Apparently yesterday a small group of Far Right thugs attempted to march through the town centre near to where we live.  According to Facebook the everyday shoppers, market traders and business owners as well as the general public stood shoulder to shoulder and forced the mob to turn back from the town centre and disperse.  Allegedly the thugs were targeting a hotel not far from the centre that is currently housing asylum seekers.  Appalled though I am that such an extremist group exists on our doorstep virtually, I am genuinely warmed by the response of the public.  Down with the fascists!

Every now and then you here a story that makes you think maybe, just maybe, the human race does have redeeming characteristics. Whilst it is appalling such a group would form and I can only assume they planned to attack the asylum seekers based on how you described them that people are willing to stand against such actions fills me with hope for the future.

Started 'Arrow' marathon, It's okay though it'll make you cringe for cliche scenes and stuff. But hey on the second thought every movie and tv series are cliche these days.

Can't get into Arrow. I suspect it's my bias against DC Comics. I know it's a fairly radical departure from the source material but the show just never grabbed me. Meanwhile I'm gritting me teeth through an hour of Peter Capaldi butchering his role as "The Doctor" in Doctor Who. There have only been 2 actors whose performance as the quirky time lord I haven't enjoyed. Capaldi is one and Colin Baker is the other. Hopefully Capaldi's tenure will be equally short-lived.

I'm always amazed that such a proportion of European publics are so vehemently averse to asylum seekers. There's some anti-immigrant sentiment in the US but almost all of what I've heard is about illegal immigrants and a lot of the time (in New Mexico at least) it comes from Mexican-Americans. Disliking freeloaders I can understand, but asylum seekers aren't so much seeking to cynically exploit the system as they are trying to not die and asking the government to evaluate their claims to being in immediate danger of death before deciding whether or not the sword of Damocles is of the appropriate size and shape to permit approval.

Then again I've got a nagging suspicion most of the mob members are on the dole themselves, which is how they had the time and incentive to form a mob. They won't think of asylum seekers as a drain on the system so much as competition in the race to drain the system.

I could well be getting a lot wrong here, but these are my general and preliminary impressions. In any case, good on your public for stopping a mob.

The Establishment hugging media use the asylum seekers as a great distraction to the real social ills of the country.

"Yeah, all those NHS waiting times and A&E closures, along with slower train times and increased gas and electricity prices are all down to asylum seekers!" is the gist of most headlines from the Daily Mail et al!

Bad as that mob was it's got nothing on the Australian government. "Seeking Asylum? Come to Australia where you will be treated like a criminal regardless of your age or gender simply for wanting to escape persecution. That is if we don't intercept and sink your boats in international waters." If that's not bad enough the Australian Border Force act swears all "detention facility" employees to secrecy. Yep it's now a criminal offence punishable by up to fifteen years imprisonment for someone working at one of those facilities in any capacity to talk about possible physical or emotional abuse, mental health issues, general wellbeing, or the conditions in which asylum seekers are being housed. Now why would our government need to do something like that I wonder...

I often say Australia is the greatest nation on Earth and for the most part we are. Sadly we are let down in a few key areas which forces me to reconsider my position.

Due to moving to my new house, the last couple of days have been quite hectic. Now however, everything apart from some minor issues has been sorted out and I can finally catch my breath.

On another note, I'm picking up my new bow on Friday and my rosin could arrive in the mail any day now. It's taken too long for my gear to be complete, but I'm almost there now...

Best of luck in your new place Midi.

On my mind? The pain and swelling in my right knee. No clue what I did to it yet but since late yesterday afternoon it's been giving me trouble. Went to the track and trained in spite of this and when I was going hard things weren't too bad. Lower speed though was a big problem. It's the medial side of the knee which is really the only encouraging news. If I have somehow damaged the medial ligament it's only a 6-8 week injury and I'll still be able to turn the legs over starting early in the rehab. Of course it could also be a tight ITB pulling the knee out of place which would also be relatively short term. Either way though these constant interruptions to my training are wearing me down as much mentally as anything else.

Yes, that is my AS-level chemistry exam. Although I did manage to pass... by 0.6% (technically an E is a pass at A-level).

So as promised that radio show. I may have an opportunity to come on as co-host of a metal, punk, and alternative community radio show. I'll find out more Wednesday but I'm pretty interested. Admittedly my knowledge is somewhat lacking compared with BAN, FA, Macabre, and Midi but I still believe I have a good deal to offer.

Well that's handy. Guess who just found a new source to check for upcoming metal gigs in his hometown? Got a full breakdown of everything from the next gig (Behemoth w/ Watain 2nd October) to the latest confirmed gig (Iron Maiden in May) unfortunately there's nothing I want to see. Not even Black Sabbath on their farewell tour because I hear Ozzy's voice is pretty much gone these days.

I meant to mention that my MP got back to me about my query about mortality rates for those with benefits withdrawn by our Government, saying she was actively pursuing their publication. Today she has got back to me again with a copy of a letter from the Department for Work & Pensions confirming the publication of these rates. I am impressed with her. • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
