What's on your mind?

That's actually part of why I'm not doing it anymore. Remember how I talked previously about disliking putting a numerical rating on albums? Well, that grew more and more difficult for me, and then recently, I googled a band that I had given a negative review, and my review was the fourth result. It's been shared on Facebook tons and tons of times. And you know what, I felt guilty for it. Who am I to pass down judgement like I'm some kind of expert? It just started to bother me. When you combine that with the fact that I wasn't really happy with the direction the owner was taking, and especially the way he was treating certain people who would approach him asking to be reviewed on the site, it really just didn't seem worth it anymore. I'm glad I did it when I did and got a chance to interview NTNR and BAN, and I hope that helped them out some. I'd actually still really enjoy doing write-ups and interviews, but that doesn't seem to be what the owner wants.
Well, I can see what you mean about feeling guilty about writing a negative review, but remember that this is your opinion that we're talking about. I don't think that you should have to restrain yourself and what you want to write about, as there is plenty of music that sucks too. For the record, when I read reviews, I tend to put little faith behind them until I read other reviews that reviewer has written. Reviews are all about taste, and without context of other things that they like and dislike, it can be difficult to ascertain whether or not their view of any given piece of music would reflect on your own. Besides, I'm sure that your negative review was still much nicer for the band or fans to read than the shit that internet trolls fling with their keyboards. Be thoughtful and articulate, say what you truly feel, and you will do fine. I enjoyed our interview as well, thanks again for the opportunity. We finally have a full band together again, we have 6 new songs written for a new album, 2 of which we'll be demoing at some point, and we have a potential show coming up that would be a great one to bring us back into the live setting with. With all of this going on, having a recent interview is definitely helpful. Let me know if you decide to start writing for another site, I would be interested in checking it out.

Thanks man. Like I said, my conflicts about reviewing were only part of the issue, I really dislike what the owner is doing and of course I have no power over it. But yeah, I will let you know if I end up writing for something else. I would like to at some point.

2 busy days coming up. I have to be at the dentist at 2PM today and got invited to a blitz (=5min each) chess tournament at 8PM. I don't enjoy chess as I used to anymore, but I guess it's a good way to spend my time anyway. I can't be bothered preparing for anything though, so benoni and scandinavian and smith-morra it is. My schedule for tomorrow starts with my weekly cello lesson at 1PM, followed by a circuit bending/cello jam session at 2PM and some more jamming with the drummer of what should have been Grimosia by now. Afterwards we'll grab a drink. Or drinks.

Stoic Dissention "Autochton"
I probably overlooked that one. I'll check that one out, since Relinquished... was very good.

The stress is building. Not knowing what day I will have to sit the supp exam coupled with the knowledge that failure means expulsion has me pretty wound up. To top it all off I have absolutely no idea what will be in this exam so can't possibly study for it efficiently. I will be a nervous wreck before long.

Thanks, guys! It's not as bad as it was yesterday, I just kind of want to hook my face up to a vacuum cleaner and suck all this crap out. And then sleep for a week.

Maybe you can just transpose the songs to a lower octave lol Hope you feel better :)
Heh, it's really the screaming/growling vocals I'm worried about getting right. We'll just have to see how the weekend goes.
Good luck! The anaesthesia from the dentist is almost worked out. It was about time...
Fucking dental work, aargh, I hate it, I need it, I can't afford it...

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
