What's on your mind?

Bloody strawberries, they either go wild or do nothing, I've had years where I couldn't keep up with them, then the following year almost nothing. This year I've tired several different varieties, I don't think I'll get a bumper crop first year but hopefully next year as the runners take over it will improve.

Last year was a bad year for cucumbers, too much moisture in the air. Part of the reason I'm trying cute-cumbers this year is because they grow a lot quicker and you pick them at about 10cm so potentially they should grow a bit better if it's a muggy year.

I'm trying to grow an espalier apple tree across the old vine that used to grow grapes. Idea being that once it's grafted you can have several different apples growing off the one vine like tree and potentially have apples most of the year round.

I found them a few years ago and they are great little things to add to salads or just eat off the plant. They also self seed really well so they come back every year. Depending on what size you pick them as to what they taste like.

What do you call rocket?

Haha, I remeber being in some joint called Ribs & Rumps Restaurant in Olympic Park and seeing "rocket" on the menu. I had to ask my mother in law what rocket was. We call it arugula here in the states.

Cunting must be a Tassie thing. I don't even think a Canberrian would use that word.

It's a Slayer word:

Quote

SOUTH OF HEAVEN

An unforeseen future nestled somewhere in time.
Unsuspecting victims no warnings, no signs.
Judgment day the second coming arrives.
Before you see the light you must die.
Forgotten children, conform a new faith,
Avidity and lust controlled by hate.
[The] Never ending search for your shattered sanity,
Souls of Damnation in their own reality.
Chaos rampant,
An age of distrust.
Confrontations.
Impulsive habitat.
Bastard sons beget your cunting daughters,
Promiscuous mothers with your incestuous fathers.
Engreat souls condemned for all eternity,
Sustained by immoral observance a domineering deity.
Chaos rampant,
An age of distrust.
Confrontations.
Impulsive sabbath.
On and on, south of heaven
On and on, south of heaven
On and on, south of heaven
On and on, south of heaven
The root of all evil is the heart of a black soul.
A force that has lived all eternity.
A never ending search for a truth never told.
The loss of all hope and your dignity.
Chaos rampant,
An age of distrust.
Confrontations.
Impulsive habitat.
On and on, south of heaven
On and on, south of heaven
On and on, south of heaven
On and on, south of heaven

I've heard it's been catching on with the banana benders lately.

Yeah but they lick cane toads.

Man I wish Australia was like that.

I was in tropical Queensland on an island resort this year during the best month possible (August).  It rained nearly every day despite being the dry season and part of the island was unwalkable due to sandblasting wind!   Water was cold!

And certainly no hot young bikini clad babes*, all the beaches we went to were full of us family types.

I still had a great time and it was one of my best holidays.

*This is the same fantasy I associate with 1980s glam metal.

Question for anyone whose been on a 70,000 Tons of Metal festival - was the weather good and was there plenty of hot young metal babes in bikinis or was it all overweight middle age blokes who have never heard of deodorant?

And a shit album at that.  Their worst one in my opinion.

In any case cunting is in the Urban Dictionary which makes it a proper word IMO.

I remember when the first 70,000 Tons happened and there was memes all over the place using the Simpsons cruise ship episode.

But there is a reason why they choose the time of year they do for these things and it's not because they expect bad weather, but it could happen. Besides it's a fucking huge ship, I went on a cruise a few years ago, smaller ship that they use for 70,000 and the bad weather was barely noticeable. It's certainly not something you'd want to pay for and spend a week complaining about, ex Australia it was about $3500 for a half decent room that you can stretch your feet in last time I priced it.

I didn't suggest it wasn't a word I just suggested that not even someone from Canberra would use it.

You'd be surprised.

And arugula? WTF indeed.

Well Doc in the states, rockets are phallic shaped things made with steel that we like to shoot up into space and send around to the moon and shit. So you see that name was already taken. I s'pose there's a lot of things we could have called arugula, chair, truck, broom, snake, vegemite, porcupine, kettle...but those names were already taken as well. So we just call it what it is to avoid any confusion.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
