Hey Doc man listen, you're the one who volunteered that you went and saw them perform live, I'm not making this shit up. I'm assuming no one forced you, you were there of your own accord. And please believe me when I tell you, I don't want any part of either end of your pineapple. 😁

Yeah, but I feel I must re-iterate that I went to see Fallujah and walked out on KSE because they sucked as much as I expected.

And, yes, clearly you have hit on a sore point so keep on picking the scab...😉

PSICOSFERA - Summa Negativa. Despite the smart arse band name -  they are just waiting for you to mis-pronounce it so they can condescendingly correct you - I rather enjoyed this.

I think I'd probably rather suffer through KSE's set than subject myself to Fallujah's fluffy prog/tech wankery nonsense. But it's been years and years since I checked out any KSE so there's a chance they could turn out to be even worse than I remember. On the other hand, how could anything be worse than Fallujah? Ad Nauseam or Pyrrhon maybe. Archspire, Artificial Brain, Krallice, Imperial Triumphant, Haken...yeah forget I said that, I guess a lot of shit can be worse than Fallujah.

Feral Howl - Worshipper, bm Norway. Really had no choice but to click on this one when I saw the band name uses our word of the day.

Rare  chime in here, doom/sludge in its many variants is probably my favorite overall genre.  Unfortunately, I found all of the Rob Lowe Candlemass albums had moment of euphoria  but inconsistent C+ disappointing affairs and pretty boring/uninvolving.  From memory, King of the Grey Islands is probably the best of the lot.

And I don't need to listen to know that the vocals suck too.

This is feral in the Strine colloquial sense and not the formal English sense, in as much as it sucks. Thin sound, synths way too high in the mix, perfunctory structure. No redeeming features so far - third track and I'm out.

Tbh I was ready to bail after two songs as well Docarooni, because I only clicked on it when I saw the word Feral. But I stuck with it and it did get much better for me towards the end. I'll have another listen tomorrow see how I feel about it as a potential purchase then. T'was a lot better than any Fallujah wankery though, I can assure you of that.

I get that you don't like Rob Lowe's voice and that's cool man, to each his own. He's not my singer of the year or anything like that, as we both know I rarely listen to metal with clean vocals. But I've always thought he was a good fit for Candlemass and I really enjoyed my Death Magic Doom spin first thing this morning. I guess this is kinda like when I say Rob Halford is a shit singer and everybody goes crazy on me. But what can I do, I really genuinely can't stand the sound of his voice.

Nattfly - Sånger för den kalla modern, (Songs for the Cold Mother) Sweden. Doesn't sound like any Swedish black metal I've ever heard. Too many violins I guess. Not synths, the dude's really going to town on his fiddle in a harsh somewhat atonal manner. Probably should have turned it off but I can't seem to tear myself away from it, I'm actually captivated by this and now there are only 5 minutes left to go so I might as well let 'er finish.

Step to Freedom - Step to Freedom, Novgorod Russia. This has gotta be the best random NYP thing I've picked up all year. It's like the perfect mix of death metal and crust punk with killer riffs galore. Impossible for me to just play this once and move on, I have to go for two or three in a row every time.

Not sure about this one. The decidedly atmospheric approach has an interesting way of highlighting the harmonies in the musicianship, and they definitely have no issues hitting the newer post-whatever style with an amorphous wall of sound the way certain parts of Krallice and their ilk might. There's the issue of them being a newer young band that will certainly garner an eye roll or two from metal veterans of the old guard. For me personally, I don't mind it as long as it doesn't push the 'core' influence too hard. They're at their best when they bring their buildups to a sudden precipice and drop you off the dense soundscape cliff right into the waiting maw of stark and unadorned riffs. Closest comparison I could here would be like a more ornate Artificial Brain (and I actually really like Artificial Brain). Above average I'd say, but it's going to have to work harder than most albums to truly win me over.

Nile - Black Seeds of Vengeance (2000)

Fantastic choice!  I enjoy all of Nile's material, but those early albums especially had a ferocity and creativity about them.  "Annihilation of the Wicked" is my favorite Nile album, but "Black Seeds of Vengeance" and "In Their Darkened Shrines" are up near the top of the list as well!

Annihilation of the Wicked is also my favourite Nile album. The first two tracks are unforgettable: the construction and evolution of the main riff in Dusk falls upon the Temple of the Serpent on the Mount of Sunrise throughout the track, Cast down the Heretic. These two tracks alone at the start of the album are well worth the diversions.

I really like In Their Darkened Shrines too (ahhhhhhh, Wind of Horus!).

I'm less familiar with Black Seeds of Vengeance, but you recognise Nile from the first few seconds of the first track. There's no mistaking it.

I find myself coming back to Black Seeds of Vengeance most....but that might just be because it is loaded on my DAP, and no other Nile albums are.

I always really liked Those Whom the Gods Detest. In Their Darkened Shrines was a favourite for a long time, but I listened to it a while ago and found the production a bit distracting.....however, just found it on bandcamp and the drums aren't too bad. In Their Darkened Shrines | Nile | Relapse Alumni (bandcamp.com)

Nile packs in too many notes in their riffs. Doesn't matter which album, I can't do it, that's not what I'm here for.

I've probably seen Nile play at least a dozen times. They're one of those road warrior bands like Clutch that, for one reason or another, I always find myself in the vicinity of. Not that that's a bad thing. I don't want to unequivocally make out as if my experience with them is wholly representative of what they are though, but just anecdotally, I remember when they were notorious for having a "muddy" live sound that made picking individual songs out from their 'gravel in a blender with a gut-shot badger' approach to playing live pretty rough going on the old ears. I think that was probably primarily the venues they were playing though. Then after Annihilation dropped they must have opted for new gear because their sound suddenly became absolutely pristine in any size venue. Dallas Toller-Wade's drumming was impeccable, and they even made their twin vocal attack worth paying attention to. The atmospheric tracks were eerie, and the guitars were murderously precise (and keep in mind when I see a band whose studio output I'm familiar with I always pay attention to the fingerings and picking on their axes just in case somebody tries to pull some of that live-tracking bullshit). It's definitely been a treat to watch their careers play out. Black Seeds is still probably my favorite, but Annihilation is still an amazing feat to see.

...and can I just say that it's very appropriate that we've moved from Candlemass to Nile in the discussion, since Nile inadvertently took the infamous riff from Cmass' Well of Souls on one of the tracks from In Their Darkened Shrines. I've actually asked them about that particular riff and they were pretty good sports about it, and said before people started pointing that riff out to them they'd never really heard Candlemass.

Another album another skippable overlong keyboard intro track. Death/Thrash that leans away from the sometimes frustrating "pizza party thrash/crossover" template a lot of the young'ns have been adopting since Municipal Waste. It sits comfortably in the more arch minor-key and euro influenced style of things without losing sight of it's thrash roots.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
