Stop advertising my services on the open board you douche bag!  I told you, inviting people round for drinks and introducing them to the concept of cerebral displacement is a pricey gig.

My apologies, I always forget the maxim - never tell the transplant, only tell the host. It's worth pointing out that nobody knew for sure whether it was you until you outed yourself. Ah well, I suppose it's on to greener pastures for both of us now...

I hope some of my friends here have gotten to see the lunar eclipse tonight. It was fucking gorgeous. Probably still is, but I'm off to bed.

Probably was. There was loads of cloud cover and in any case light pollution's up the ass in DC. I just got to see a pretty pedestrian moon.

It really was beautiful. Sucks that it was cloudy for you. I saw it begin to be occluded, and then as the shadow moved further across, an orange glow developed around the edges, becoming more pronounced as the crescent of light got slimmer. The photo I posted in the pics thread was exactly what it looked like through my binoculars before I went to bed.

So I started my internship last week (FINALLY!!), and it is 0% what I was expecting.  The one I had last year was terrible, chaotic, busy as fuck, just downright insane.  This place however, is very relaxed, almost so much to the point of complete and utter boredom. The clients do not have severe mental illnesses like last year, just depression and anxiety folks (also a few borderlines?). I am liking it thus far, but kind of wish I got to experience more than just observing DBT groups.  Oh well.

Well at least you're enjoying it. Do they know how batshit crazy you are yet? :D

For a guy trying to cut down his forum time I sure am active aren't I? Looks like I'm failing to make any headway in that respect. Of course that stems largely from an inability to train and no need to study. I dare say when things return to normal you'll never hear from me again.

The more you keep flogging this, the less seriously I'll take it. You know you love it here, and everyone else is balancing their own lives and priorities while posting however frequently. If you need some time, take it.

Out of curiosity, what prompted your desire to cut back on social media?

Mostly it's because I've spent a lot more time on here this year then I have previously and without really realising it have gradually slacked off on all the things I normally take care of without even thinking. Kind of got a rude awakening of sorts Sunday when the state of my living space was pointed out to me. To say it was disgusting is an understatement hence I spent all of Sunday cleaning. When I say all I mean I started at 6:30am and minus about an hour and a half for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and walking the dog I was cleaning until 8pm. Basically my desire to cut back stems from a need to get my life back in order. I may actually have become addicted to forums/social media given my obssessive need to check what's going on across all sites constantly even if I know it is extremely unlikely any activity will have occurred.

Facebook has proven easy to drop, although I checked it regularly I rarely had much to say myself so I've managed to cut right back and have only checked it once since Sunday morning when I posted my intention to leave facebook. My other forum rarely had much going on so similarly easy to drop. This place however seems to be much harder to ignore.

The last couple of days have been great.

Last week I was able to find time to do the things I used to enjoy most, such as playing chess, visiting my old team's handball match, reading, etc. In the process I bumped into a lot of people I hadn't seen for a long time and although some of the conversations were a bit stiff, I can't deny it did feel good to catch up with old friends:
The kid who taught me how to play chess conquered the 10th place on the Belgian championship this year. He's extremely talented and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him. Who knows where we will see him in a few years...
My former handball team won with 26-21. The game itself was bloody awful to behold, but at least we won. I hadn't seen a game since I quit about 2 years ago because I simply couldn't be bothered really, but I'm glad I went when I look at it now.

A local instrument repairer has also decided to accept me as his apprentice. This means I now have the unique opportunity to learn how to repair woodwinds (especially saxophones). December will bring my first evaluation, so let's hope for the best.

This weekend the biggest flea market in Flanders returns to my city as well. It's an annual event I try to visit each year. I'm looking forward to it as always. The only bummer this year is the fact that I moved. I now live right in front of the tent which will be host to a dozen of Dutch schlager artists who shall relentlessly shout their jolly songs until the hand hits the early hours...

Well at least one of us got the all clear. MRI of my head post-crash last year revealed an abnormal vein in my brain that will, at some point, rupture causing seizures and death. Inoperable as surgery will likely rupture the vein so I just gotta live with the idea that death may claim me at any time. Did I mention that on here yet? I think I did.

I know right. Saw the top neurosurgeon in Australia (conveniently she worked at the same hospital I had the two surgeries to reconstruct my face) to find that out. It was a CT scan first and then the MRI to get a better look then off to the neurosurgeon. She also said there's no way to tell if that was a result of the crash or had been there my entire life. Either way it's a bit like the whole eyesight deal when it's time it's time you know.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
