I am not white

https://total-croatia-news.com/lifestyle/99-3-croatia-the-most-racially-pure-caucasian-country-in-the-world/#:~:text=But Croatia%2C and its football, but they are very rare.

I'm paraphrasing here: "Croatia is essentially white. There are some coloured Croatians – through granted passports and mixed births – but they are very rare. Even rarer than foreigners living full-time in this beautiful country. According to the Ministry of the Interior website the number of foreigners with permits living in Croatia in 2016 – including Bosnians, Slovenians etc, but not those with dual citizenship – was under 30,000. 30,000 from a population of 4.2 million. 0.7% of the population was not Croatian. Croatia is 99.3 pure Croat. Croatia is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic – 90% is usually the number bandied about. So here, in the heart of Europe, in a region renowned for its warfare and cultural melting pot, you have probably the most homogenous and racially pure Caucasian country in the world, both in terms of colour and religion."

In America you'd be white. European and white are basically synonymous here. Except for the worst bigots, no one really breaks people of European descent down into their various shades. Not for the last 50 years or so anyway. We can see that people come in different shades of white, Italians, Greeks, Albanians, Turks, Spaniards... they're all just white. People talk about "olive-skinned" people from southern Europe but we still consider them to be under the white umbrella. My first wife (born in Greece) and daughter (who's only half Greek obviously) with their dark hair and perma-tans are considered white folks. "Wogs" don't really exist over here, I had to look that word up the first time you used it because I'd never heard it before.

I guess maybe down under with your large Anglo-UK descended cohort they exclude all the non Anglos as just not white enough? Unless your skin is pale and translucent you can't be white? Who do they think they are, masters of the Aryan race or something?

My facial features aren't Slavic.  I look more Kazakh as does my whole family on my father's side.  My skin is also darker than Slavs and similar to Kazakhs and other Turkic people.  My mum looks Turkish and has extremely dark skin even by Turkish standards.

Last time I checked Asiatic/Turkish features and olive/brown skin don't make one white.

It could well be there's gypsy (Indian) or some other ethnicity in my blood lines.  I have met other people from my part of the world (Bosnians and Croats) whose skin and facial features were even darker and facial features almost Indian.

Back to my teacher friend, he is now making statements that the whole pronoun thing is part of a conspiracy to turn western societies into socialist dictatorships.

Haha that must be the most inefficient and confusing revolutionary conspiracy ever. How would that even work? By using more than two pronounce you will have the violent urge to install a socialist dictator in your country?

I am wearing a posture corrector for 20 mins each day.  Always had terrible posture and sitting down most of the day to drive or be at my desk does not help.  Means standing with correct posture after 40 odd years of not doing so is actually quite a challenge, even for 20 mins a day.

Wow I don't envy you.  I don't think I could handle that given I am a 6 foot tall office rat with an aversion to exercise.

I could look it up but prefer to think of a "posture corrector" as some kind of electrode system that shocks your balls when you stray from perfectly upright.

After 3 years sitting on a rickety Ikea dining room chair in front of a computer every day I shudder to think what condition my posture is in. It shouldn't be too bad but I definitely slouch. I tend to sit barefoot and cross legged like a child being read a story at nursery before afternoon nap.

Noticed this past week that YouTube now has a pop-up whenever I click on a video that tells me "Ad-blockers are not allowed on YouTube".  It proceeds to then tell me how adverts help "millions" of users find and use YouTube but that if I really want to get rid of adverts I can pay for a monthly "premium" subscription.

First of all YouTube, go fuck yourself.

Secondly, offering a paid subscription when in your previous statement you talk about accessibility to "millions" as being a prime goal of your adverts seems more than a little ironic.

Thirdly, go fuck yourself YouTube.

Yeah it's an ongoing game...the other issue is that sometimes the blocker company will cut some kind of deal. The ad blocker I've used on my phone for the longest time has slowly, but steadily made some concessions to places like YouTube and Google over the years. Biggest one was when they took away the ability to listen to YouTube while your phone was in sleep mode because YouTube doesn't like that. Not sure if it was a payoff or legal threats that did it, but they shut it down quick

My home computer I use AdBlocker Ultimate and uBlock Origin. They're both pretty good by themselves, but they seem to get along well with each other, and usually one will catch something if the other doesn't. Plus, while uBlock Origin seems to be more thorough, which I like, it gets pinged more often by sites that don't like ad blockers. AdBlocker Ultimate on the other hand seems to work on at least some of the sites that would otherwise lock up from an ad blocker, so i pretty much never have to deal with ads on anything.

For my phone I use Free Adblocker Browser, which was fantastic when it first started, and while It still does the job for the most part, they've made small concessions over the years like "Okay one ad when you first load it and no more after that" or when they had their stupid CHAT AI search bar taking up a huge chunk of the screen. They do seem to take feedback seriously though, and they'll fix things pretty quickly if there's an issue, so I've stuck with them.

At my work indigenous Australians have been allowed to cancel meetings, appointments and take urgent leave because Australia voted against a referendum to create an indigenous advisory committee in our constitution.

Nothing like medical staff of certain races taking time off because of democracy.

World's gone fucking mad!

I just love having no power, and it’s even better on a 32 Celsius day… at least it isn’t 40° so that’s something

Open windows?

I have 2 heat pumps that have air cooling but we seldom use them.  Usually we open the windows and create drafts as well as close blinds/curtains that face the sun.

What we should do is shut down more power stations so that it's harder to meet the base load requirements of the national grid over summer.

I think that is the exact government policy!

There really is no point looking to the future, if we just shut down all the coal plants now eventually green power will catch up. 😮

The stupid thing now is that because of the last round of prices increases solar installs are at an all time high in Victoria so there is an abundance of dirty power going back into the grid and we now have excess power to our needs. It should be pumped into the grid but because of state deals and limits it wont be. Also the massive price increases that were deemed necessary only 3 months ago are no longer warranted but because the government has authorised them they wont back down on them. By the time the next government cap is put on power companies we'll have more excuses to increase prices despite solar installs going up even more.

Basically whole electricity market in Australia is borked!

Here in Tasmania we run hydroelectric but cause we are in National Electric Market (which ACT and WA are not), we are paying massive increases due to mainland providers gas and coal costs going through the roof even though cost of hydroelectric generation is stable (no drought).

The NEM needs to be overhauled and the states need to be removed out of the equation.

Government also needs to smash the gas and coal cartel.  Given how much gas this country produces, the stuff should be near free.

But it's nearly all exported and to make matters worse the gas companies pay virtually no royalties and very little or no tax.

So Australia is not benefiting from its massive natural resource reserves at all.

The one I really like is the power companies that offer "green" power for an extra expense. The promise that as a consumer if you pay an extra $5 per month (or more in some cases) they'll guarantee that your power comes from green power sources.

Anyone who falls for that scam is beyond stupid.

Haven't seen that one (we get no choice in power provider in Tassie - it's all government owned but for profit (Aurora).

Greenwashing is the latest marketing craze!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
