  1. Greetings! What bands and styles do you enjoy?
  2. Given the coronavirus situation now, merchandise is becoming more important than ever. Genocide Organ was going to tour the US, but had to cancel. Luckily they put up a few shirts for sale to help them cut their losses (bought both).
  3. I used to paint a lot of stuff with small, details, so it is always interesting to hear the processes of others. It's a weird feeling to put so much time/effort into something and then to suddenly have it finished. I really like what you said about trying to work in balance with each new stage - it seems like a strategy that has worked very well!
  4. Awesome! With something this detailed, how do you know when it is finished?
  5. I have been listening to this recently: I have never heard of this band before, but they play some really interesting industrial black metal. Very beat-driven.

    Metal Memes

This should be amended: everyone should be starting their one-man DSBM projects about now!
  7. Any thoughts on the new Burzum?
  8. In fact, direct participation might help one learn more than simply sharing a survey!
  9. Welcome! I am not good at math at all...
  10. Sovereign - "Alcoholic Obsession"
  11. I really like band shirts, and always try to get some representing my favorite bands. Aside from just clothing, though, I think its really cool when releases come packaged with stickers, patches, or some other little addition.

    Mayhem

It really is shocking, now that you mention it. Most bands seem to produce a greater volume of material the longer they are around, but Mayhem seems to have done the opposite.
  14. At this point essentially any cultural product is considered appropriate for research. There are ways in which this is really great, but too many "research projects" are carried out simply for the sake of furthering a political agenda.
  15. I honestly don't think that was ever the point of the thread in the first place. However, you idea sounds infinitely better.
  16. Honestly, it is difficult or impossible to make any productive statements in this thread without some sort of data about women in metal (maybe we should all just fill out the copy-paste survey!). Again, I think it would be really interesting/enlightening to see statistics on women in metal by genre. But that's why they sell guitars in different sizes, so (among other reasons) people with different hand sizes can all play well.
  17. Perhaps that might be evidence of my earlier claim that women might more commonly sing in metal bands than play instruments in them because their voices sound different from those of men?
  18. I think it would be less likely that fewer women are interested in playing musical instruments than men, than playing a particular style. Perhaps, statistically, women tend to not enjoy metal as much as men do? It could be the result of the rather masculine culture surrounding metal, Western gender expectations, or maybe even the themes associated with different styles of metal. Also, I would be interested in learning statistics of women in metal by the genre that they play. Perhaps an answer to that question first would better explain what is going on in the genre as a whole. And for the record, I would have absolutely no problem with a woman filling any role in a metal band, provided she is talented.
  19. Perhaps specific sub-styles have these thematic tendencies, but I would argue that metal is too diverse for this to apply generally to the style as a whole. There are metal songs about chasing girls, just as there are some Satanic rock bands.

    Mayhem

It's cool that the riff the Emperor track used got an official release. It was my impression that it had only been available on bootlegs.
  21. Requiem Speaks Sophisticated Black Metal Art Words Exclusively...
  22. I think the reason that women in metal are mostly associated with vocalists (despite the fact that there are women who do other things in bands) is that vocals are the only area in metal music where women would be noticeably different from men. I don't think there is any reasonably basis to determine from the sound of a guitar or drums that the musician playing it must be a man or a woman - in fact, musicians of equal skill would be indistinguishable on the basis of gender from simply the sound of their playing. For vocals, however, a woman would sound different from a man.
  23. I guess it depends on what you mean by popular. If you only want bands that have "certified silver" albums, then I am probably not much help in your search. However, there are many new bands that are popular in various niche metal subgenres that I could name (if you are interested). Also, is there any particular reason why you are searching for young metal bands?
  24. I have heard lots of great things about that podcast from some of my friends too, so I should definitely check it out. It is good to know that they explore thinkers from around the world too! So far, the text that has been most influential on me that I have read has been Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. I had the great honor of being able to read it in a class taught by a true Nietzsche scholar right before he retired, and this book (and his class) got me fascinated by Nietzsche. I love the writing style of the book and its great vocabulary. I also found a lot of interesting ideas throughout. I'm not sure why some scholars like to call Nietzsche's writing style "adolescent," as this was some of the most mature, developed writing that I have ever come across.
