Re: The Movie Thread

Actually the cheesy' date=' funny ones are the only ones I get into. Some old horror is good in its way. But as a general rule I don't like horror films, and I don't seek them out. I'm a Dead Alive, Shaun Of The Dead, Evil Dead 2 kind of horror fan.[/quote'] I love horror movies (hugely prefer the old school stuff), but those are some great choices too. Have you ever seen Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil? That one is another favorite of mine in that horror spoof genre, it's hilarious. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

It really is excellent' date=' if you can cope with the subtitles! :D[/quote'] Of course I can, I don't have the privilege of having world famous movies made in my mother tongue :P The Killing also has an American version and it's pretty good. The series is a bit slow, the story lasts 26 days and each day is an episode, but it gets you hooked on. I didn't know there was also an English adaptation of The Bridge :D

Realistic portrayals of human cruelty and suffering are repulsive to me. I can't deal with them. I can take it in painting and music' date=' but the movies do nothing but make me feel sad and disgusted.[/quote'] That's my dad's view a lot of the time. The intent behind the violence seems to be what affects him, much more than the actual violence itself. I get affected by both. Still, sometimes it's great to see. The shovel-kill in Blood Diamond sticks out as a scene that was unsettling - but its visceral nature helped it in a sense.

I never bother to see the American version because the original was so good I didn't want to spoil it :D I'm off to watch The Conjuring now :D
yeah, don't bother seeing it, the original is awesome. Just like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the original Swedish version was so awesome but the remake was rubbish. Excellent, i really enjoyed the Conjuring. It was fun.

The originals are pretty much always better. The only remake I can recall to surpass the original was John Carpenter's remake of The Thing, which gets my vote as one of the best horror movies ever. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Done with The Conjuring. Finally a decent horror! The remake of The Omen was ok, they didn't massively fucked it up, but I still prefer the original. I didn't like that the kid in the remake looked like Satan, the kid in the original was cute and had big blue eyes and that made it scarier, the fact that something so cute and so innocent can be a demon. I want to see the remake of Carrie because, as I've seen in the trailer, it follows the book more than the original. Oh, and I hate what Rob Zombie has done to Halloween. The remake is complete garbage. The point of the movie was that Michael Meyers was a just kid from a normal family who went crazy one day. The story in the remake, where he lives in a highly dysfunctional family, kills it. It's just not the same movie.

So I watched Hesher, finally. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role as a psychopathic / chaotic metalhead was an amazing performance. I really loved Natalie Portman too, she is one of my favorite actresses of all time. Overall it's a really difficult-to-watch movie. It's really sad and depressing and almost feels pointless. I would have liked to hear better metal, I felt the Motorhead was a bit cliche. And I had some weird feels about how people might mis-perceive metal heads if they watched this. Overall, I'm mixed. I liked and disliked it. It was really strange, chaotic maybe to a fault, and beautiful in some parts. Hesher (2010) - IMDb

I really liked Hesher, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was great because you loved him at times and hated him at others. He starts out selfish, but the grandma really changes him and helps him push the family back together. The supporting actors were great, but it was all about Hesher, as he was pretty much just a catalyst throughout the whole movie. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Still, sometimes it's great to see. The shovel-kill in Blood Diamond sticks out as a scene that was unsettling - but its visceral nature helped it in a sense.[/quote'] Yeah, his view makes sense to me. I like plenty of action and martial arts movies. Like I said to JBaker, it's torture and captivity, rape, and senseless death that I have a hard time watching. I'm more sensitive to it now that I'm a parent, as well. A good example of unsettling and horrific violence that actually served an artistic purpose, in my opinion, is the portrayal of rape, murder and revenge in The Virgin Spring, because the rest of the movie was so stylized. The tension between the fairytale quality of most of the movie and the graphic and emotional violence called to mind the way that real-life trauma has of stripping away layers of ordinary concerns. The violence had the effect of making me think of normal social interaction as a fairytale, an artificial construct hiding something very brutal, unnecessary but unavoidable. And it wasn't pretty, or glorified; there wasn't any sympathy for the father's act of revenge. I don't know what you'd think of the movie. The final scene, where the father prays with his family, and the spring appears, seemed meaningless to me, and that may have been the point of it. I also think part of this may have been in the acting. It seemed to leave a lot of room for interpretation, maybe one of the things I found so striking.

[/quote'] As I say, I've seen more than my fair share of bloody horror films over the years, and I've yet to see any I legitimately feel are 'glorifying' violence; not even amongst the so-called 'torture porn' genre.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
