Just picked up some French Toast Bastard and Kentucky Breakfast Stout Bourbon Barrel edition on my weekly supply run. Will have to check out the FTB after dinner to see what Surge is talking about.

I was thrown by FT Bastard when I bought a single but it's got a Charlie and The Chocolate Factory like ability to layer the flavors-wild. Definitely one of the more unique beers I've had. So, last week sprung for the 4 pack and it's def grown on me as a desert drink.

Tonight after FINALLY finishing my 1.2 acre of leaf removal as I'm backed up against woods and tree lines....Founders Dirty Bastard scotch-yes, Surge's love of Scotch has had me branch out a bit...and Oscar Blues Ten FIDY on Navy's reco which is a very nice pour,

My stout binge continues. I've been picking a 4 or 6 pack or two each weekend. Found one that has to be one of the most metal names in all of beer especially if you are a Megadeth fan.

Left Hand Path-Wake Up Dead-this rules. Imperial Stout with a big bold flavor. At 10.2% a little goes a long way.

Fireball is one of those frat boy/white girl sort of drinks I shouldn't like, but I do. Shit goes down way too easy. So I avoid it unless I'm in the mood to get absolutely wrecked.

Had a couple of decent English Coffee Brown Ales from a local brewery and polished off the night with a couple of fingers of Eagle's Rare bourbon. Now that it's cold out, I think my bourbon stocks need replinishment.

I don't think we have frat boys here so I guess I'll have to be a white girl. TBH I prefer Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire to Fireball but if a carrier pigeon dropped a bottle on my doorstep I wouldn't let it go to waste.

You can have all my Fireball then. But I'm not sure our American carrier pigeons can make the Pacific crossing. Maybe if I poured it into small bottles and used multiple birds.

No frat boys down under?

We don't have Frats downs here as far as I know, but I say that having never been to university. I'm sure they must exist but they must have a different name. Usually when there is a bunch of guys like the pic above they are at the horse racing, or in an open plan office.

You’re right actually frats don’t really exist. Instead you get the first year pub crawl, or law school pub crawl…

Having been to uni (twice for two separate degrees) and my wife just finishing hers, I can say we don't do frat houses.  There are residential colleges but these are open to anyone with cash and most are geared to international students.

The university I attended actually had no soul and no vibe at either Hobart or Launceston campuses.  The student unions were not interested in promoting any kind of culture or life.   Nearly none of the undergraduates I knew were really interested in what they were studying and most spent as little time on campus as required.  They also weren't very politically driven even among the students doing political science.

Students were literally there to get a bit of paper and that was it.  Most of the students were about as intellectual as the dumbest bogan.

I found it very, very, very disappointing.

My wife had similar experiences except of course things had deteriorated between when I was there last in 2005 and when she started in 2015-ish.  When I've been to uni to pick her up it is largely empty.  Most students now go online or simply don't attend anything except compulsory tutorials.

The university now struggles to attract and retain teaching staff cause it treats them like shit.  The university has been embroiled in scandals by basically passing fee paying foreign students without them completing work (nearly all Aussie unis do this).

One of my mates was head of school of IT - he lost 2/3rds of his teaching staff over last few years.  He became head of ethics and ended up taking a voluntary redundancy and has nothing but contempt for them.

The university's main concern now is property development and churning money from international students.

I've had some good beers lately. I just finished up a 6 pack of Bell's Kalamazoo stout last night. Rich and flavorful without being too heavy or high ABV. Had a few bigger ones recently, too - Deth's Tar stout from Revolution Brewing, a 14.8% barrel aged number which was honestly a little too boozy for me (still really good); Whiskey Barrel Stout from Boulevard, delicious, my favorite of the lot; Double Negative imperial stout from Grimm, nicely balanced and very good as expected.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have anything left for a New Year's celebration. Humbug.

You must be feeling better, FA!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
