I've only ever used Ernie Ball strings, but I've been happy with them. Beefy Slinky is my preferred style, a nice heavier gauge for down-tuning and good resonance. They may not be great in the scope of things, but I really don't know any different. I don't know much of anything about gear.

No drums at practice today, but it was still productive. Our bass player is getting into the rhythm of what we're doing, and we got some vocal issues worked out with the first song, so I think the track one is pretty well done. I tried out my lyrics for the second song today, and I liked the way they fit, I just need to finish them. It's encouraging to be moving forward, to say the least.

I have to agree with some of these points and disagree on others. While nu-metal does have varying degrees of metal influence as you pointed out, I have yet to hear a band in which it is a majority of the sound. As such, I think it's fair to say that it's a metal influenced genre of rock music (like crust punk or stoner rock), but not a metal genre. While I don't like any nu-metal bands, I will agree that your enjoyment of any kind of music shouldn't be contingent upon its genre.

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from Ecthelion in Who are your current top 5 bands?
Because there is very little metal in their sounds. The songs are written in pop/rock structures with the rhythm/cadence of their vocal and guitar and vocal lines derived from hip-hop. About the only part culled from metal is the superficial "aggression" they display and a heavier guitar tone than you would usually hear in pop/rock.

Pretty good list, it's been a while since I've spun The Haunted.

You're right, things are constantly mislabeled. "Nu-metal" was a marketing term created by mainstream music journalists to describe a new sound. The problem is that they, like most people, weren't familiar with what metal was, and only associated it with a few of its superficial characteristics.

    Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum

Even the demos here are great. They're kind of like a classy ode to Hell Awaits and Pleasure to Kill with Martin Van Drunen sounding a lot more like Ventor of Kreator than his more signature sickening tone. Even early on though, they were trying to push that sound forward, and they did with the full length. It hinted at what was to come with a few death metal moments coming through and that classic Pestilence sound coming out, and it also thrashes really fucking hard.

He was a good fit in that he was decent and kept to himself enough not to disturb the excellent music that the band was cranking out, but I would never call Greely a good vocalist. Capable, I guess, and a vast improvement over his predecessor, but not particularly good. I've always thought Barlow was a shitty vocalist too though, he tries way too hard and his tone sucks. I can ignore him well enough on Burnt Offerings, but he's part of what drags Dark Saga and Something Wicked down for me. He seemed a bit more competent by the time of Horror Show, but they had stepped up their songwriting at that point too. I think Owens gets an unfair shake, he's a pretty damn good vocalist and the best the band ever had IMO, but I think he gets shit on because the fans wanted the classic vocalist and we're put off by the patriotic themes on The Glorious Burden. I totally get it, I'm not crazy about them either, but the bands conviction is palpable and it features some of their best performances. I remember buying it as my first Iced Earth album and not really digging it because of all of the ballads, but recent listens have reminded me that that are some real ragers on there, and the ballads have grown on me. It also features one of their best big epic closers, so it ranks pretty highly for me among their discography.

The first song very much falls in line with what I'm talking about. This "song" sounds like nothing more than a vehicle in which to house the guitar solo. It was admittedly a good solo, but wading through the dull riffs and silly vocal lines to get to it was taxing. The second song was similar, but had a decent intro riff and some better vocal lines that almost would have made a better song if they had put more focus on those elements and less on the solos. Either way, I'm not hearing anything power metal here. It sounds more like glam with neoclassical shredding to me ears.

Wow, that was actually a decent song! Color me surprised to hear a speed metal riff and some good vocal lines. I guess that makes one in a row...

Must be pretty similar, looks just like the Turkish variety, and I believe they're neighboring countries. If it is the same, it's fucking delicious, so good on you. I'm being sad that all of mine is gone, and that I no longer have a connection to that side of the world anymore...

Yes, it's fucking awesome. Martin doesn't sound quite as vicious as he does on Consuming Impulse, but his punctuated vocal lines fit perfectly with the frantic thrashing. Really impressive stuff.

    Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum

Holy balls, why did I not buy this until now? Like Darkthrone and Bathory, it seems that Pestilence were masters of two styles (thrash and death in this case), and I may end up liking this even more than Consuming Impulse. There's also a solid chance that my thrash top 10 will have to be amended to include this raging beast...

Good intel, I'll check it out. My friend Erik has been indirectly subsidizing my online purchases, so I've gone a little nuts lately, but I'm not complaining. I was planning on doing a Crucial Blast order next and then a Dark Descent order, but those might have to wait now...
