I used to be proud to be British

DISCLAIMER - MacabreEternal cannot be held responsible if this (intended to be) short post goes on and on and fucking on.

This is a good point, this is one thing that the Brexit campaign denies you now.  You can't be proud to be British and welcome other cultures, nationalities and ethnicities if they come to the (divided) United Kingdom.  Johnson and Farage and all the other mini Mein Fuhrers in the Brexit camp are essentially dictating how you can feel as a proud denizen of your country of birth.  I work alongside some EU migrants who are some of the smartest, most intelligent people I have met, however their overarching  appeal to me is the way they have embraced our culture and yet never lost any of their own identity as Spanish, Portuguese or Greek nationals.  They have enriched our culture by sharing theirs.

I could go on forever about the EU and why essentially leaving achieves nothing more than seeing off one rich psychopathic prick of Prime Minister and replacing him with another even richer, more psychopathic, bigger prick.  Replacing David Cameron with Boris Johnson/Nigel Farage is like wiping shit off your shoe and wiping it on your face!  The economic impact was obvious and inevitable and for me just underlined the glass ceiling we had on the supposed "recovery" of the economy.

If I can take one positive from this campaign is that it has actually mobilised people to do so something!  The downside is they have done for all the wrong reasons of course.  However this is the same energy that needs to be captured and channelled towards the real route of the country's problems.  If we can hone that energy and concentrate it on fighting austerity, pushing back on the privatisation of public services and the complete lack of meaningful activity in terms of social housing (firstly building, secondly allocating) then there's a chance for us outside of the EU.  It has taken less than 24 hours for the Brexit campaign to openly admit that the £350 million pounds a week back into the NHS was a lie and that the free movement of labour was not entirely to do with the EU, give it a month and I can see the tide turning against them even further.

I went and saw Sleep with Windhand last night and had such a great time. The venue is fully top notch 1800 people at capacity, which I think is a great size for a show, and its a beautiful old theater. I'm sporting a new Windhand t-shirt now. My only regret was spending time waiting for people to show up instead of checking out the new Tiki bar I wanted to go to, but you can't have everything. Just for the record I do not drink PBRs standing around in your kitchen, I drink fancy rum drinks in stylish Polynesian themed restaurants. Wow, this post is starting to derail a bit. I got to see the heaviest music I know of, thrash around in the pit, and hang out with friends.

That's great Deathstorm.

*sigh* today was very much a down day. One of the worst I've had in a while actually. Pretty much spent the day curled up in bed with the lights off doing nothing. Truth be told I'm not doing so well these days. I'm not really letting on just how bad I'm feeling most of the time. Today though it was pretty obvious and my brother is pretty worried. Tomorrow I am actually going to seek help because talking about this and sticking to the same old coping mechanisms just isn't working.

We're winding things up here, got about a month left in NYC before we move up to Massachusetts. My wife has finally put in notice at all of her jobs, and we're going up in a couple of weeks to sign the paperwork for our apartment. We were initially hoping to move closer to Boston, but that's out of our budget, so we'll be moving to a town called Lowell. We had fun this weekend, spent today hitting the rides at Coney Island. I haven't been on rollercoasters in years. These were short and mostly tame, but the Thunderbolt had moments of brutality. Almost lost my bandana.

Sadly, these days it's just a bunch of fat people with smartphones, working on their tans. Have you ever been? I hadn't been there since college, the place is a good bit different even from how I remember it.

Looks like I will once again not get to attend MDF, and now I have extra reason to be sad about that, since Akercocke just confirmed an exclusive US appearance. Blargh!

Best of luck Macabre. Oh and also happy birthday.

Speaking of birthdays I finally got another present (only a month late, no big deal). A set of headphones that basically let me listen to my tunes without losing background noise (so I can use them all the time yay) and don't sit in the ear so no possibility of hearing loss. They're called Aftershocks and added bonus totally wireless all you need is a bluetooth connection.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
