a few listens as most of the band's previous outpyt. "Red Before Black" reinvents no wheels, either in terms of DM in general or the CC specific brand. It is naive to say it has no variety as this simply isn't true, the pace of "Remaimed" for example goes from a slight itch to a raging STD style of a rash. Opening track "Only One Will Die" comes for you like a deranged serial killer, devoid of any bizarre macabre master plan to use your body in some horrific piece of death art, just driven instead by the need to rip your head off and shit down your neck. "Firestorm Vengeance" starts like a thrash track, chopping away at the bars like a lumberjack on LSD defacing a tree. The mastery of "Scavenger Consuming Death" is undeniable as it chugs away sitting imperiously glaring at you like some cocksure domestic pet who just shat in your sock drawer! Sonically, the album seems a little more developed than usual without ever dissolving into the territory of "guitar wankery". My only instrumentation grumble is the slightly soft edge to the drum sound which taps along instead pummelling in unison with the rest of the activity on display here. Whilst still being relevant (and it has achieved this without becoming "core" orientated either) and it staying in my head a lot better than the last two Suffocation records (for example) it sets nothing alight. As solid a DM record as this is my face isn't torn off at any point, my ears aren't battered and my neck doesn't get sore due to some over-exuberant headbanging session. Most tracks do dip away unfortunately. Let's take nothing away from the effort though. To not be producing shit metal at this stage in your career is an achievement in itself, I just start to question if motions are starting to just be gone through?

I realized I never posted the finished version of that playing card painting here, so here it is:

Here's some of the goofy shit I was wearing last night. I realized that I'd accidentally dressed up like my persona from Ash. Made me chuckle this morning when I saw the picture. Leather pants and high boots should be inferred.

    Your Artwork

I finally got started on a piece for a playing-card-themed art show a friend is putting together this fall. I'm not used to working this small, and I have to say it was a lot of fun, I was able to get a lot done in a fairly short amount of time. The top half wound up accidentally bearing a strong resemblance to my brother, so I made the bottom half a self portrait.

    What's on your mind?

Arrived home yesterday from a busy week to an email from my Director saying he had asked the board to authorise a further pay rise to me (the second in 6 months). I have that awkward British thing around receiving praise and rewards that makes me unsure of how to react or what to say. P.S I think this means I am promoted to Advanced Practitioner of Virgin Slaying

    What Are You Listening To?

Happy I busted out the Satyricon CDs, inspired by Macabre's recent exploration. The Shadowthrone is still my favorite, but I hadn't really listened to DMT or ND in at least a couple years. Their riffy approach and almost Viking-metal melodic sensibility still mark out their early albums as some of my favorite stuff from the scene. I'm celebrating my ten-thousandth post here by drinking a couple of beers and listening to My Dying Bride - As The Flower Withers. This place has been important to me over the past couple of years. It's been a pleasure getting to know you guys and gals, and I've not only discovered new music, but gotten back into some old favorites because of our conversations. Cheers to all my friends here.

My boss phoned me earlier and informed me I have been awarded a pay rise. A year of hard work has paid off (literally).

Congrats JFK - keep up the good work. The only way I have ever been able to keep a woman has involved the use of surgical tools. My news, just got an email from my Director and he has promoted me and handed me a nice pay rise. Just what the doctor ordered.

    What's on your mind?

Just got back from a nice vacation in Sweden. I really miss it so much, and my heart is aching to be back there. The cold kicked my fuckin' ass though. I celebrated Lucia with an amazing family that welcomed me as one of their own and even performed a Luciatåg in costume, and sang for me to give me a taste of the culture and they made a Julbord for me (christmas table feast) and we all decorated the tree together. It was magical and wonderful and waugh! I miss it / them so much. They went all out to give me a really traditional Swedish Lucia and I'm feeling so special and loved. I also got to enjoy an epic viking feast at Aifur in Stockholm which was just... fucking amazing. Everyone is seated on longhall tables and benches covered in plush reindeer furs. Viking weaponry and art all over the walls, a longship suspended from the ceiling, everything lit by candles and lanterns, food eaten with simple iron smithed utensils and served on slabs of wood, live entertainers on drums, hurdy gurdy, etc. The mead flowed, the fucking food... holy shit it was phenomenal... the mead was great too. God damnit you guys. Other highlights of the trip was partying at these three Icelandic brothers' house, ton of people there, all cool as fuck and Swedes know how to party (once they're drinking and there are no more awkward silences that Swedes are so well known for). Also had an epic tabletop gaming night with like 8 of my friends and of course the usual walking / exploring / sightseeing / shopping / dining. And fika. So, so, so, so much fika. BLECH. I don't know how they can eat cake every day, it's just too much. But I definitely appreciated the coffee and I was polite enough to taste the various cakes, one of which is this magical fucking unicorn of a cake called Budapeststubbe and I had two bites and pretty much died. That fucking good. I left my heart back in frost-covered, sparkly, icy Sweden. I miss it so much already.
