What's on your mind?

If one has spent weeks analysing with a fine toothed comb each word of every sentence for grammatical and spelling errors I can understand slackening their approach in their personal time. My own writing has suffered tremendously from the lack of academic writing in my life and I envision quite the struggle to rectify the situation early next year. That is, however, unique to myself and I doubt most find this an issue.

So Mindy you opt to refrain from using proper English on our forum simply because you are required to do so as part of your degree? Secondary query: If you are doing so as a means of rebellion would it not make morese sense to reverse the behaviour? Of course I am not in a position to critique spelling and grammar prone as I am to making boneheaded mistakes. I do, at least, have an extremely flimsy excuse to fall back on whereas you are merely being rebellious at best and slothful at worst. Oh also typing this gave me a thinking too much headache so I is gonna jump up and down like a psycho circus clown 'til it goes away.

I use "proper" English when speaking in person.  I do not feel the need to write or type on any social media 100% always on point as I would if I were writing a damn dissertation, damn you guys need to get off my ass for real.

I would have thought the attempt to sound serious would be an indicator to the contrary. I must apologise for this confusion. For future reference though when it is clear people are fishing for a reaction would it not be best to laugh in their face as opposed to biting off their heads?

If it has to do with school, paper writing, and my sucking at both, no....never funny.  Yes, I will bite head off:-P

I don't get that. It's like if I said I went to college for painting, and I work really hard on illustrations, so in my free time I only want to make shitty drawings. It isn't extra work for me to use decent grammar and punctuation. I'm not saying you shouldn't stick with your idiosyncrasies, but the argument that it's somehow harder and less fun to write "well" doesn't make sense to me. And lazy writing often makes for harder reading.

Aww, how nice! You're all being anal-retentive for me.

I am not Iceni =P

Oh and in other news the Dean ML will apparently not take E standard tuning if using 12-56 gauge strings. Not enough action on the tremolo (according to guitar tech) even increasing the number of springs from 2 to 5. I found this odd as I had been told in the past this would not be an issue. So my solution to the problem? ML will be set up in drop A tuning. I'll also get the Razorback done soon and set up in either drop B (BF#BEG#C#) or C (CFBsharpEsharpGC).

Meanwhile in the Great Southern Wasteland the Bureau of Meteorology can't accurately gauge just how hot it will get over the weekend. All they can say is 35+ degrees celsius over the next 4 days. Those kinds of temperatures in early October normally mean we're in for a savage summer.

I've never been to Europe. I do like the atmosphere, just wish I could either really relax or offer something more in the way of activity for an energetic young man. We're doing laundry today, so there's some excitement...

Maybe this will lighten the mood.

He loved it, thanks! What an expressive chin that dude has.

Edit - as this is my 9,999th post, I'll have to consider carefully what to post next... can't have that be just any old post, you know. Leaving "Grandmaster" status, leaving four digits behind. It's a big move. We see how having such a high post count has treated Iceni and BAN, and obviously it's nearly ruined poor RO, who is no doubt wishing that he had in fact been sucked into the alternate universe that we all assumed he would go to upon his 10,000th post. Indeed, this is a moment for sober reflection, for taking stock, for...

Ah, who gives a shit, I barely noticed in time. :D

Remember when I was the one constantly bitching about the weather? Anyway my guitars are ready to be picked up but the shop isn't open today (Sunday) and tomorrow is a public holiday for no reason other then that Australia likes random public holidays so I must wait until Tuesday to get back the Les Paul and my now drop-a tuned ML.

FA I can think of only one acceptable topic for your 10,000th post...how great I am in every possible way :D

Might be a forum issue, that happens with my browser occasionally too. Tapatalk really lost me with their shitty updates, though.

I guess I should be happy. I found my Moving Pictures cd in the Karelian Isthmus case. My copy of Individual Thought Patterns is gone, which sucks. I shudder to think what else I'll find missing when I finally get around to going through my collection.

Got my guitars back today. Not exactly happy with the job that was done particularly factoring in the time it took. I mean guitars are back in working order and that's fantastic BUT big problem with the tuning of the ML. I asked for it to be drop A tuned and technically at least he has done so using the EBGDAA variant. Unfortunately that's not the configuration I asked for. I wanted the AEADF#B layout. So I have to try and do that myself.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
