Don't think I've ever heard Taylor Swift's music. Is it really bad? I'm sure if my wife were still alive she'd be forcing it on me in the car too. When she learned that I couldn't stand Rush she used to crank their songs up louder every time one would come on in her car just to annoy me. Isn't marriage wonderful?

I haven't listened to any of this stuff before. It's a few cuts above the vapid dancey bubblegum bullshit I hear at the grocery store. So, no, not bad as these things go. Not how I would choose to spend a morning but it doesn't offend my delicate sensibilities.

I love Rush, but I understand that other people don't, so I only inflict them on traveling or living companions when necessary. Maybe we'll listen to some Rush later to compensate for the Taytay marathon.

I can tolerate some Rush, but those Limelight/Tom Sawyer/New World Man/Freewill/Spirit of Radio early 80's era "hits" have been overplayed to the point where I will rush to turn it off. Give me some of their earlier songs like Finding My Way or Bastille Day or some of the lesser played hits like Red Barchetta or that Trees song and I can enjoy them a little bit even though Geddy's voice kills me. I've never even heard any of the late 80's or later stuff.

My front lawn has big ruts in it from the last time my contractor parked his truck there on a drizzly 40° day in December. He spun his dualies in the mud trying to get up over the little incline. You'd think he would've just parked in the driveway when he saw he couldn't make it up the first time, but no, he pulled back out into the street and took another run at it at it. Then the huge muddy ruts froze like that. One day this spring I'll have to work on them with a rake, throw some grass seed down. But it seems like lately every time it gets above freezing it's raining out.

I fucking hate that. The number of fucking idiot delivery men I've had out here on the farm over the years who get told turn their vehicles in a particular spot but think they know better is stupid. I've had everything from vans to semi trailers, from small ruts to full on stuck vehicles and drivers begging me to pull them out with the tractor. If it wasn't an inconvenience to me to leave the idiots when they get stuck I'd do it, but I don't need them hanging around any longer than they have too.

Caress of Steel is where it's at. Was just jamming The Necromancer earlier today. F'ing love that song. Love the dirty/gritty guitar tone on that album (no it's not Goat Mafia dirty, but definitely considerably moreso than any other Rush album).

Aside from the radio hits, I never understand the hate for early Rush. It's prog. I guess if you just hate prog, then no way you'll like it, but it's miles ahead of the other celebrated genre stallwarts like Yes (rather have herpes than listen to Jon Anderson) and Genesis, slightly less weird/more listenable than King Crimson, and more consistent than Uriah Heep. 80's stuff, totally get it even if I don't agree. The sound wasn't for everyone (keyboard forward) even if the songwriting was excellent as was the musicianship. Post 90 stuff was a bit hit or miss. Most albums had 3-4 really strong songs and a good bit of filler. I like all of it, but I do get why some fans of the older stuff didn't stick around after the shift in their sound around 84.

Later Rush probably still wouldn't do it for you, but Geddy's voice did mellow with time. Their last album (Clockwork Angels) is probably the best thing they did post-1990. Hell maybe even post-84. Worth a listen. Maybe my 3 favorite songs off the album. I guarantee you'll enjoy this more than anything by Tay-Tay.

Do they not play music in Aussie grocery stores or other general retail outlets? There's no escaping the general Top-40 bullshit here in the States unless you live in a bunker and avoid all public spaces. Granted, I'd have no idea who sings any of these songs if it weren't for the women in my life, but regardless it's piped in everywhere.

I had managed to avoid most of it until today. I had to listen to a second album on the way back home. I now feel as though my brain has been scraped out of my ears. I didn't hate most of it but it's a bit much in aggregate. It turns out my wife is a massive Swiftie.

Don't think I've heard that one. I have Рдяндалир (Rdyandalir), To Kampf, and a few others I've never been able to translate. I've been looking for Khladavzor, Night Wolf, and Winterkald but there all as rare as hen's teeth.

Hellir - wheel ghosts

I can try to translate, since Russian is my native language

They do, and contrary to scurrilous assertions by the bent cucumber, I am exposed to whatever they serve up when I go shopping. Mainly oldies it seems. My wife might be able to pick a Taylor Swift song, but she is a good woman and wouldn't point it out to me. I will be going to the movies later today with her and the daughter - in the daughter's car and she certainly knows all about TS so I may be exposed.

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted.

I don't ever hear any of this modern top 40 nonsense anywhere since my wife died in '17. Supermarket I go to seems to have like the muzak versions of old 60's pop songs playing. Nothing from this century, just old shit I vaguely remember hearing from my youth way back before all you Gen-X'ers were even born. I can't think of anywhere else I frequent that has music piped in, but then I'm one of those people who often gets lost in his own thoughts when I'm out in public. I suppose there could be music playing in the background some places, but I probably wouldn't even notice. Do most of my shopping online anyway. When I need something I just whip my phone out and it's here the next day usually.

I was very disappointed with this new one after really loving the demo and the first full length.

I realize that these guys being traditional heavy metal where references to things like rainbows without even registering how silly that sounds is pretty par for the course, but it's worth considering that Rainbow had RJD as a vocalist and anything with Dio on vocals you can call whatever you want without calling your metalness in to question. This guy is emphatically not Dio. He's capable, but maybe a little overambitious. In fact he sounds like he'd be a better fit for a Testament style thrash band with some occasional falsetto shrieks for fun.

That said, what we've got here is no more and no less than what you'd expect. Traditional heavy metal in the Cruz Del Sur style. It's all about your threshold for this sorta thing.

Love this album!  Great choice.

Blasphemous Goat Vomit - Necromantic Invocation (2024) {USA}
hmm well they capture the evil black metal vibe, but for me, at least there’s just something missing Astral Lore - Astral Lore (2024) {France/Portugal}

atmospheric black metal, I find it meanders a little too long in some places, but overall not bad

My wife won't touch pop music with a barge pole. She was brought up listening to baroque (her family thought Mozart was too modern and a sell out). on the one hand and Pat Metheny elevator music jazz on the other. With a side helping of Genesis.

She actively hates my favourite vocalists: Halford, Mercury, Steele and Scott (with especial loathing of Dickinson, although I agree he's overrated anyhow); but tolerates the grunting and shrieking stuff with only minor dissatisfaction just because it's not even pretending to be singing in the first place.

My kind of woman. Except I like Pete.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

      Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

      There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

      Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

      The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

      There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
