Hey thanks' date=' I appreciate it lol I have a pair of boxers that I can wear around the house, but mostly I'm wearing jeans. I too am enjoying the a/c.[/quote'] Even though I prefer the cold, I haven't needed the AC here. It rained all day yesterday and even snowed in the mountains, and it looks like even with the sun out we'll only make it to 66 today. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

I'm having an unusually slow afternoon here at work' date=' and was thinking about doing some video posts in one of the genre sections. Anyone have any requests on which one they would like me to add more to?Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2[/quote']Some tasty doom/death or black metal wouldn't hurt :D

PROOOOOOG In all seriousness, I'd love to get more avant-garde recommendations. I'm busy checking out some of these new polished progressive black or death bands...Ne Obliviscaris was good, I'm going to listen to Cormorant, Anciients and Be'Lakor as well.

I know I've recommended Demilich a few times here if that's who you mean. Does that mean death metal would be your vote? Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
If death metal would be the chosen genre, then would it be possible to introduce some bands which use a bit less deep guttural vocals? The problem I have with death metal is that the vocals are too guttural to my liking and often start to seem monotonous to me, unless there's an extra bunch of melody to make up for it.

Illogicist, Korum, Lethargy, Obliveon, Amoral, Arsis, Aletheian, Punish and Fallujah all have higher-pitched vocals. Unhuman in particular have a pretty wide variety of oddball death growls.

I'll check some of them out after I'm done with this Anaal Nathrakh album

Did you check out all of the ones I had posted before? I'm checking now, and it looks like the video links broke, so I'll have to go back through and update them. I can't believe how long it's been since I've added to that thread though, maybe I will post more there, especially if you're craving more extreme progressive stuff, which tends to be my favorite side of the genre. Nice! That would be ideal right about now. I had to do the most dreaded thing one can do in this type of weather, turn the oven on. Think I need to start having a back up plan to avoid this from happening again. Is that normal temps for this time of year where you're @?

Nope, pretty abnormal, but Utah weather tends to be fickle. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

I got the travel bug again... I'm off to NYC this September. I miss you guys. I read the forums all the time in my phone but can't seem to make the time to reply, guilt ensues. Trying to make that effort today! I got my marijuana drivers license renewed for another year. That's basically just a medical cannabis card. I was thinking about the whole medical cannabis thing and how people make pot out to be so scandalous and horrible. I just don't get it. Society will come around in time I guess.

I loaded up my bass and road out to play with a new friend for the first time. He forgot(strike one) and was not there' date=' but some dust got knocked off gear that has not left the back of the closet for years, so not all was lost.[/quote'] I hate it when that happens. For your very first jam, it doesn't bode well. Are you trying to put together a group, or just play a bit for fun?

That might have something to do with the fact that it's against the law in the vast majority of states. I would theorize that not many people really give a rat's ass about the effects, what they don't like about people smoking weed is that they're breaking the law purely to enjoy themselves. Maybe people assume that legalizing it would encourage that kind of behavior, rather than finally kill the credibility of the notion that smoking weed somehow automatically makes you a more enlightened and circumspect individual.

I would theorize that not meany people really give a rat's ass about the effects' date=' what they don't like about people smoking weed is that they're breaking the law purely to enjoy themselves. Every stoner I've met on campus, UNM or here, has been an insufferably self-righteous, arrogant moron. Maybe people assume that legalizing it would encourage that kind of behavior.[/quote'] Not really. The law is based on misinformation and propaganda, it's unevenly applied, punishments can be draconian, and the classification of pot as a Schedule I drug is ludicrous. It's been shown to have benefits, especially in pain mitigation during certain illnesses and end-of-life care, and the claims of its various dangers have been largely debunked. I don't think people in general care so much about the legality of it, as they do the social stigma left over from the scare tactics used to criminalize marijuana in the first place. Deriving a moral argument from a demonstrably faulty law in an attempt to justify regulation of people's personal pleasure seems unnecessarily puritanical, as well as conflicting with your sometimes-professed libertarian leanings. Pot smokers aren't typically known for being insufferably arrogant; the stereotype of a lazy, unambitious and intellectually uninvolved person is far more prevalent. Both descriptions are overly generalized and inaccurate. I could apply the accusation of being an "insufferably self-righteous, arrogant moron" to members of various groups that I run into from time to time: proselytizing religious people, raw vegans, open-carry firearms advocates. Oh, and even some fellow atheists. There are enough counterexamples to give me pause before I dismiss every member of a group, or whatever argument they're making, on the basis of my personal feelings and the small sample set of my own experience. First it's smartphone owners, then it's potheads... who's next, samba dancers? Breeders of small dogs? Emoticon users? :D

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
