That's funny. When I was in Australia I met up with this dude Carl from our previous forum who happens to be an architect from Marrickville "inner west" Sydney. We met up several different times since I was in town for 5 weeks. I'd hop on the train and find him wherever he'd told me to meet him, and then take a taxi back to mum's later because they don't run the trains all night long in Sydney which is stupid. Once was the cricket match at some big stadium grounds in Sydney, but the other times our meetups were at a "hotel" or a pub to see some live local Ausrock bands. And what struck me as the biggest difference to watering holes in the states was that there were no stouts on tap. All the Aussie beer these establishments had on offer was piss colored. I expected that at the cricket stadium, but was a little surprised to find that at all of the pubs. I had to ask Carlissimo which beer to order as I was not familiar with any of the local Aussie brews.

Until recently Aussie pubs were controlled by contracts and to a large extent they still are. Pubs signed a contract with one or the other leading brewer which got them decent prices on keg beer which they pushed hard because the more they sold the more incentives they got from the brewery. For a quite a few years we didn't even have cross border beer on tap (i.e NSW brewed was not available in other states. Vic brewed not available in other states etc). It could be bought by the bottle or by the can over the bar but it was dearer and most people just ordered by the glass.

The main reason things opened up was because many breweries got bought out by other breweries. By the time the Japanese and Taiwanese companies started buying all our local breweries things opened up a bit more. But it was still in a bar's best interest to push their tap beer and the tap beer was chosen by the biggest incentive. There was often only three different beers on tap and those were the ones that were heavily marketed on tv and in newspapers etc. These days things have changed a little bit with more bars offering IPA's and even cider on tap but it's only in the last decade or so that it's happened.

It's much the same here in the states. There are a few major brands of piss-water so ubiquitous here that you can find them in pretty much any bar in the entire country, and often not much else. But since the craft beer explosion we've had the last 15 years or so that has changed in a lot of places and there's a lot more variety to be found now. Generally won't find them on tap though, (unless it's at a craft beer specialty pub who advertizes they have dozens of beers on tap) the used motor oil brews typically get sold in bottles or cans here I assume because most customers still want the same old piss-water they've been drinking for the last 20 - 40 years.

I'm pretty sure there used to be a few places in NSW that had motor oil on tap. Tooheys, (NSW's piss water) made a stout that I seem to remember being on tap in a few Leagues clubs in the burbs when I was living there.

These days we have micro breweries set up in city blocks for the hipsters to go to, while the seasoned barflies hang out at the same dingy shit holes where your feet stick to the carpet and the place doesn't look like it's been cleaned in a decade. Those old barflies aren't changing pubs for anyone, they'll even get used to a new beer if the bar changes contract but keeps the same owner.

I like rye whiskey so I like the significant variation in flavor profiles from one brand to another. But it can be a bit of a double edged sword. Seems there's new whiskeys coming on the market all the time. But you can't always count on them to be availabe in a lot of places, and many of them are quite pricey compared to the traditional legacy brands which are already pricey. (even if they're not terribly dear compared to what you nut jobs have been paying for booze down under all along) It's definitely good to have the choice to try something new and different though. Still I've been burned a few times when I've bought some shit that sounded like it'd be really good but then was not. Anyone can type up some marketing blurb for the label, doesn't mean that's what it's actually going to taste like.

Very true, there is one YouTuber I watch who has quite similar taste to me, so I generally know if he enjoys something I probably will as well. That being said he doesn’t drink rye, so I really don’t have any knowledge on that side of whiskey.

I was running through my head trying to think of a play on Cinnamon Toast Crunch's old add campaign from way back, the best I could think of was "The taste you can see, until you've had eight or so". I think I can sort of understand why my parents hated those commercials so much... at least until that fucking Honeycomb monster came out and took the annoyance factor of child-targeted marketing to a whole new level.

I had 5 Finnish Long Drinks (8%) playing golf today. Made the round enjoyable it didn't make my score better. I don't like gin, but I can drink these things all day.

Options are a little limited where I am and since that was the first Belgian beer ever tried going back six or seven years ago, now, where does the time go, I find it preferable to Stella Artois. With that being said, ordinarily, my first choice would be Duvel but they were out of stock sadly.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

      Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.


      There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

      Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

      The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.  


      There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
