130. Pestilength - Eilatik, Spain

This is great, but then their career went nowhere.

IKR, though it’s something of a miracle that demo is so easily accessible tbh.

Gorgoroth - Pentagram

Who knew?

We can agree that this is a good album.

And it's not even prog! You're just saying that because you just woke up in a good mood for some reason on this beautiful freezing Canberra wintery morning (could be Mrs T-guy might've given in and let you have a root Friday night? nudge-nudge, wink-wink) and you haven't had a chance to get sick of me and my squoggles yet today. Don't you worry Doc, you won't like either of these next two albums/bands.

It's lucky it was a Friday night root. With morning temperatures in Canberra down to -5 (with a feels like temp of -8 which seems to be the fad in reporting these days), he wouldn't have wanted to try and get a leg over this morning. Old man leg, sub zero temps, he'd have probably cracked the leg getting over.

I like that Wraith album

Of course you do, 'cause it's thrash.

As far as the cold temps are concerned, where there's a will there's a way.

Saxon - "Destiny"

Definitely my least favorite Saxon album, but it's not as bad as I originally assessed.

Saxon - "Solid Ball of Rock"

Incredibly underrated

Saxon - "Forever Free"

Saxon - "Dogs of War"

Unbelievably underrated

Saxon - "Unleash the Beast"

Saxon - "Metalhead"

One of their heaviest

Saxon - "Killing Ground"

Underrated big time

But it's black first therefore I like black metal!

When you get to that age and that cold the only will that comes into effect when trying to get your leg over is the last will and testament.

On the black/thrash spectrum it was 95% thrash.

Dude I just checked, it's 46° right now in Canberra, not really that cold, it's more like a nice spring day. And anyway I'm sure he has blankets on the bed and I betcha Doc even has heat in his house.

But even M-A list them as Blackened Speed/Thrash Metal/Punk. Surely the first mentioned can't less than 5% of their chosen genre. Furthermore the first one should be the majority percentage.

When Doc posted his message it had risen just about zero, presumably if he was getting his leg over it was before he typed his message and not while he was tying his message, and certainly not several hours later as it is now. He may well have heat in his house but as an old aged pension in this country where power bills are rising between 80-90% over the next 12 months he can't afford the power.

It was minus 6C overnight and still minus 1C when I had my run. My budget does run to a doona and the odd blanket. We have heating but it is only on early and late as we have warm clothing.

I have just come in from working in the gardening and it is sunny and mild. Lovely.

And a heads up. I am about to start putting my music on Bandcamp. No, you won't like it but I'll let you know more once I'm live - in the promotion thread I guess.

Sounds like a summers day in Canberra to me, I don’t know who’s the genius was. He thought it was a good idea to put our capital city in the middle of nowhere…

As usual you have things exactly backwards Orca. M-A has the genre correct for once, but when us genre-aware individuals call something 'black/thrash' or 'blackened speed metal' we are talking about thrash or speed metal that's been blackened to some extent. Could be a little blackened, could be a lot. In Wraith's case it's been very gently blackened in the vocal dept. Just blackened enough so that I can listen to and enjoy it.

Now for the stuff that leans more black than thrash, we'd call that thrashy black metal, or just plain black metal, as most black metal already has a certain amount of thrash baked into it. In the same way that thrash aready has the hardcore baked into it. The exception to this of course would be the kinds of black metal Doc listens to that aren't actually black metal.

"Everyone" who? Let's see, there's your wife, the cows, the goats, the fat guy who slices up your livestock into freezer stock, the dude at the servo who pumps your petrol, and the old lady at the bottle-O who rings up your piss. Am I leaving anyone out? Whomever you bash your trolley into at the Coles.

117. Scorpions - Lovedrive

The Scorpions had to have some of the most head scratching album covers of all time. Schenker is still one of my favorite guitarists from that era, but man they made some poor decisions. I'll never forget angering a German foreign exchange student when I joked that I'd have left the Berlin wall up if it could've prevented Winds of Change from ever being recorded.

The old lady at the bottle-o was put off work due to lack of sales. I haven't drunk alcohol since about Christmas time.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
