What's on your mind?

I have never had the noble snoek. I do a mean battered fried sole' date=' though. What's snoek like, a white fish?[/quote'] I have no idea. It has a stronger flavor than salmon, not just saltier, but richer in a sense. Maybe if BAN ate one he could describe it properly. ...buggering hell, I'm hungry. I suppose these carrots will have to do.

Yes it's a white fish and it is delicious (we get it down here as well). I like Snapper, trouble with Snapper though is you don't want them too big or they lose a lot of their flavour. They can be a big fish too my grandparents have a photo of some they caught years back which were the size of their dinner table widthways. Tasmanian Salmon is pretty awesome as well.

Re: What's on your mind?

Ah, it's great being able to do it at home. What kind of setup do you have, computer-based or otherwise? If you have a way of sending me wav files, I can do a mix for you. I find that I absolutely HAVE to warm up properly now before I play or sing. If I don't, I push too much without being ready, and blow my voice out, or get really crappy tendon pain in my elbow, whichever applies. Especially with recording, since you wind up going over things a few times to get it right, it's important to have that endurance. How's the drummer? Is he the guy from Burn Your World? I feel like KSMASH mentioned something about that... Anyway, seriously, I look forward to hearing it.
We set up a couple of mics for the drums, Edgar (lead guitars and vox) has Cubase and an input, and we used Ksmash's mixer for the other inputs. We're micing the amps, as direct connection gives a really weak guitar tone. Edgar will probably mix it too, but I appreciate the offer, if he can't get it to sound good, we may take you up on it. I think I was just having an off night. I warmed up playing along with the drummer to give him visual cues for one of the longer songs, I just couldn't play worth a shit. I still had tons of force on vocals, I was just too frustrated to concentrate at the time. Hopefully it will come together next week, and we'll have a demo to share with you dudes. And yes, Evan of Burn Your World is our drummer, and he is awesome. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Re: What's on your mind?

I second this. Most fish to me is nasty. If it smells like fish, it ain't good. I will however eat fish that is so fresh it has no smell, like sashimi, raw, caught the very same day.
Yes, canned tuna, like most things out of a can, tastes awful. I prefer my tuna with fresh sushi/sashimi, or seared as a tuna steak, delicious. My favorite fish (mostly for sushi/sashimi purposes) is Yellowtail, with Escolar as a close second. Tuna and Salmon (along with variants like albacore) round out my top fish spots, but I did once have sushi with Blue Marlin, which was dynamite. I love all kinds of seafood though, mussels, scallops, lobster, fish, crab (hard and soft shell), oysters, clams, squid, etc... Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

I hardly eat seafood. I hate fish. I like calamari, prawns and tuna (from the can) but nothing else. I remember when i was little i ate fish but then my brother told me that i ate a bone so i havent eaten any since then. Even though i now know that i didnt eat the bone, i'm not used to the taste of fish anymore so i dont eat it.

Me and my dad go fishing at least once a month, we used to go once a week when I was younger for every weekend. I loved cooking all the fish with him and eating it, I grew up with the taste and loved it. Dad cooks everything with fish in it, he makes fish curry's and heaps of other stuff, my dad even eats the eyes, something I don't do haha Sent from my GT-I9100T using Tapatalk

Fishing is all about knowing the good spots and what bait to use. Then being really patient. Best haul I've had fishing with grandad was 7 snoek, 3 tommy ruff, 2 garfish 1 yellowfin whiting, 15 crabs and a Port Jackson Shark (aka Dog shark) which somehow made it's way into the crab nets

Cool, his playing sounded really good on the BYW recordings I heard. Miking up the amps is definitely the way to go. I've heard some good tones out of modelers but none of them are natural enough for me, though they've come a long way since I bought my line6 Flextone head 12 years ago. I'm sure you guys will get a good sound, I just thought I'd offer. Good luck finishing it up. I hope you're having fun with it. Have a name yet? Oh, Obesitor and Æpefæce might be having an Anus Ov Ye Göatlord jam session this weekend... :D

Still no name. Nobody seems to have refuted the latest suggestion, but I don't think any of us are crazy about it either. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

No, fishing is all about drinking beer and enjoying nature, catching fish is secondary. Same goes for hunting, as long as I can explore outside and then get drunk at camp, I'm good to go. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Couple of silly wickets but I'll take 2/100 in the first session thanks England :D Sticking with the sporting theme moving on to AFL God I love the Adelaide media. "Port Adelaide lose 8 million dollars, cross town rival Adelaide lose 500,000". Yeah, um, no not true at all. What the paper got right was that both clubs lost money, but Adelaide did not lose 500,000 they lost 1.89 million. Port Adelaide did not lose 8 million they lost 1.21 million.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
