Any one watching the World Cup
I'd rather watch the dog next door take a crap on the neighbours lawn whilst being raped by an old person! Seriously here in England it never fails to amaze me how every 4 years the levels of stupidity peak through the roof and grown men resort to spending copious amounts of money betting on a team proven to be really crap at delivering anything like a half decent performance and then taking out their "frustrations" in the form of domestic violence. Like a bit of Premier League footy but the World Cup is ridiculous.

Nobody gets mad here in the US' date=' which might be because the only people here who care about soccer are Mexicans...and they're rooting for Mexico.[/quote'] Complete balderdash. There are tons of people here who apparently care very deeply about it, European and South American transplants as well as Muricans. Haven't seen riots, but heated arguments and barfights, sure.

Speaking of national pride' date=' I remember encountering a really funny paradox among the Evangelical community. They are perpetually tolling the death-knell of America As We Know It, the America Of The Founding Fathers, saying that America is Going Down The Drain, and yet when you suggest that maybe all of this ostensible degeneracy is the motivation behind the terrorism perpetrated by Islamic extremist groups all of a sudden we're the Last Best Hope for the Free World. On the same subject, it's also funny how they will openly advocate a theocratic America and in the same breath warn against Islamic extremism on the basis that it seeks a government with no difference between church and state...[/quote'] As I've said before, it can be difficult to perceive your own hypocrisy when your head is so far up your ass that your colon is blocking your view. It's the same thing as conservatives who bitch about welfare expenditures while supporting the big businesses that strip pay and benefits from their employees, which make them more reliant on state assistance. The same can be said about people who bitch about illegal immigration and border control, yet perpetuate Monsanto's monopoly on the agricultural market that dumps produce into Mexico for dirt cheap, bankrupting their farmers and making them look to us for work. To make it worse, we then continue to support the failed big agro model by not forcing them to document and pay taxes/fair wages on their illegal labor. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Similarly, I've seen a lot more people here in DC interested in the World Cup as well, but usually if they're Americans they're not representative of the whole. They're usually distinctly more globetrotting folks, and in a country where ostensibly only 10% of the population have passports I'm not inclined to expect that they're even a substantial minority. Speaking of which, Netherlands kicked the crap out of Spain. Brilliant. :D

And this is boring. More politics and laws, yay! Verstuurd vanaf mijn GT-I9505 met Tapatalk
It's all Atrocity's fault, this time... Thankfully, it's an easy one to stay out of. :D
How did I let this happen! I ran out of creamer and had to use vanilla ice cream in my coffee because milk just doesn't cut it with how strong I take it. Am pretty pleased with the outcome :)
Ha, sounds terrible, just awful. You poor thing. For some reason I have to drink mine black, these days. I just can't tolerate the taste of milk in my coffee anymore. It happened pretty abruptly a few months ago.

Oh' date=' I thought you were talking about this thread... Heh. Good luck, then. What topics are you interested in covering - not politics, I assume?[/quote'] Thanks! :) And well, a hard question to answer for me, haha. But earlier this year, I had an exam about society and media, which was really interesting. I never read a reader with so much enthousiasm actually.

Or, you're interested in writing about people who write about people who read articles about what other people have written about? Or will it be deconstruction of film criticism? :D

Thinking of moving house at the moment. Really bitten by the change bug since getting the new job and have been put onto a decent sounding rental by the seaside but not in a really commercial/touristy area. Going to have a look at it on Saturday, not too happy it's a flat (apartment) though but it does sound big enough and comes with utilities included in the monthly rental.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
