What's on your mind?

Win8' date=' ugh. I know at some point I'll be forced to upgrade to 7, but I plan to skip 8 entirely. If I wasn't such a committed Windows user in terms of hardware compatibility, I'd probably switch to Linux at that point.[/quote'] My dad would probably have done the same thing, we've tried Linux occasionally but it doesn't work all that well for us. My school's computers run Windows 7 and it's OK, some of the features are nice.

I am in Italy. I am tired. And I want to go back home.
That's funny, I did actually get more homesick when I went to university near my parents than now. Maybe that's because it was my first year, and maybe it was because UNM students are feckless numbskulls...either way, I'm glad I got the grades I did.

Well ooops! I read that wrong lol That sucks :( I'm sure they miss you too! So when do you get to go back again?
Around my birthday, the binging of April.

I can go home if I really want to, my bf comes to visit me every other weekend, and the weekends he's not coming, I go to see him, so I can complain, the situation is pretty good. The thing is that now I live with two girls that are complete strangers, I don't really hang out with the people at the university, so if I'm not there I am at home, alone. And usually when springs come I get even lonelier because I miss being able to go out for coffee or talk to someone face to face and not on skype :D plus, I never really learned to like the Italian youth and their way of doing things.

Alabaster what are your thoughts of 9 string guitars
I don't have any use for a 9-string, personally, and I think they're a dumb fad. I'm sure there are people out there who feel inspired by all those strings, but I played a friend's 8-string and didn't really get much out of the experience. I could see playing a 7-string, for the extra high string, but it really only gets you an extra fourth in range. A lot of my riffs use open top strings and having anything else up there would just complicate matters. I'm ok with a baritone 6.

Sounds a bit like my situation, although I life still with my parents. But somehow I can't get along with the other students. The most of them are kind though, but I wouldn't call them friends. And although I still life were I grew up, everyone changed or moved to an other city, which really sucks. The only thing I have here, is table tennis, although there isn't a single person with the same age as me. But I like playing competition together with a guy from 50 and a younger person who is 15. Giving training to children (from 10-14 years old) every monday is also nice, but still...I really miss persons to hang out with. I had my girlfriend who I saw most of the weekends, but that's also gone. And my friends, friends... I haven't many of them. A guy who is 39 who lives in Belgium and a friend from my former school (who lives now in Groningen, 300 km away from here and doesn't come here often) are my best friends.

I know how you feel, but at least I can go home and hang out with my friends. I don't know, maybe if you try going out sometimes with people from your university, you'll meet somebody new. I personally never even tried to make friends in Italy, I don't go anywhere here, I don't like how they function. When we go out, we sit in a park, get drunk and go dancing in a disco. They get all fancy, go to bars, drink cocktails and go home. For me, that is expensive and not interesting. But since I had the opportunity to go home for the weekends, that wasn't a big problem.

I don't mind going out and have drink with some people and talking and having fun with each other. But that's just what I like, and most of the people here don't (for whatever reason). Going out here "means" getting drunk, getting laid, get stoned, listen to crappy music, etc. I hate that and mostly I can't even stand people who are doing that. You are lucky you can get home every weekend and see your friends, famlily, bf, etc. But I life at home and there is just nothing to do here. And the weekends are the same for me. Being all day alone if there isn't youth competition with table tennis. I just hate it more and more.

Are you going out on the tandem' date=' or stuck on your trainer?[/quote'] Mostly on the trainer until my brother is medically cleared to get back on the bike. With a little clever planning I was able to get out on the road Saturday and Sunday with different pilots. On my mind: I never bought all these motivational speakers and the crap they spewed but damn this video I was sent has some real inspirational shit in it which are particularly relevant to cycling.

Wow, you really hit the nail on the head here. This is exactly what I think of Georgetown night life.

Only first year yet, so at least three more to go. So time enough to meet new people I hope

Well then in that case let me tell you that I only really made one friend in my first year. Then I transferred and had to start over again with regards to the social front. There's still time for you to find interests at college. Of course, I'm not exactly speaking from a tower of experience, but things got better for me.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
