I liked the live record they did for the Turbo tour, but that doesn't really count. A couple tracks here and there after that (Painkiller, Judas Rising, Firepower) although I can't say I've been interested in purchasing anything from Blaze - present or even streaming them more than maybe once.

I hadn't heard anyone say "Ripper is one of my favorite metal vocalists in existence" before. I like the guy, but he's a bit one dimensional in his delivery. However, he is in great shape at the moment. I presume he stopped drinking that Monster Energy drink shit.

Priest is the Ritchie show now. His solos and writing style are so prevalent on the last two records that there is not much left of the original DNA. And most here would say Priest haven't done anything great since 1984. As infuriating as that sounds, it is probably accurate.

Of the latter day Maiden albums I always liked A Matter of Life and Death, although I did enjoy Senjitsu today.

Don't think I could see my way to calling Defenders "great" Jon. Half of it's killer and the other half is filler. Honestly it could have been an EP with tracks 1, 2 & 4 that's all I'd really need. Maybe throw on Heavy Duty and the title track as an outro to flesh it out to (nearly) 18 minutes. So for me that averages out to just pretty good, because objectively speaking side 2 mostly blows and the cheese factor of RHRF can be too much to bear. 5 out of 10 good tracks to duff, is not a ratio that screams greatness. Or vengeance for that matter.

The only Priest platter I could listen to all the way through and throw superlatives like "great" at might be Vengeance. But they never did another one like that again. I did think Angel of Retribution in '05 was not too bad either, that's the first and last one I ever bought post-Defenders. Firepower wasn't shitty as much as it was just superfluous, added nothing new just a vague evocation of their distant golden hey-day in decades long past. Looking over their discography I'm finding it hard to believe that in just 4 short months Defenders will be 40 years old. Me thinks we might be getting old Jon-0 Blade.

In honor of the Autumnal Equinox this morning I'm having a mini Finnblack marathon. And it's making me wonder whatever happened to my Scrobblin' buddy the Finnish cum blaster? Been a minute since he came and told us how many times he listened to Blood Chalice each day. Guess we weren't trve or kvlt enough for him.

Behexen - My Soul for His Glory, 2008.

Horna - Askel Lähempänä Saatanaa, 2013

Azaghal - Codex Antitheus, 2005

Interesting take!  I wouldn't begrudge anyone of his or her musical opinion or taste - that's for sure!

Personally, I think the modern Judas Priest output is every bit as good as some of the classics.  In fact, I have both "Redeemer of Souls" and "Firepower" in my top 5 JP albums in the catalog.  "Firepower" ranks #2, only behind "Painkiller" for me.  "Angel of Retribution" is in my top 10 as well.  "Nostradamus" has some strong tracks, too.

The classics are undeniable, though!

U.D.O. - "Touchdown"

Iron Maiden - "Dance of Death"

KK's Priest - "Sermons of the Sinner"

Metal Church - "Congregation of Annihilation"

HammerFall - "Glory to the Brave"

HammerFall - "Legacy of Kings"

Loving the traditional metal route these last couple of days!

Judas Priest - Firepower 2018. Guess I'll need to revisit this one if my friend James Thomas rates it so highly. It's not that I think it's so terrible or anything, it's just so damned generic and homogenized. This album sounds to me like if you played all the old Judas Priest albums for your pet AI and then told it to come up with its own AI version of what it thinks a modern 80's Priest tribute album should sound like. Whatever was cool about metal gods Judas Priest 40 years ago way back in 1982, this ain't representative of that. This sounds more like AI generated heavy metal inspired elevator music. Not unlike what KK's album sounded like. All songs no doubt generated from the same AI bot.

I've missed our conversations lately, Mr. GG!  I can't really explain it, but "Firepower" just grabbed me from start to finish.  Faulkner is a fantastic guitarist in his own right, and I think his work really shines on this album.  Halford sounds as good as ever, and the songs have some great variety.  It's got some of the faster stuff, some mid-paced stuff, some nice groove, and some facemelters.  There's not a single track that I skip, and I've listened to it all the way through numerous times (too many to count at this point).  But we all know my affinity for the modern output from classic bands, so I guess this isn't much of a surprise! The triple-headed monster that opens the album ("Firepower", "Lightning Strike", and "Evil Never Dies") sets the tone for a thoroughly enjoyable heavy metal ride.

What's your listening experience been like lately?  Put on any thrash, by any chance?

Thrash? Yeah I work in a little here and there. But you know me, it's the blackened kind. Was digging on this one the other day, played it multiple times in a row. But I don't know man, you might not consider this thrash. One of the Youtube comments calls it thrash/heavy/black & roll. Definitely got some groove to it though whatever it is.

I, Destroyer - Cold, Dead Hands, Rhode Island

Oh my goodness!  This I, Destroyer EP is fantastic!  I'll be listening through this one multiple times, myself, over the coming week.  My wife and I are heading down to the coast for vacation all week (leaving today), so I'll have plenty of time to play this album while relaxing in front of the waves.  The recommendation is much appreciated!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
