You just have to find the right kids tv shows and they are as enjoyable as any adults TV shows. In Australia we've had a number of greats dating back to the 80's with Shirl's Neighbourhood (with the lead signer of Skyhooks as host). In the 90's we had the Ferals with Ratus P Ratus and his fart machine. In the 00's sometime there was a British show call In The Night Garden which had a farting flying machine and a little dude that walked around polishing is his stones. Then in 10's we got Bluey who has taken over the world now they've sold to Disney. Then of course there is the Teletubbies, shit there is not a better show in the world to watch stoned with mates. You just have to be able to get in the right mindset to watch kids shows and you can have more fun than the kids!

I don't think my two are going to have kids of their own, at least not for a while, but fuck I hope they do so I can sit down and watch tv with them when they are really young!

See, I don't think I could get into that. Back when I was carrying the stoner torch my go to for films/TV shows was usually something from the golden age of premium channel original material. So, think The Sopranos, Deadwood, Carnivale, or for comedy Mr. Show, Arrested Development (first three seasons), and The Venture Brothers. The whole children's programming thing was probably less the result of the programs and more to do with the inane and constant advertising on those channels. I still cannot stomach commercials of any variety. If I want to watch something I buy it on hard copy. The ads have to be the worst part of watching tv aimed at anybody, but my god I swear children's advertising is the worst of the worst.

None - None, 3 tracks, 30 minutes of atmo-depressive bm from Portland Oregon, 2017. I've come to realize that I do like this sub-genre known as depressive black metal. Not all the time, but on a lazy chilly 39° (4°C) Saturday afternoon on a holiday weekend something slow and mellow like this can do the trick. Doc will probably come around like he did with Anti and tell me there's nothing to this, it's not musically ambitious enough to suit his pretentious palate. But I don't listen to music for the technicality of the musicianship, or complex arrangements, I just go by how it makes me feel and the mood it creates. It's almost over, I'll probably go with something a little more upbeat after this though, don't think I could do all 4 None albums back to back.

Empire of the Moon - Εκλειψις (Eclipse) Greece 2020

Old - Dawn of Darkness, punky black metal from Germany, this one's worked its way into my top 10 for the year. Don't have it yet because I'm not paying $20 for a CD I don't even want from Germany or Discogs. If I have to buy the physical cd I'll wait til I can find it on a US distro and save the $6.50 shipping. I'm used to paying $6.66 for a digital album, I'm not gonna pay triple for the privilege of getting it on a plastic disc I don't even want.

Our main Kids channel doesn't have ads and most of the shows only go for about 8 minutes so it fits my attention span.

DSBM is really hit or miss with me, I either dig the absolute hell out of it see Bethlehem, Leviathan, or it does absolutely nothing for me see later Shining. Nun are a band, I’ve heard a little bit about, but never actually listen to. Maybe I should do something about that…

Just my own opinion, but that's probably the one style of black metal I've got no love for...I'm sure there are bands out there I'd enjoy but it's just not worth my time to search them out when I can listen to something else.

I don't hate this...

But - of course there is a but - I am on the first track and there is a ditty recorder ostinato melody to annoy me. OK It's gone now and there is a nice slow tempo fuzz going on.

I don't hate this.

Upper octave breathines, eh? No range, no diaphragm, lost you say? Remind me to not be around that day when you dissect my singing voice. As you might've imagined it's not very good. Rob makes me sound ike an amateur. I bet even our own JT could sing rings around me. I know he likes to belt 'em out in the car on the way to and from work, it's probably the only time he gets to be alone.

Windhand - Eternal Return, 2018 Richmond VA. Alright now Cabbage, Rob Lowe is one thing, and you can say whatever you want about me. But don't go disrespecting my girl Dorthia here's voice or we'll have to fight. Allow me the fantasy that I enjoy it and it fits the music perfectly without analyzing her diaphragm or her pipes. I love this album, so let's keep it that way. The aural equivalent of Saturday morning comfort food, like a chorizo & egg burrito from the Quick Check. It may not be techically impressive, but sometimes that little burrito hits the spot and it's all you want.

You got it right, Mr. GG!  Guilty as charged!  I try and belt out the notes with Ralf Scheepers when I'm blasting Primal Fear in the car on the way to work - which I do quite often - or with Joacim Cans when I have HammerFall blaring (which again, I do often).  I think the pipes are getting better!

Yeah I do have to admit it isn’t a style I actively seek out, more something I will give a listen if it’s recommended by another user whose taste is at least somewhat similar to mine, like our Goat hoofed fiend for example.

Not as chaotic as say Angelcorpse, but decent. Might lean a little too far into the thrash side for some. I'm enjoying it even if the recording could use a fresh coat of filth.

Alright, but is that good or bad?

Yer feral cat kills helpless native mammals. Yer feral horse destroys the alpine ecology. Yer feral mynah bird displaces native birds and is noisy and ugly to boot.

Feral most definitely means bad/undesirable/ugly/useless and any other disparaging word you might choose.

I sometime forget we have many non-native Strine speakers here.

Feral as it's used in it's literal sense simply means an undomesticated animal born and grown in and among animal conditions. As it's applied to members of human society it has a negative connotation of being unhinged and animalistic in their appetites. There's also such a thing as feral children who've usually been left for dead in infancy and adopted by some type of pack animal. These children can be taken back into society, but as a general rule there seems to be a hugely pivotal point in human development in which the groundwork for forming sentences and language needs to be established or the child will never gain that capacity in full. I think there was a movie staring Jodie Foster where she played one of these. Interesting stuff in any case.

NP: Betiraun - Subversion

Spanish band with some really good energy going for them. Looks like they put out two albums last year and one this year. The production is kind of all over the place which makes me think this was recorded on separate days and in separate places. Can't really lay that on the band though. I enjoy it.

Oh, and the singing on CANDLEMASS - Psalms to the Dead is simply bad/undesirable/ugly/useless. It needs no further analysis.

If you shit on Candlemass and I suppose Solitude Aeturnus as well whilst listening to Midnight Oil, Fen, KSE and Krallice it's hard to take your old ass seriously. And if you're not careful mate you're gonna hurt your buddy JT's feelings. What did he ever do to you?

NP: Candlemass - Death Magic Doom, Sweden 2009. This for me is the definitive CandleLowe edition, and not a bad way to start a Sunday morning when I'm inexpicably up since 6am for no apparent reason. Rob's channeling the RJD-BDE on this one. Not a bad track on here. I believe Leif Edling took over the role of top traditional metal/doom metal riffmeister when Iommi got old and started running out of riffs.

Demonic - The Empire of Agony, Norwegian black metal with a full color cover.

Stupid spoiled cat won't let me sleep. He probably woke me up at least eight times last night through today. Ugh. Guess I'll just stay up and wait for football to start.

Cool. Album knows exactly what it is and exactly what it wants to be. Nice use of acoustic instruments that don't go too far into folk territory.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
