I very much doubt it would take as many as 10 LastFm fans with questionable music taste to make us redundant.

Man. Everybody putting up their last.fm accounts for summary judgement. I'm almost afraid to dig up mine. It's been at least a decade since I used that site.

NP: Infinity - The Untamed Hunger

I was completely unaware of this bands existence. It seems they've had a long and not insignificant career at this point that has somehow managed to slip past me. I suppose you don't get seven full studio albums in without doing something right so I'll give it a spin.

More mid-90's style Scandinavian type material. It feels like this stuff's been hounding me this year. The more I hear of the newer stuff, the more I realize just how pivotal the production values are to this particular niche. Too slick and you can end up weakening the impact of your songwriting, but go too harsh and you'll always end up selling one or two aspects of your sound short. It's why my favorites this year have been the mid-level bands that capture a wall-of-sound sort of density. This stuff might actually be on the too slick end of things for my taste. Still good, though. The dynamics come through and they do a very good job maintaining a songs momentum where too many black metal bands will collapse into the same chord patterns, but with quiet acoustics way too early to allow any real build to occur before the catharsis. Not album of the year by any means, but worth a listen.

Oh yeah, Burial Hordes! These guys were supposed to release something soon weren't they...

NP: Burial Hordes - Ruins

FUCK. YES. Instant purchase. Love this stuff

Probably my favorite Greek black metal band. Most people would cite you a bunch of 90's bands as the best Greek black metal has to offer and they're entitled to their opinions but I'll stick with my Burial Hordes. Their whole discography is solid: 5 full lengths, 2 EP's and I haven't actualy heard any of their 3 splits but I suspect they'd be good too. My friends were mixed on the new one but they're poseurs, this shit is slammin'.

Ok so that was pretty terrible. When GG mentioned that they sounded like Metallica I thought he was going silly, but holy shit he's damn right. That's not the Evile I remember.

I'd never heard of them before this year either. And I also thought it was a bit too slick for me, but not by much. First spin did not inspire a purchase, but it's definitely a good album, I've made a mental note to revisit at some point before I shut the door on Infinity for good.

This little 18 minute EP of Bathory covers released together with their new album is so fucking awesome.

Demilich - Nespithe

One of my top ten all time favorites. I almost wish the vocals weren't as attention grabbing as they are so people new to it could latch onto the music. I love the vocals, but that album is so much more than that.

I thought the two promo tracks I heard on YT were pretty good, but I think this one's even slicker than the Infinity. Don't know why I feel like I want to take points off for them just being from down the road here in DC and not somewhere farther north with windswept icy cold boreal forests. Definitely want to hear the whole thing when it comes out next week though. If I remember. Band name is a mouthful and will be impossible to recall in a week. Honestly can't decide if I love this white ice motif they have going or hate it. Who knows, this could be one of those times when I listen to it again in another day or two and wonder wtf I could have been thinking.

Vargsang - Throne of the Forgotten, 2005 Germany

Vargsang - In the Mist of Night, 2014. For me this is one of the world's most perfect 42 minute black metal albums. I couldn't possibly improve upon this in any way.

I can get behind the ice thing. If they start down the whole 'inspired by At The Mountains of Madness' bit I might subtract some points. We seriously need some more Titans in the Weird Tales genre so metal bands can knock it off with the Lovecraft thing. Stephen King did a little, and arguably Clive Barker did a little more, but come on guys, there's gotta be more than that for your metal inspiration. I've heard the Malazan series can get pretty weird. Maybe try that out.

Anyways I actually really liked the ice dudes since they had that higher end buzzsaw guitar going and they kept it riffy. That's usually what I'm looking for with that kind of stuff: a little more raw and a little less mopey. I'll try out this Vargsang now, too I suppose. After that I gotta switch to death metal for the evening.

the Malazan series

Oh boy brother Cabbage now you are talking. I am in the middle of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series and it is beyond epic. The most challenging fiction I have read but so rewarding. If anyone is info fantasy, and is sadistic in tackling volume and complexity this is one to check out. And it is super metal, with everything from undead hordes to cannibals to monsters to barbarians to sorcerers and dragons. I don't care I will nerd the f out on these books. They are hard-core violent, savagely real-politic, hilarious at times, but also pretty enlightened with philosophical insights into religion, relationships, the human condition in general. And the demi-god condition. There's a bunch of gods and demi-gods and immortals. The shit spans like 300K years or something ridiculous. Ok I'll shut up, just stoked it got a reference here!

Alright. That's it. That's the next series I'm reading. Put it off for too long. Gotta see what all this hullabaloo is about.

In the meantime it turns out I actually have some Malazan themed death metal. Huh. Who knew?

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
