As to the complaint about Behold...The Arctopus being random, I don't hear it that way. I'm not foolish enough to think I could possibly sway anybody's opinion on this though. Music wouldn't be a matter of taste and preference if I could. Even somebody like Schoonenberg had the twelve tone system in place as a guide to his compositions. Not that Schoonenberg comes without his share of detractors. There's something very enjoyable about B...TA that I find inviting and well worth my time. The atonal and completely alien sound is a part of it. The degree to which the notes being played are meticulously controlled to purposely avoid melody is another. It makes me really want to put them under a microscope and closely examine every detail. That's probably just my wiring though.

Yes, I admit I exaggerated when I used the term "random" in relation to BtA's music.

But that's how I felt when I listened to the album. I'm used to "twisted" stuff like Necrophagist, Watchtower and Spiral Architect, but I always manage to be attracted to something. This didn't happen with BtA.

Of course, common sense would dictate that I insist, but it gave me a headache and I hate that.

Behold... The Arctopus - Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning

I got this album from a friend about 15 years ago and really liked it for a while, but I haven't played it in several years. Funny how some of you are shitting on it for being too chaotic, I had remembered it being more spastic and inaccessible than this. I think the mix sounds a bit unpolished and the playing is a little rough and loose sometimes, and maybe that makes it feel a little more frantic than it is. And maybe it comes off a little less intelligible without the "glue" a vocal would provide. Not surprised some of y'all don't get it, I would never expect the Goatster to enjoy a Colin Marston vehicle. But I'm happy this prompted me to put it back on. Philistines.

Neither do I.

Thank you Nasty. I agree with all you wrote here. They are a fun listen, innit? Neither you nor I are attempting to change the GG's mind - I just want to needle him a bit - but there are plenty here with different ears and some may appreciate the Arctopussy..

And, by the way all, the version of NNC Summoning I have is the one with the live versions of all the songs after the originals, proving - and it didn't need proving to me - that they ain't playing at random. The live versions are tight and almost the same as the originals.

NP - KLAUSE SHULTZ & LISA GERRARD - Dziękuję Bardzo - Vielen Dank. Not metal at all but a nice way to start the day.

Re B…tA if I want something atonal I have Gorguts, Portal, etc etc, maybe one day, it will click but for right now I don’t see the appeal.

NP: Gorguts - Obscura

Ah. Gorguts. Sooner or later every metalhead has to come across the Obscura album somewhere on their journey. You don't have to like it, and you certainly shouldn't be coerced into liking it by some of the more militant gatekeepers out there. Just have to come to terms with it. Lemay is a freaking legend in certain circles. I personally love the album, but I don't think it should overshadow the first two which are excellent albums in their own right.

Damn fine. Reminds me of Angelcorpse. Gives off that awesome 'there is no off switch' kind of energy that I love to hear.

Most would say Gorguts’ less conventional death metal sound is where they truly excel, personally I find this something enjoyable about most of their discography.

NP: B4rbar4 - Forfeiture of Repentance (2024) {Czech Republic}

okay, so getting the obvious out of the way that’s a stupid name for a band, now it is entirely possible that’s just my text to speech software not reading things correctly but otherwise come on… now, for the music, no frills death metal, it’s certainly done well, just don’t expect this album to reinvent the club, the one we’ve got still works just fine for bludgeoning people over the head…

it’s just dawned on me that we are barely over a month into 2024, and already I’ve heard the same amount of new releases for this year that I did in the entirety of 2023

Slower - Slower (2024) {USA}

okay so I’m not going to lie. I felt like a complete idiot after it took me a solid five minutes to realise these are just Slayer covers slowed right down, and down, tuned to what I think is B standard. In my defence playing those tracks, this slowly gives them a completely different feel, but at the end of the day it’s a novelty album. I’d listen to once, and then forget about.

I enjoy Considered Dead just slightly more than Erosion of Sanity, but they're both enjoyable. Obscura however is a monument, and one of the landmark albums in all of extreme metal.

This one's going to get some extra spins. I think they may have exaggerated the black metal element on the "blackened death" label, but the songs are well crafted, competent, and the instruments have just about the right amount of impact. It's not quite the 'shock and awe' that it aspires to, but definitely lays down some pretty serious cover fire.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

      Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

      There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

      Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

      The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

      There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
