Control Denied - The Fragile Art of Existence (1999)

I neglect this album too much by rarely, if ever, listening to it. And yet, I'm a fan of Death and the great Chuck Chuldiner, I know that he composed this album, I recognise the composer's touch, but there you go...

Great call with the newest Black Label Society album!  I've really enjoyed that one.  I need to get back into some of the older stuff, like "Sonic Brew" and "Stronger Than Death".  I appreciate you putting those guys back on my radar!

I've never heard it. My buddy back in NZ, who was an obsessive death/Schuldiner fan, said "it's weak Death riffs with shit vocals." Hardly a glowing endorsement.

Psyched to hear that. The last one was great, I think it's second only to Words That Go Unspoken for me.

I might be starting an unsubstantiated rumour. I periodically check the official website and facebook to find updates (l don't do that for ANY band so I obviously crave 'cocke pretty hard).

There is not much info on it, I figure it can't be that far away.

They are playing the whole of Choronzon next week in Manchester. I'd probably go but my wife is in Paris for the weekend which leaves me baby sitting. Next year my daughter is 14 which might be just old enough to drag to gigs. Which she will hate and disown me for. It'd be worth it!

Totally worth it. Who knows, she might even like it once she sees a live show or two.

That's how I felt about it too for years, then one day it clicked (or maybe I just became numb to the stuff I didn't like through repetition), and now I really like it a lot.

And Chuck was someone with enormous talent. We know that, at the end of the day, he found himself too confined to the Death Metal style he'd established with Scream Bloody Gore, and Control Denied enabled him to break out of his discomfort zone. If he were still around, I'm sure he would have continued to bring us a great deal of pleasure through his music, whether it be Death Metal or any other style.

Did someone say new Akercocke? I wasn't tracking that but definitely has my full attention now. I wasn't the biggest fan of Renaissance when it came out, but it has definitely been a grower and now sits between 2-3 in their discog for me. Nothing will ever touch Words in my book, but I'll be stoked for anything new from the 'cocke.

Today: All Them Withches discog on rotation. Going to see them tonight and not totally familiar.

See. I've started a rumour which has no basis in reality. Yes, they have been working on a new album, but it seems to have been on and off for a few years at least.

ATW are an awesome live band. They've got a jammy feel and there's something about that John Bonham-esque drum sound that just does it for me. Much better as a four piece, but I presume the keyboard player is still in the band and didn't quit again. Enjoy it bigly.

I saw them in NYC at the Bowery Ballroom. I remember it was March, gonna say 2019. Buddy and I made the trek into Manhattan, it's about 90 minutes from here in the goatmobile to get downtown, 2 hours because I had to pick him up. Was really psyched for that show too and then lo and behold turned out the keyboard player had quit and that just all but ruined it for me. That Hammond was such a big part of their sound, and it was just missing. Probably wouldn't drive 90 minutes to go see them again now as they kinda lost their way on the last couple of albums I heard. But glad to hear the keyboard player came back and I hope my boy Navy has himself a good ole time. They really are a good band even though I really only like the first 3 or 4 albums. Just don't get upset Nave when you see how the dude's mutilated that Rick. I should've seen them in 2016 on the Dying Surfer tour. They were on top of their game.

You have crushed me Jono. I shall wander the rest of the day destitute of all hope and motivation.

And I'm going to have to have a talk with said mutilator tonight in person about appropriate Rickenbacher treatment. I will not tolerate such nonsense. Go fuck up a Fender Jazz or something less sacred.

For some reason it's been a while since I listened to BLS too. Not sure why but I plan to remedy that today.

On the next episode of blackened interiors, our decorators subjugate majestic kitchens. Stay tuned.

Joking aside, though, this album is rock solid. Happens to be a chilly rainy day where I'm at, and this serves as good accompaniment.

I support that decision wholeheartedly!  Groove metal is my favorite sub-genre, but with a particular leaning toward southern groove metal.  The bluesy, southern angle on the sound is my bread-and-butter, so these guys have always been right up my alley.  "Sonic Brew" is a fantastic piece of work, and I played it immediately after seeing your post about BLS earlier this morning!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
