Just reading that Chris Holmes has cancer in the neck and throat.

From his wife:

This post is not easy to write because of the personal nature of it and we would rather you hear it directly from us before stories and rumours start to circulate and by respect for all of you who love and support Chris, we feel that this is exactly what we need at this time.

Recently Chris was diagnosed with a cancer in throat and neck but the medical team have assured us there has been no metastasis and this is a good news. He will have to start as soon as possible a treatment of 7 weeks.

Poor bugger, hope he gets better.

Poor bugger but he certainly didn't look after himself.

So after six years with the old iPhone finally gave up the ghost… And can I just say the brain-dead moron who decided to get rid of the home button really should’ve been fired. Yeah that’s right I’m back with my petty complaints about the life of a blind man LOL

Hey man, nice to see you back around, hope you've been alright.

Yes no complaints, life just been generally keeping me busy haven’t had a lot of time to stop bye, hope you and the family are doing well?

We're alright, thank you... You probably missed this a while back but we've got a new baby due in about a month, so that's the biggest thing on our minds right now. Other than that, just trucking along with artwork, playing a bit of music, and trying to stay active here at home. Glad you're doing alright.

That’s great man, congrats and hope all goes well. I’m about a month away from being an uncle so it looks like March will be a month full of little devils entering the world LOL

This isn’t easy to type but my old guide dog passed today. Fifteen years of the best life any dog could want. Never going to forget him.

So sad to hear that.  I lost my old pooch on 29-12-2020.  Despite getting a new pooch, I still think about her every day and some days it hits me harder than most.

Animals are amazing!

----

Need to vent so apologies,,,

Money might not make you happy, but lack of money does make you unhappy.  My finances have not improved as my wife still doesn't comprehend basic maths and I am under a lot of stress.

What makes me miserable is I no longer spend any money on myself despite me being the main breadwinner - I am lucky to spend $5 a week on myself (usually entry fee for my gaming club and I've even been avoiding that).  We're on a combined after tax income of nearly $5,000 a fortnight and I can't afford a measly $5 to push toy soldiers with my mates.

Can't even afford to go to a bloody doctor to organise anti-anxiety or anti-depression meds and couldn't afford the medication anyhow!

And when I tell the wife she literally glazes over and tells me I should spend whatever money I want to.  She has a 6.92 grade point average at university but does not comprehend the simple fact that you should not spend more than you earn.

And despite booming economy Aussies continue to officially become poorer and exploitation is increasingly the norm.

Wages up 2.3%, official inflation up 3.5%.

Time for a socialist revolution me thinks.  Rich and capitalists only understand why equality and fairness are important when their necks are in a noose.

I’m here for it, close the corporate tax loopholes, ban corporations from donating to politicians, honestly there’s no reason 13% of Aussies should live below the poverty line.

Totally agree!  Also need to:

1. Reduce ability for individuals/corporations to shift cash/profits overseas

2. Reduce immigration flows to manageable levels.

3. Increase marginal tax rates for high earners

4. Re-empower unions and increase protections for worker whilst smashing employers with gaol time if they get caught underpaying/exploiting workers.

5. Increase social benefits to unemployed (current one of lowest in the OECD)

6. Ban non-Australian residents from donating to political parties.

7. Ban non-Australian residents from acquiring property

8. Refocus economy on environmentally sustainable manufacturing and high skill jobs instead of low skill easily exploited services like tourism that just trash the environment.

9. Nationalise all key services - education, health, aged car, roads, rail, gas, oil refining (which is nearly not done in this country anymore).

10. Introduce better maternity leave (currently measly 3 months at unemployment benefit) and nationalise child care and offer it for free.

11. Introduce independent corruption body with actual teeth and long term gaol terms for any politician/public servant being found guilty of corruption.

12. Introduce functional regulation and protection for consumers in all industries (currently many industries "self regulate") and especially banking, insurance, housing rental and building.

13. Reintroduce government house construction programs for low income earners.

Currently both major parties are against all of these things.

That’s why we need to vote green, the only way to push government into acting in the best interests of the people is to consistently vote progressive. I will be the 1st to admit the greens aren’t perfect but given the choice of munching on and over ripe orange the greens in this analogy, or the turd sandwich that is labour and liberal I know which one I’m going with.

I do vote Green as well as select independents.

I did vote Labor in last state election simply because they promised to build several hundred homes to alleviate housing pressures (growing homelessness even among people who work, out of control rents and out of control house prices in Australia's poorest state).

The idiocracy that is the masses voted in Liberals because of how they handled COVID which they instantly fucked up by opening up borders and COVID went through the roof in a state with worst health system in the country.

A lot of idiot Tasmanians are also completely right wing ("freedumb") despite the fact that they are on government benefits or employed by government in social services.

Your average Australian is the most eager shit eater on the planet.  These people love to be butt raped by government and corporations in the hope that one day they too will be rich (aka aspirational voters).

What the government does here would cause riots and revolutions elsewhere.

Yeah at state level it’s labour for me, The Greens just don’t have enough presents in South Australia, but try convincing the brainwashed masses that the Greens are the party they should be voting for. Hell I spent half a year trying to convince certain family members the vaccine wasn’t a government conspiracy. Not just the US dealing with anti-vaccine bullshit unfortunately.

It's not??

Shit, imagine my embarrassment. I've spent the last year trying to convince people it was a conspiracy because I thought that was the side we were supposed to be on.

The real conspiracy is the 40 years of destroying equality and eroding people's rights.  It's what former Finance  Minister called "a deliberate design feature of our economic infrastructure"  (https://theconversation.com/ultra-low-wage-growth-isnt-accidental-it-is-the-intended-outcome-of-government-policies-113357).

Also the other "conspiracy" is literally transferring hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes to the rich via superannuation rebates and other tax/income offsets.

Or transfer blame for poverty on the poor.

Or protect fossil fuel industries and accuse anyone opposed to them as being anti jobs.

Or destroy Medicare by freezing rebates which at some point will be worth nothing given inflation.

Or destroy social welfare by keeping it extremely low so it too at some point will no longer be worth anything.

Or I could keep going forever...

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
