Worst album by one of your favourite bands

Recommended Posts

Mine is easy: Cold Lake - Celtic Frost

There aren;t proper words to express how utterly cheated and disappointed I was with this. After the majesty of Into The Pandemonium I was so looking forward to Cold Lake. Its even a great name for a CF album. Then I put it on and.....aaarrrgggh. So awful I've never given it a second listen. I hear Tom refuses to even discuss it these days.

(edited to reflect @MacabreEternal's positive comments about promoting discussion)

Okay, but why is it the worst album?  We can't just have a list of "bad" albums as that won't promote discussion.  Props for starting the thread but we just need more detail.

For example, I have never gotten on with The Rack by Asphyx.  It is widely regarded as one their best releases but I find it completely underwhelming and lacking any real punch to the riffs or depth to the sound overall.  It is almost like they triumphed with the design but fell short on the content.  Compared with the riff machine that is Last One On Earth it classes as a very poor effort and I even rank Death The Brutal Way over the debut.

Had they started off with a better debut Asphyx would have grabbed my attention a lot earlier than they did and it wasn't until I worked backwards from Deathhammer that I got to their earlier stuff really because The Rack put me off exploring more when I first heard it.

Man, oh man where do I start.

St. Anger - Metallica

Poorly written, poorly recorded and has a terrible mix and sound. Considering that the band feels this took them back to their roots, I think they missed the mark - by a mile.

Criptic Writings and Risk - Megadeth

Simply not Megadeth caliber albums. To "smooth" and "poppy". Not their best.

X Factor - Iron Maiden

I grade this one on a curve due to it being Blaze's first album with band, but they still had the same writers. Don't know if Harris was trying to not sound like a Bruce led Maiden, but that is what was accomplished with this album. It's good, but not IM good. Virtual IX brought back some of the Maiden sound and feel, but still not the same.

Path of Totality - Korn

I know a lot of people didn't like this album. It's not that I don't like it, there  are some really good songs on here, but it is definitely my least favorite of their discography. I feel the band lost a little of their sound and musical identity when Brian left, but there is some good stuff in there on the four albums without him.

I believe they found themselves again in "Serenity of Suffering" and just reinforced it with "The Nothing"  the latter being probably one of their heaviest albums.

Undisputed Attitude - Slayer

Simply put, this is an album Slayer didn't need to do...........

With you on most of your list but this is actually one of my favourite modern-Slayer releases (well in fact the only one I like after Seasons in the Abyss).  I can see how it isn't for everyone but I love its punky attitude and slight variance from what we had come to expect from the band at this point.  By no means their best but still a good record to me.

Burzum Umskiptar 2012

Burzum - Umskiptar

While I have not listened to the newest release, I still think that I have to pick this one.  Of all of Varg's post-prison bm, this is probably the most forgettable.

Completely understand. I still dig it out occasionally but it is not in the Slayer rotation. Slayer is always a good listen............🤘

St. Anger: Won't say much, been done to death. I don't *hate* it, but, easily Metallica's worst sounding album. When they said back to their roots, maybe they shouldn't have gone *that* far back lol

Risk: What happens when a record label, who doesn't know what to do with thrash, gets a hold of thrash legends? Risk. Risk is what happened. Not even gonna talk about the mix or any of that business. What I will say is that is was a BORING Megadeth album. Those are words that shouldn't go together.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!
