What's on your mind?

Well now I only have to come up with spending money and money for meals in Japan, everything else is paid for in full including transfers to and from the airport, an English speaking guide, all the tours, cooking class in Kyoto, I can't wait for this trip honestly.

Restless, this sounds like an amazing trip. I've always wanted to go to Japan, but alas it hasn't come up on the cards yet. It's definitely next on my list of new countries to visit, but I don't think it's on the radar at the moment unfortunately. When do you leave?

Also on my mind is that this is the last night with the Castle to myself, and that's ok because I'm kind of growing tired of the metal lifestyle. It's been good and hey, I'll have a few vinos tonight, but I'm looking forward to regular life beginning again.

I'm doing Feb Fast as well, which I do most years. Not sure if this is a thing outside Australia, but it basically means you go without something all through February, usually alcohol. So I'm doing alcohol and junk food. My body is going to thank me....

But tonight, it's still January....

I'm excited. Within the past week or so, we've bought a second car and found a bigger apartment in a quieter neighborhood. Lots of work to be done, but things might actually be looking up.

Nice one mate!

I will say, nothing quite drives home just how goddamn filthy my son's hands are like scrubbing 3.5 years worth of accumulated grimy handprints off the walls with a bucket full of Magic Erasers so we can get our security deposit back. Kids are gross.

I know, right? Fucking nuts, it really does feel like no more than a few months when I think back on it. But yeah, it'll be exactly three and a half years at the end of January.

Thank you so much. :) Our cat isn't herself, but she's hanging in there. Taking her in for another checkup tomorrow actually. I don't foresee us missing this neighborhood too much, we're really looking forward to the change.

RIP Reed Mullin.

WTF is going on with drummers right now?

I was a bit shocked to see this last night. I met him once - he seemed like a nice down-to-earth person, took the time to make me feel welcome.

Hug your drummer friends before it's too late!

Are you still going to be in the same town?

In other news, my wife is doing much better and should be out of the hospital soon. I miss her.

Hey man, that's awesome news about your wife, I'm happy to hear it. Best wishes to you both. And yeah, thankfully we're just moving across town, my son can even stay in the same school. Trying to allow myself to feel hopeful about it!

Thanks, but the doctor said today that she has to stay another week. Ultimately, I can't fault the doctor for being overcautious, so it's probably a good thing, but I miss her.

FA, congrats on finding a better place in the same town. Great that your kid can stay at the same school.

Seems like theres so much to do, and so little time. I´m happy though.. the gap between work and my passion projects is getting narrower every day. Heres some of the stuff i am working on atm.

-Got a new website for my company nearly finished.

-Composing and recording music for a w.i.p. game project (I´ll get % of sales), it´s an outback snowmobile simulator.
-I´m negotiating of making a game to learn finnish with, aimed to people with 0 skills of it (immigrants and refugees) and Finnish government is supposed to pay for it.

-I have my own game project. Already built one quiz game, but the subject (quotes) didn´t make a fun enough game.. maybe i use the game with a whole new subject and set of questions, but something else next. (A platform for visual interactive short stories with narration, minor voice acting and audio.. think of an audiobook on steroids. First one is a crime story told from the serial killers point of view.)

-My personal music project. (Darkness is calling.. i have one song recorded with half of the vocals done and some with only basic composition done.. want to do an EP but i guess it ain´t ready until next year)

-Portfolio that i need to extend. (I need to get more stuff out there, so doing some game music just for the portfolio)

-Recording samples for a samplepack. (Something i´m doing for myself to use, and also to give away free to get people visit my website)

-Working on some beats to sell or lease. (I quite enjoy working on this sort of track, and theres a world full of rappers without musical talent who need beats to do their thing on.)

Subcontract work (Delivering papers for the local newspaper company few nights a month, making a decent 30ish € per hour to my company, so quite essential both in helping my new business to stay decently funded to make purchases and pay for costs)

-Need to give a yearly VAT report of sales and purchases to gov this month.

What kind of music goes well with a snowmobile simulator?

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!
