What's on your mind?

We had a scare this morning at breakfast - realized one of our cats wasn't simply hiding under the furniture, that she'd actually gotten out the door, which must have happened last night. I was very worried about her; my wife was totally distraught. Thankfully I heard her yowling near the door this afternoon and got her inside. I was just about to go flyer the neighborhood. It sounds like a little thing, but we're still getting over it.

Yeah it's a massive stress when they go missing. So good she's back though.

Ours went missing for 4 weeks last year. We lived opposite massive parklands and he had gotten used to sleeping there overnight quite frequently. But 4 weeks was a bit of a stretch.....he eventfully came home after I'd visited every Vet Clinic, animal shelter and Local Pound in the area.

Don't think he got off our bed for 3 days after that lol. Ate us out of everything we had....

Ours has been super hungry too. She's a ten-year-old indoor cat and this is a totally new environment for all of us. I'm just happy she didn't eat one of the dead poisoned mice I've seen outside, or get run over or something, we're right next to a street and several parking lots. My wife was sobbing uncontrollably, and I could tell she was furious with me as well - I'd opened the door while I was using our grill pan last night, to let the smoke out. That's when the cat must have decided to go exploring. Four weeks, man, I can't even imagine.

Now see if you had a large dog...

Seriously though I'm glad the cat is fine.

I love dogs. No way do we have the time/energy/space/money to raise a dog right now, though, and honestly, if we'd had a dog get away from us here, it would have probably ended up either getting hit by a car or getting captured by animal control. Thanks though, I'm happy our cat is back. I'm happy the other cat pulled through her surgery and seems to be her old self. Hopefully we have at least a few years left with all of them. They're part of the family, you know?

Thank the lord you found her, it's awful when pets go missing. Get well soon Relentless. And like Nataaja7 said, pretty much anything goes in this thread (in line with forum rules). Has anyone got any helpful hints or tips about uni? I'm starting to feel a little trepidation.

Don't panic and stress too much, make the most of it, it's a great opportunity and enjoyyy :)

One of the most laid back educational experiences of my life.  Met some great people from varied backgrounds and culture (and only killed a handful of them - I was much more restrained in my youth).  I am probably not the best example to speak to because I actually quit after 6 months as I got in the habit of spending my days in Manchester instead of actually at University so got behind with work plus I hadn't chosen the most invigorating course.  In hindsight I should have gone into residence at the faculty and forced myself to be more of a grown up.

Other than that?  What Natassja said.

Uni is an awesome place because nobody fking knows you. You can do whatever you want...I mean, you can like shave your head and grow a goatee and people will meet you and (probably) like you (if you're a normal person :P), while the ones that already knew you will think you went off your mind. You can even change your habits.

In highschool I spent most of my days behind the PC playing games. But ever since I'm in the uni, I try to go out as much as possible (because I also started hanging out more with non-highschool friends besides the ones I met at uni).

My $0.02 worth about University:

1. Learn to plan your workload and be disciplined with your time. You'll have 2-3 major essays due on the same date, plan ahead.

2. Day 1 - Class 1: go through your Subject Guide and determine what the assessment criteria are. You'll likely end up with at least one major group project & presentation. Chose your group wisely and quickly or you'll be lumped in with people who won't do the work and you'll be left doing it - for everyone.

3. Get to know your lecturer asap.

4. Don't fall into the trap of falling behind. It's easy not to turn up to lectures & tutorials because frankly, unlike high-school no one cares if you turn up or not.

5. It's up to YOU to understand the course content, assessment criteria & dates etc. you won't be spoon-fed anything. It's a huge level up in responsibility Uni, many struggle with it. But that's what life is really about (high school is NOT reality), so understand Uni teaches you more than just Microeconomics 101.

6. Enjoy it........Once you're working full-time and looking after yourself + family, you will understand.

That's me done......

Had an odd virus/bug this week that hasn't really moved beyond mildly irritating my sinuses yet has made my tired very easily.  Starting to get frustrating now as have to finish boarding the roof on my Dad's shed on Saturday morning and would like to feel fresh and up for it to get it done.  Also it has made ears really irritated this week too.

Also, watched "Until The Light Takes Us" documentary earlier (all the way through for the first time as only caught snippets until now) and as well as confirming what an absolute penis Varg Vikernes is (with Frost a close second) I also found myself really irritated by the film maker/interviewer.  I suppose the raw editing job was meant to fit with the general aesthetic of the subject matter but still looked like something I put together in the edit suite at college as a teenager.

Well I'm taking a huge step forward in my development as a guitar player now. Begun thinking about, and more importantly working on, the process of changing a song to cover it in my own way. The song? 'Paint It Black' by the Rolling Stones. So far the changes are: 1. playing it in C# rather then E standard, 2. distortion (of course), 3. playing it much, much slower. There are a couple other things I've done but that's for me to know :)

Short term it will be a guitar cover only. Down the road I aim to play it as a full band cover probably with harsh vox. I want to have a band up and going by this time next year so I'll be putting much more work into covers with my sound in mind. C# has proved very productive already (playing in that @ my guitar place).

Okay, now I'm seriously pissed off. I've just come off the phone to the university and I'm not allowed to bring any of my archery, knife throwing or Iaido equipment, despite the fact I have years of experience and the qualifications and licenses to back it up for all of them. Not to mention that it is all kept under lock and key.

I'm tempted to stick a load of "we don't talk about band camp" stickers on my archery box and if anyone asks it's a trombone.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
