What Are You Listening To?

Sepultura "Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation" - raw and cumbersome as these are the energy evident on them is really invigorating and uplifting.  Igor is a fucking beast even though it sounds like he is playing on bean tins. Thinking of bands who made a consistent growth (not sure if "improvement" fits in this instance) from their debut releases and went on to release a good run of albums and Sepultura are up there up to and including "Arise".  I have a soft spot for bits of "Chaos A.D." if the truth be told but it's a far cry from what comes before it.  "Roots" can fuck off though.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - King

What a world we live in that average joes like you and I can access such majesty with our sullied proletariat fingers.

When the revolution comes, symphonic death metal will be in the tears of the oppressed acting as a soundtrack to the realisation of the collective conscience!

I love the chanting. I don't get the amount of absolute worship that album is showered with - aside from the chanting, it strikes me as pretty standard stuff - but it's really enjoyable nonetheless.

NP: Obed Marsh - Innsmouth  ...filthy doom, pounding riffs and some eerie melodies, might appeal to Macabre?

Yes, sorry to say I find it a lot of nonsense really.  I admire the approach but the delivery just doesn't cut it and I just got bored.

I'm not entirely sure what I think of it yet, will have to go through it again; I'm a little surprised it didn't appeal to you, though, it didn't sound any less focused than that Ruinous album on my first listen.

I just discovered the album yesterday, it´s somewhat interesting and i don´t know that many bands from russia. What i usually look for an album is the atmosphere basically, it was certainly worth a listen. Propably won´t be on my playlist too often, maybe only when they release something new i´ll have another look.

Thing with Ruinous was that they weren't trying to be anything other than straight up DM done without frills, I don't think the lack of focus is by accident and is most of the appeal for me.  That Blood Incantation seemed to be hinting at some progressive technicality that wasn't actually there when I looked under the frock. I was expecting a meat and two veg but got some lentils in broth instead!

Huh, ok. I'm not in love with the Blood Incantation album by any means; if anything it sounded like your sort of thing more than mine. I like a lot of the riffs, but I don't think the songwriting is all the way there. That Ruinous album ended up being a letdown for me after my excitement at the promo tracks, though, I have yet to be able to get through the whole thing. Frustrating because I should like it, on paper. Maybe I'll warm up to it?

Speaking of -

Rotting Christ - Sleep of the Angels.

I love this album as it's during their gothic metal phase. They even went to Germany to record at Woodhouse studios where Sentenced, The Gathering and Theatre of Tragedy recorded. So it's got that great crisp late 90s production you can only get from Woodhouse. Love it.

Also, as a point of interest, my CD copy of 'Sleep of the Angels' comes with a compilation CD called 'Darkness We Feel Volume II' that actually has the tracklisting IN THE ROTTING CHRIST BOOKLET! It's stapled in there in the middle pages. Really unusual and I think this is the only time I can recall this happening in my near thousand CD collection.

Scald would be my fav Russian band despite only making 1 album due to the tragic death of their singer.

The most glorious epic doom you'd want to hear. Track 1 'Night Sky". YouTube it.....the voice, the riffs, the mood....the build up to the solo and onward to the end......breathtaking...

Have you guys heard 'Who Dies in Siberian Slush'? Amazing Russian band. Also one of the best band names ever.

This song kills me.

Musically something i would easily enjoy, but theres something in the production, guitar tones especially that make it extremely difficult to listen to. Tried the remastered version but wasn´t much better.. Shame about the short lived life of the band, seems like they could have done some absolutely amazing things if survived.

That was an awesome share, enjoyed it. :D

Now Playing:

My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light.

Their last true classic album. Bit of a worry it was 12 years ago. What an album though.

The last one I really loved was "The Dreadful Hours", but I've come around to "A Map Of All Our Failures" and I do like the latest one... Those not as much to your liking?

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
