I tried their 'Hel & Verdoemenis' at the Great British Beer Festival in London last year' date=' and absolutely loved it. I've since found their website and ordered some of their other beers, all of which have also been outstanding. The next one is their spiced imperial stout. Fuck it, it's sunny outside, I've just got over my cold and have my taste back. Think I'll sit in the garden with a brew in a bit! :D[/quote'] I've never tasted it, so I think I'm gonna try it. I think you know even more about beer from the Netherlands then I do

Heh, cool. I will look for Hertog Jan. Sorry, I should have been specific, I'm interested in craft beers. I'll see if I can get my hands on some De Molen, too, it sounds familiar - there are a couple of great places here that specialize in the harder-to-find beers.
Oh, I'm sorry :D Actually, I do not know many crafted beers from here. But you may like La Trappe, which is trappistbeer.

I don't know much about the technical side of things, but in my 2 year relationship with craft beer, I've drank hundreds of the fuckers! I'm actually going to Belgium on holiday in August where I plan on pretty much drinking my own weight in beer. Try as many types as possible. :D What types of beer are you generally into? If you're open to the really heavy dark high abv ones, you should definitely give some of De Molen a try. There's another brewery from Amsterdam called Le Trappe. They have some really good beers. They're very Belgian-tasting and are put into the 'dubbel', 'tripel', 'quadrupel' varieties.

Haha, Belgium is the best country for doing that :D Which towns are you planning to visit also? :) And myself, I don't know really much about beer yet, since I'm only 19 yet. But the one I really like, Hertog Jan Karakter, is dark one and a bit heavier. I have to explore much more in the world of beer yet :D

@Yobo Definitely man. Belgium is my number 1 place for beer, but the Netherlands and USA are just behind! I can't recall everywhere we're going, but we're definitely staying in Bruges and Ypres for some of the time. Gonna be awesome! :D Haha, that's funny. I'm only 19 myself! I guess I'm just weird. What's the drinking age for the Netherlands, out of interest? I'll look out for Hertog Jan Karakter then. Might I be able to pick it up in Belgium? Definitely try De Molen if you can handle the strength and heaviness. You won't regret it. :)

Bruges is really beautiful, you'll love it! I've also been to Ypres, but that was I bit longer ago, so I don't remember it really good anymore. Also, try to visit Ghent. It's definitely my favorite city in Belgium. It's old and there is even a castle in the city centre :D Anvers is also a nice place to go, but huger than the other cities. But if you go to Anvers one day, I can see if I can come to there :) The drinking age was 16 here, but they changed it 18. But me dad didn't allow me to drink before I was 18. And I believe he is still not a big fan of me drinking...Anyways, I think it's really hard to pick up dutch beer in Belgium, since they think they make better beer than us :P

Saving all the info... One day I'll travel to Europe. I've always wanted to.
I'd be happy to go to the Netherlands for a gig, it's got a lot of interesting stuff and it's small enough I could traverse the entire country by pogo stick.

Shit, how did I forget? We're visiting Ghent as well! :D Awesome. I'll find out if we're going to Anvers as well. Would be great to meet some of the folks from here in person one day, given I speak to you guys like every day. :) That's a shame. I'll still look out for it, though. The Belgians sure do take their beer seriously. :P You're lucky with De Molen being so close to you, though. If I had such an incredible brewery local to me, I'd never be sober again!

There is even a venue that is focussing on progrock/metal. And indeed, the longest travel you will have with the train is only four hours (from north to south).

Yeah, I know there's ProgPower Europe each year in Baarlo, that sounds cool. Even aside from that there are plenty of large urban areas, which means more gigs.

Yay for Ghent! :D And let me know, hopefully I'll be able to come :) And yeah, there is a sort of rivalry between us. Belgians make mostly jokes about us, but we also make fun of them :P And I've looked where their brewery is, I can visit their brewery every day, since it's not far from where I travel every day by train :D

However, I am the first two weeks of august in Denmark, so hopefully there is a chance that you can visit Anvers the last two weeks of august :) And I'll see it's available somewhere in the store here, otherwise I'll visit the brewery :D

Re: What's on your mind?

So, I finished up a first draft of the Satan's Delivery Service lyrics or whatever the hell they are: 18 Wheels As day dawns I wake up prepared Knowing ye auspiciousness ov another day I leave my castle Wife and hounds behind For today is ye day I earn my keep I traverse ye empty plains And frosted heights Neither rain nor sleet nor snow nor hail Can stop ye goods I bring Barreling breakneck across ye asphalt plains The miles whip by easily I shalt bear ye travails of distance As ye appointed courier (Chorus) Ye flames of perdition fire my heart! Sally forth, cursing that which wouldst allay me! Astride this iron mastodon 18 wheels ov determination In ye depths ov night Caught in ye automotive morass Slothful progress numbs my mind But ye thought ov medium-rare steaks Drives me on Sizzling beef awaits me ‘pon my return! I take a draught from ye barrel Warmth of spirits fills me The scent ov hops ‘pon my breath A sign of my courage to strive on! 2 hours and miles left to go It is but naught to me Smokestacks belching Black clouds skywards Rubber claws at ye tar This chrome-plated steed roars eagerly Onwards! Unto ye client!
Sounds like a black metal country song. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
