What's on your mind?

Well, well, well...... life is strange isn't it? Appears my business is splitting the currently combined SE Asia and ANZ operations into two separate groups and my department will thus be divided into two smaller units one based in Singapore and the other in Melbourne. What this means is my job will disappear this Friday and be replaced by two smaller ones. So for the first time in 16 years I will be looking for work. Bit of a shock to say the least. The Vice President I reported to from a functional perspective is also moving on.

On the 'plus' side of things, I've been going back an forth between Australia and Singapore each month for 3 years now...so more time at home with the family.

Life has a way of smacking you down when you get too comfortable doesn't it?

Wow dude, that sounds like a real blow with the new house and everything you've already got on your plate. Are they giving you a severance package? Got any prospects in mind? Best wishes to you and your family.

Sorry I haven't been around much guys it takes a lot of work to plan a trip like this one to LA. Sorting out accomodation that's affordable, booking tickets for the days of racing, working out the best means of transportation, other activities for the days bro isn't racing, and in amongst all that day-to-day life is still happening.

Can you tell I'm super excited? 'Cause I am. Also genuinely loving life right now.

I got this archaic table top digital recording studio thing Made by Roland in the late 90's that uses a virtually dated drive, zip drive, anyway the drive seems to be dead, and the dream.. well it's not dead,

Ok this stupid post is pointless, it's a box my friend spent $5- on , but I don't have a good way to record, that's all, and I think that trying to record would improve my skills, so let me phrase this as a question. What is an easy way to record some stuff. You know I have a four track that works OK, I just need to set up my drum kit and learn something rudimentary

It is time to get over the apprehension that I'm not skilled enough to get started, I have all the things I need to sketch out some songs or whatever, I'm not looking to make a finished product straight out of the gate, what I need to do is get more broadly in tune with what a song or some-such needs.

And apparently ladies and gentlemen, that is what is on my mind.

That and my youngest daughter has renamed herself with a boys name and wants to go by the gender neutral, albeit plural pronouns they, them, theirs and such, so that is on my mind a little as well. Non-binary gender identification seems to be specifically what is up there. So yeah, also on my mind a bit, and I think it's for real. The kid is turning 14 in just a few days. I'd like to lay thing on the internet, and the endocrine disrupting qualities of the shampoo and the fucking Bovine Growth Hormone in the cheese we eat, but that seems a little facile.

It may be possible to replace the faulty drive - depending on what model the Roland is, you may even be able to convert it to take SD cards, which have no moving parts and are not yet obsolete. It will take a bit of fiddling and probably some wizardry on your part. If you don't want to go that route, I highly recommend an affordable computer-based setup. Focusrite's USB interfaces are a good place to start, and Reaper is a good-sounding, full-featured recording program that won't break the bank. The learning curve may be a bit steep, but it's worth it. Do you have any microphones? Also, knowing your aversion to anything too synthetic, are you willing to try your hand at basic drum programming? It's a great songwriting tool.

As far as your daughter goes, it may very well be for real, and looking for an environmental cause won't be productive. The individuation process is nothing to be trifled with. I know other people who say that they never felt like themselves until they accepted their own non-binary gender identity. I don't think there's anything you can do but respect their choices and see how it plays out - not that I'd imagine you doing anything else. I could certainly understand misgivings about it, though, it's a tough road to walk. Good luck to them, and to you.

Kinda annoyed with djent. Don´t know exactly why. Feels like it´s like the new nu-metal or something. Please love djent if you do, not bothered. Still just seeing the word alone makes my aggro levels grow. Thank god theres music to sink my extra aggrenaline into. :D

I'm not really annoyed by djent so much as.... bands like.... I don't even want to type it, let alone say it out loud to somebody. It just makes me cringe whenever I utter it. Ya know, them fucking screamo and emo bands... ewwwwww. But yeah, like you said, at least I got a whole catalog of thrash to go through, so no worries there :D

I love Meshuggah, and Cloudkicker has some great sort of djenty instrumental metal stuff, but so far I've been unmoved by every other band I've heard that's associated with the term. As far as screamo, it's not my typical sound, but there's good stuff out there nonetheless - some heavy early shit I enjoy that's very close in spirit to grindcore, and some slightly later stuff that pulls from early melodic death metal. There are some newer releases I intend to follow up on as well.

I love Meshuggah too, i did before they were as huge or lot of people even knew about them, but the thing is.. they aren´t djent! I bought contradictions collapse and none digipack in the mid 90s and enjoyed them ever since. My friend recommended it to me, they were a pretty unique band back then.. I guess thats what i will listen to as morning music.. time to fetch the cd... :D

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
