...just waiting on Dead's analysis of Ukraine invasion. War porn!

It just occurred to me, western media is painting Putin as a madman, so why doesn't he just say "let me do what I want or I will nuke you."

I mean, he is inferring that; so just say it.

What can you actually do to stop a nuclear power? Sanctions? "No thanks, I'll nuke you."

Seems like we're entering an endgame here.

My wife is terrified, but she listens to jazz. In these situations I think metal really takes the edge off.

We are due a full analysis...

Seems we are entering the logical progression of the last few years. Was only a matter of time before one of these knucklefucks took the next step whether it was Russia with one of their previous vassals, China with Taiwan, Pakistan and India, Right vs. Left in the States, etc. I think nuclear conflict is still a low possibility, but massive loss of life , misery, and economic ruin is much more likely than it was last week. I just don't see the gain here though. Gain territory from people who hate you at the cost of your economy and suffering of your people. Makes no sense. I would think that the oligarchs would suffer enough financially that they would exert the appropriate pressure to prevent what is happening now, but what the hell do I know?

Anyway, I agree with you 100%. This is why our dark lord created metal. Nothing else satisfies the weary anxious soul quite like it.

I doubt any big red buttons get pressed also.  For all the cock comparisons going on right now none of NATO are putting troops on the ground in Ukraine.  More a case of "Ukraine?  Here's some bullets and guns to fire them with.  Best of luck.  We'll be in Estonia and Lithuania, watching!"

Yeah, that is my point though. Being a nuclear power enables you to act with impunity, except for invading another nuclear power. I mean, America has been doing it for years. The world may as well be carved up right now according to who has nuclear weapons or not. Fatty Jong-Un has the right idea.

It's amazing it has taken this long to figure it out. I guess it is just down to the last world war being barely in living memory anymore. History always repeats but before the last war the option for total annihilation was not on the table.

China will be looking on with interest. Assuming it decides it has taken enough of the world's wealth by allowing greedy western cunts to get all their products made there at the expense of their own working class and industrial base, there is literally nothing to stop China invading Taiwan and Japan to test all the weapons they've been building.

The mainstream commentary certainly agrees that Putin's strategy doesn't make any sense. There is no reality in which this ends well for him.

Russia has more than enough territory. Ukraine has massive amounts of natural resources. Massive ammounts of natural gas, 1.09 trillion cubic meters, second only to Norways 1.53 tcm, as well as petroleum. Ukraine is also the leading nation for reserves of iron (one fifth of the world's total iron) coal, titanium, manganese and other non-metallic raw materials. So just like the Gulf War was the West needing to secure the Arabian oil, this is Russia attempting to secure Ukraine's natural resources. End of story.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Our cell phones and computers cannot currently be made without using many precious metals and minerals that are in much shorter supply than oil and fossil fuels will ever be in ours or even in our great grandchildren's lifetimes. Copper, tellurium, lithium, cobalt, manganese, tungsten...the list goes on. Your average smart phone contains up to 62 different types of metals. Not to mention silicon. Can't make any of this shit without that. These materials are now rapidly becoming more vital and valuable than fossil fuels.

so....are we gonna have a WW3 here?

Great question that no one knows the answer to. This thing could spiral into the rest of Europe, and then other countries like Iran, Israel, Turkey, India, Pakistan, DPRK and especially China, vis a vis Taiwan, could use it opportunistically to grab land and settle scores. That, all at once, would probably look like WWIII, with or without any nuclear exchanges.

Or this could remain confined to Ukraine, and the other regional security issues would continue simmer or boil mostly independently.

There is every reason to believe that we will descend, eventually, into a global conflict. There is no sustained history or pattern of human existence that isn't tangential or flat-out defined by violent conflict with other humans. So yes, it is inventible that sooner or later we will have WWIII, barring a pretty massive evolutionary change to how we organize, educate and produce and distribute resources.

Someone hit the reset buttons, I think humanity is soft locked. Seriously are we just hard wired for conflict or something?

If history has shown us anything it is that humans live for conflict. We seek it out and thrive on it because we get bored and complacent without it. If we can't find any conflict then we'll manufacture some.

I doubt it will get to a WW3 situation.

For starters Australia can't afford to get over there, with the bowser price skyrocketing we can't afford to refuel our ships. New Zealand will be in a similar position. Now if we had a ship that ran on bullshit our politicians could power it for eternity!

With all due repect Vic, we don't really need the ANZAC crew to have ourselves a world war. We only invited yiz to the last two to be polite. You guys can sit this one out. We'll call you if China starts a world war down there in your neck of the woods and we need someplace to park our planes or repair our ships or something.

Exactly. The world superpowers (including the US obviously) have no compunction whatsoever about making up flimsy excuses for taking whatever they want. The strong will always prey on the weak.

I knew someone would say this and totally ignore the piss take that it was.

If you want somewhere to park your F35's I hear that the South China Sea still has plenty of vacant space.

I wasn't ignoring your piss take Vic, I was following your lead and running with it! Riffing on a theme.

We do seem to be the two "dad joke" guys here on the board after all. I think people have figured out not to take us seriously all the time. We think we're funny but I'm sure most of these dudes are rolling their eyes at the Boomers half the time. There's ThatDoc as well but his sense of humor is so fucking droll, he's more like my straight man than a joke teller.

One of my brothers-in-law is the dad joke king of my family. It took my kids until the mid teenage years to work out that most of what I say is droll bullshit. When people say 'but you said...' my reply is that I say a lot of stuff and not all of it should be taken seriously. My professional persona was different.

On more serious notes and echoing the now famous heroic words - Putin go fuck yourself. The evil fuck is delusional.

And I am stuck at home as my wife is recovering from Covid - Omicron I presume because although she has been the sickest I have ever known her to be, she was never in mortal danger and has stayed home. Interestingly I am perfectly well. We are both triple vaccinated...

I've managed to convince myself that all those people are laughing with me, not at me.

I used to work for a doctor, old bastard then, real old bastard now (he's older than GMG!) He actually studied in the UK as an engineer but in the 80's heard we had a doctor shortage so he went back to school, got qualified, up sticks and moved here. I'm sure he's good at his job because he can manage 3 8am appointments all at the same time in different rooms. But he was very droll too and for a smart man many many jokes went straight over his head.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
