I only knew Abigor by name, but I'd never listened to it before. It's because you mentioned it that I thought "here's another band you only know by name! I listened and was pleasantly surprised by what I heard.

I picked up the album and Proscriptor's McGovern Apsû at the same time.

Tomorrow morning, I know what I'm going to listen to: these two records.

As for Abigor, I'll say what I thought of it.

Cool. They seem like the kind of band you'd enjoy. The last one from 2020 was another late December ninja release and I think it's fantastic. Their mid 90s stuff is awesome as well. I don't know why, but I had a hard time getting into them, until things finally clicked a few years ago. Maybe I just hadn't heard the right albums. It helped to be in a band with some die-hard Abigor fanatics, too.

My favorites are Nachthymnen:

Verwüstung:

Time Is The Sulphur In The Veins Of The Saint:

Totschläger:

S'up gents. Been a minute. New job is quite busy so not much time for fucking around on the interwebs. Hopefully the new year is treating you all well. Now that we've made it through the brutal Florida week of winter, things are picking up around here. Spring Breakers will be arriving in the next few weeks. Oh the joys of living in Florida.

Music wise, fest season is getting cranked up too. The agenda this year is quite busy. Kicks off Sunday with the 70K cruise. Lots of Disney princess metal on the bill, but also some decent stuff (Marduk, Sodom, My Dying Bride, and a few others). 5 days of drunken debauchery with 3000 of my closest international friends. Hell's Heroes in March, and of course MDF in May. Lots of shows in between too (Judas Priest in May, Metallica in July). My travel points will be on the rise.

Local shows have been picking up as well. Last night, couple of good semi-local bands (Herakleion and Void from Louisiana). Wednesday is Dead Register from Atlanta. Most recently, we had The Dwarves, Goatwhore/Withered/Spiter, Howling Giant/Restless Spirit, Daikaiju, and probably a few others I'm forgetting. So even though the job is beating me down, I've still been able to get out to hang with the local heshers.

Okay your saying, shut the fuck up navy and tell us what you're listening to. That's the point of the thread right. Here goes:

This morning:

Kreig - Ruiner

Bull of Apis Bull of Bronze - The Fractal Ouroboros

Helms Deep - Treacherous Ways - solid trad metal from my home state of Florida. Good vocals and killer riffage.

Santacreu - Cancons d'Amor, Dol i Enyoranca - really digging this one. Like a heavier DVNE. Stonery doom from Barcelona.

Hauntologist - Hollow

Ildaruni - Beyond Unseen Gateways

Lots of other recent purchases to run through later. Need to update the EOTY thread when I get a chance too. Won't be much, maybe 15 total. Just wasn't able to dive too deep last year due to job/family responsibilities. Fingers crossed this year is back to normal, and I can get around here more as well.

Hells yeah, Navy! Glad to see you back man. I've been wondering about you. I went pretty incognito myself to the river until list season and I've been over indulging in new music-like a year's worth of music in two months-my wife is telling me to knock it off LOL. Glad you're doing well albeit overworked!

I liked that Witch Reaper pretty well, almost picked it up and then passed on it.

I just grabbed Poison Ruin/Harvest. If you haven't heard it Navy, I think it would be right up your ally. Straight up punk with maybe a crust angle, but it's mostly just nasty F-U punk with a medieval twist which gives it some metal cross over. Plus they were picked up by Relapse so that's clearly a market they're aiming for. Seems to be getting some love in metal circles. Very cool, gritty stuff.

Yeah man, I listened to this last spring or summer, pretty cool record. One part Amebix, one part Motörhead, one part The Exploited. But to my surprise they turned out to be from Philly.

NP - KRIEG - Ruiner

Earlier today it was indeed WALK THROUGH FIRE - Hope Is Misery. When 80 minutes of misery is just barely enough.

Man up and face the gloom.

I'm cool with the gloom and the wall of noise, but some actual riffs would've been nice, don'tcha think Docka Block?

Misery & Extinction of Mankind – Apocalyptic Crust, Minneapolis/UK 2001. Cool split where instead of each band getting their own side, they alternate tracks, Misery gets the odd numbered tracks, EoM gets the even ones. They then collaborate on track 13.

Necroweasel -  Brave New World, Bruce Dickenson side project with guest vox by Di'anno.

Rumpa-rumpa music for the 21st century.

I don't even know what this means. Must be that stupid Aussie rhyming slang again. What rhymes with rumpa,....lumpa, thumpa, bumpa, dumpa, mumpa, jumpa, strumpa, frumpa, humpa...I don't know, nothing's coming to me. Can you give me a hint?

Maybe he's finally lost the plot. I hear it happened to old people

I've explained this to you before, but you forget stuff because you don't get enough sleep.

Rumpa rumpa rumpa rumpa (a dotted quarter note and an eight note approximates the sound of a rumpa) is the sound of 1960s/70s blues boogie that was ubiquitous in Australia. It was widely deprecated by any musician not in a rumpa rumpa band. I didn't make this up. I think Frank Gambale made it up or maybe he got it from someone else.By extension the ubiquitous crust punk groove is the inheritor of the sobriquet 'rumpa rumpa' music even though it actually doesn't make a rumpa rumpa sound. I did make that up.

All clear now?

What's an eighth note?

And what have you got against 60's/70's blues boogie? What else would one have been listening to in the late 60's and early 70's? It was either that, or do-wop 50's rock & roll, or hippie flower power acid rock. Unless you were into jazz or classical or something really crazy like 60's pop or gospel music or C&W or something.

I reckon there'll be plenty of time to sleep when I'm dead.

It’s 41° here at the moment, 105° for those of you, who measure temperature the wrong way, perfect sludge weather

Is that even safe for human beings to be subjected to 105° conditions like that? How can you even breathe when it's that hot? Air-con must be working overtime. If the power goes out you're screwed mate. I'd make my way to the neatest A&E hospital and seek help. Maybe they could pack you in ice or something til the molten inferno subsides.

You never know they could’ve been listening to the blues, Howland, Wolf, and Muddy Waters had been putting out music for years by that point…

Honestly, I’m surprised it’s taken until this late in the summer for Adelaide to get its first 40+ Celsius day, you get this to it When you’ve lived here all your life. But yes if the power goes out I’m right fucked

Abigor - Taphonomia Aeternitatis - Gesänge im Leichenlicht der Welt (2023)

I've just listened to the album twice in a row and I have to say that I haven't managed to form an opinion yet.

The music seems to go off in all directions, exploring different horizons. I really like the chiselled, crystal-clear riffs at times, the female vocals that sometimes make an appearance and the wild accelerations that suddenly appear.

As a reminder, this is the first Abigor album I've listened to, so I'm discovering both the band and their world.

For the moment, I'd say it's special. But not in a pejorative sense! I listen to a lot of convoluted/complex music but this is something else again.

In any case, it's an album that takes a lot more than 2 listens to get into.

Edit : Let's go for a 3rd listening session! 🎧

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
