Went to see Carcass last night. Openers: Conjurer and Unto Others.

Conjurer were cool, not what I thought they were like. A few blast beats, and a classic windmill headbanging bass player, like Newsted in his prime.

Unto Others... I am still not sure what to make of them. It was like The Cure molested Iron Maiden. Not necessarily the best parts of those bands, but original if nothing else. I think they even won me over by the end...because I am listening to it now to try and comprehend what it was I saw.

Got a place at front barrier for Carcass and had 50% chance I was going to be at the same end as Bill Steer. Damn it all to heck but he was stage left and I had to get blasted by the newbie's 4x12 which drowned out some of Bill's playing. I had forgotten just how awesome that guy is. His playing is so fluid and tasteful. And he looks in great shape.

Jeff's seen better days and needs to lay off the pies, but they all put on a good show. They must have played more than half of the last album, which does work really well live and I recognise enough of to enjoy. Live drum sound is much better than Andy Sneap production on the album.

Can't beat the hits from Necroticism and Heartwork though. Medley tracks from Swansong are surprisingly great too. They even played a few from Symphonies of Sickness and a comedy drum solo to give Jeff a chance to catch his breath. I don't think they played anything from Surgical Steel. Perhaps one song I knew was newish but I couldn't place it. I have the CD lying around somewhere.

Not a bad Thursday night and only a half hour drive from home!

Gloryhammer - Return To The Kingdom Of Fife

Great choice!  Always cool to see a fellow Gloryhammer fan on here!  I was a bit skeptical once Winkler left the band, but the new singer is fantastic.  I'll be playing the new album today quite a bit.  Another great release day.

Nice for you that they played a Thursday Northampton gig so you didn't have to fight your way down into London and see them in Brixton tomorrow night. I remember the days of going to see bands and gambling which side of the stage the guitar player would be on and how disappointed we'd be if we guessed wrong. I'll assume you'd never seen them before but now you'll never make that same mistake with Carcass again. (from your pic it looks like he was stage right not stage left) Still, you didn't appear to be much more than 5 or 6 meters away from the dude on that nice low stage in a small club so it's always cool to finally see your metal heros in an intimate setting like that. Were they bleedin' loud as fuck in that litte place or did they have mercy on your ears?

Read your post the first time as "the Cult molested Maiden" and now I see you actually said the Cure not the Cult, so I'm having to decontruct that mental pic I'd concocted of Astbury and Duffy up onstage with Murray and Harris. As hard as that woud be to imagine I'm really having trouble wrapping my head around the idea of the Cure/Maiden mashup. Almost tempted to dial up Unto Others and see what you mean, but the other half of me thinks I should just put the whole idea right out of my head and move on with my day.

Woke up 90 minutes ago and peeked at the clock with one bleary eye, saw it was just about 6 then jumped up and ran down the stairs to put the garbage out before the truck comes to take it away (usually 6:15 or 6:30) Can't put it out the night before or the bears will get into it and leave it strewn all about (like they did last week when I forgot to put it out for the garbagemen Friday morning and then thought I could leave the can outside by the kitchen door) and the garbage blokes won't fuck with it then. But anyway now I can't get back to sleep and my alarm will be going off in another 15 mintes at 7:45 so once again the bears have robbed me of an hour and 45 minutes of valuable much needed sleep and I'll probably have a shitty day. Wish I was preparing to have a shitty day because I'd gone to see a cool metal show last night and not just because I had to get up and carry the stupid rubbish out to the street.

Dialed up the new Gloryhammer record on YouTube (I've seen their name around but I had never actually heard them before) skipped the intro and clicked on a spot midway through the first song...and I made it a whole 4 seconds! And even after only 4 seconds I feel violated now. Like I need a shot of whiskey and a hot shower while blasting gnarly osdm to get the memory of those 4 seconds out of my head. You know you're my boy Jimmy T and I've always enjoyed our forum interactions, but I don't know how you can listen to that stuff.

I thought I was being clever that stage left was from audience perspective. I won't make that mistake again. Fool me once.

I've been listening to this Unto Others band all day (started with album called Mana). I cannot fathom why I like this. I think it must be a joke and I love joke bands. That is the only explanation that makes sense.

The production is solid and there is random blistering fast footwork in the drums which was something I noticed while watching them last night.

It is worth reiterating that this band opened for Carcass. Like, they actually asked them on purpose. Presumably they didn't book a band with a name that sounded like "Unto Others" by accident. Were they actually after "Reeking Stench Unto the Anus of the Other Dimension?" Y'know, that well known up and coming grind band from Macclesfield? Not a Cure worship hard rock band from Portland.

It was my first time in Northampton. There is nothing to recommend it and the venue was a shithole. But perfectly serviceable actually and there was a parking building across the road. I was lucky to get into the line for the ticket machine quickly after the gig because the line was about a 100 deep a few minutes later. And only one of three machines was working.

However, lucky that I didn't try for the London gig because there are train strikes today and tomorrow. Also, I don't like getting dragged to Brixton.

I also don't like Shepherd's Bush but bloody Paradise Lost has just announced shows with My Dying Bride. MY DYING BRIDE and Paradise Lost playing Icon. Creaming Jesus.

While I can imagine contending with bears is a ball ache, I wouldn't mind having that problem for awhile. I get excited just to see a dirty fox.

I couldn't help myself and I had a listen to their album 'Strength'. Mate, you've got to get yourself some help. This is a very poor joke. It's well played and well produced, but strange and horrible.

For me the enduring draw of cheesy power metal is driven by the idea that so many other people feel the need to vocally dislike it.

Let's see...well played, well produced, strange and horrible. Sounds like a typical arvo for ya Doc.

No I'm not going to check them out to see just how 'orrible it really is, that's what I've got you for.

Gotta admit, I always have trouble figuring out when you're saying something seriously or when you're having us on. I'd have to think you couldn't mean that literally, but what if you did?

So you're a contrarian then and that's how you decide what to listen to? Sounds like a pretty dumb way to make your musical selections. That'd be like saying I keep eating brussel sprouts mainly because so many other people say they dislike them. Why would you care who else said they liked or didn't like something that you're most likely listening to alone by yourself on the farm? You either enjoy listening to something or you don't.

So no, you couldn't be serious. There wouldn't be enough money in the world to get someone to listen to cheesy power metal if they really couldn't stand it. But on the other hand bands like Manowar, Rhapsody, Hammerfall and Dragonforce have supposedly sold a bunch of records and someone's gotta be buying that shit, so I guess anything's possible.

I listen to a bit of power metal, not as much as I used to and these days only from a handful of bands. I've listened to it since before the days when Manowar were hated for their goofy photo shoots and not their music. I love the fact that so many people feel the need to shit on power metal and over the years I have tuned into some bands purely because I heard people talk shit about them. I don't like every power metal band but I do love the way so many people vocally hate power metal.

There's good 'orrible and there's just plain bad horrible. This is the latter. Cheesy is today's word it seems and yep, it's cheesy.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
