Re: The Rant

Seems like the proper place to vent my frustrations. So, nowadays it seems, in the world of the internet (barring this place for the most part), if you like bands like Burzum, you're a neo-nazi hipster who only likes the band to look cool, and if you like newer bands like Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne Room, Nachtmystium, Alcest etc. etc. you're only into the "image" of black metal, and you must have no appreciation for the older bands that are "actually good". I love Emperor, Immortal, Darkthrone, Ulver (all eras by the way, not just Bergtatt), and lots of other Scandinavian bands, but I also like newer stuff like the aforementioned bands. Why? Because the music sounds good. I enjoy it. This does not make me a hipster. I like Burzum. Why? Because the music sounds good. That does not make me a hipster either. What is with all these people condemning newer acts? And it's not just in black metal. Baroness makes solid stuff, but I read all kinds of shit about them on the net. Why are people so threatened by these "legions of evil hipster kvlt bands"?
Unfortunately, this label exists because many hipsters worship Burzum and newer bands like WiiTR, Alcest, Agalloch, etc... Doing so does not make you a hipster, it just means that stuff is popular with hipsters too. I'm fine with new black metal too, even the shoegazy post black metal stuff many bands are doing is okay in my book, I'm just not big on stuff like Deafhaven and Liturgy that take a few black metal techniques and mix it other hipster friendly music and label other bands still taking the traditional route as posers for not experimenting more. Even then, it does come down to the music, and I wouldn't fault their stance so much of their music wasn't so pedestrian and boring. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

^^^agreed' date=' sick to death of it and its worse not even being British and still having people going crazy over it. Seriously who fucking cares[/quote'] The US, I imagine. Many here have an odd fascination with monarchical fancy-pants individuals. But honestly, I feel sorry for the baby. It'll grow up being vehemently hated by a large proportion of the Commonwealth merely by fact of its being born. Those who are born weak ought to be protected - which is why we have a government. Those who make themselves weak can go to the wolves. I'm also pretty sad that the modern desirable archetype for men, at least on my campus, is of a weak, simpering, brainless sperm bag - a necessary evil to perpetuate the species. Apparently anything else (i.e. the presence of a spine of some description) is offensive to current PC notions of gender norms.

My rant is not that I have to get stuff to tweek the guitar I just got but rather the stuff I need is out of stock at the moment and I'll be waiting until October at the soonest. Now do I get it set up and hope I don't need some of the items in question? or do I just wait and let my new purchase rot since it's not up to my specs yet?

I'd give the guitar a go, if you think it needs to be improved afterwards you can do that or maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. Speaking of which I still need to get around to putting EMG pickups on my Dean Razorback. Consequently I haven't played it in about six months (good thing I had the Dean ML or Gibson Les Paul to choose from in the meantime)

It sounds great but I need to replace the active EMG 81 with a Demarzo, I need to get a kill switch and push/pull switch installed and I need to get it set up for 'B' tuning. After that I may also need a Fender Hipshot and/or Sachaller locking tuners. That's the kinda stuff I'm doing to it. Plus I'm going to get a Tube Screamer!

They're great if you want clean, precise, plastic tone with no balls. They're great if you like toothless soulless clarity that sucks all the life out of any guitar you put them in. They're great for a career in smooth jazz. Fuck EMGs. Real guitarists use real pickups to drive real amps. Real pickups don't need batteries. [/rant] What guitar is it? I bet you could adjust the intonation yourself and at least start using it. As far as the Tube Screamer goes, having used and owned a few overdrives - get the Maxon OD-9 (the green one). It's like the Ibanez pedal but way better. It giveth rather than taketh away. Put them side by side and I bet you'll hear it too.

What amp are you using? My personal favorite pickups, depending on the guitar, are my Bareknuckle Cold Sweat, the Gibson 498 (came stock in my Explorer but I transferred it to the Steinberger), and the Seymour Duncan Invader, which is a little hot for some amps but sounds tough as nails. I've tried even higher-output passive pickups but they overload my amp and offer neither clarity nor volume (counterintuitive, I know). The only place I like active pickups is in a bass, for recording. I still have my EMGs laying around somewhere, but I will never use them. If you weren't all the way around the planet, I'd give 'em to ya.

I'm running a Peavey Envoy 110 it works pretty well for me with three different clean settings, three different distortion settings, pre and post gain control (plus the usual volume controls) plus reverb and boost (not sure what the boost dial actually does to be honest and I've had the amp for four years now)

You'll probably need to size up to a higher-wattage tube amp when you start playing with a drummer, and that's where you'll really start noticing the differences between pickups. I really hated my Steinberger's EMGs live, they just had no character at all. My playing seemed to automatically lose its dynamics. So I ripped all the electronics out, took the stock bridge pickup from my Gibson and wired it straight to the jack. It's been my favorite guitar since then.

As far as rants go, I have to walk six miles with my kid to get the kind of diapers we need today, because we couldn't order them, so now we're out of diapers, and they don't sell them in my neighborhood, but my wife is at work, and the stroller is in the trunk of her car, so it'll have to be a back carrier, and ever since I hurt my knee, carrying him in this thing SUCKS, but I don't really have a choice, so off we go. Sorry but I couldn't think of anything else to whine about. It's not actually that bad.:D

Like I say' date=' not so bad. I love spending time with him. It's something my dad didn't get to do with me when I was young. I treasure it. Even though my feet hurt.[/quote'] Aw :3 that's nice. My "rant" well not really one but still, is the fact that I miss my grandad and I wish he was here so I could give him a big hug and laugh with him like I used to :( still find it hard sometimes to believe he is gone.

Re: The Rant

Both my grandfathers are dead now and I know exactly what you mean.
I lost my grandma almost two years ago and I still feel sad sometimes. She was the only person who I could call my family and when she died a big part of me left with her. Who knows we might see our loved ones who passed some day. I feel for you.
Thank you guys, I really appreciate that. :) I still have my nan and my other grandparents but my grandad was not just an amazing grandad but a true friend. Sorry to hear about that FA and BFM I also think a big part of me left with my grandad too :(

I hope you have years left with them! I've got one grandmother left, and unfortunately she's been in the hospital a couple of times recently, but she's a tough cookie. She's 93. When she turned 90, I asked her how it felt to be 90 years old, and she said, "a lot like 89..." and then she looked off into the distance and sighed and said, "not like 70, though."

I'm about 500% fucking done. This fucking arrogant fucking poser I've been talking to... To start off, he begins saying that metalcore sucks when his profile picture is fucking ASHES OF THE WAKE. Bad enough? No? Okay. I mention it and how Lamb of God is metalcore. He proceeds to say that they're thrash/death. Still not bad enough? Got it. Then, apparently, I'm the one who knows nothing about the topic. He claims that they're not metalcore because... I'll just quote this idiot. "no their are not metal core at all lamb of god has to much ryhtm and use cords metal core bands have never touched and plus randy hits highnotes. something a metalcore band never does" Still not fucking bad enough? Since apparently metalcore bands have no "ryhtm" and don't touch whatever cords this idiot is mentioning, I mention Beneath The Massacre. Super technical metalcore band, right? I also bring up how 30% of LoG songs are breakdowns, while the rest are grooving riffs and hardcore-influenced vocals/lyrics. So he states that apparently he "eats sleeps and breathes real metal" and he's not a poser. I argue that he is a poser because he's acting to know a bunch of shit that he doesn't. I'll just quote this bit, "dude what the fuck i know alot about metal its all i do" STILL NOT BAD ENOUGH? He continues with saying I'm getting my facts from wiki (stopped doing that when I was 8) and if I listen to LoG I'll hear death and thrash metal and "even the guys in l.o.g will say thats what they are i know my stuff". I could stop here, but there's MORE. I argue that just because the members claim that they're something doesn't mean shit. I used Suicide Silence as my example. Then just more stuff about anyone at all who knows their genres will classify LoG as groove/metalcore, or one of the two. I'll quote another part. "l.o.g has to much rythme to be metalcore. i am an expert i know it's sound cocky buy if you knew me then you would know that iam not some hottopic bandwagoner and that i know what iam talking about." So, I mention Beneath The Massacre and how I use Metal-Archives to double-check myself and that it's a reliable source if he ever wants to know what the hell he's talking about. I'll quote what he said next: "dude go to hell i know what iam talking about and i dont need to double check. metalcore bands tend to only hit power chords if you listen to Mark morton play its almost classicall" Then I just give up on the dumbass and leave with calling him an arrogant dumbass poser. His last quote, "i know my fucking music and you are just to stupid to realize it,i dont give a fuck what you heard on some website i get my info from listening." I mentioned Beneath The Massacre three times and he still didn't reply to that because he's too cocky to bother listening to them. He'd probably just classify them as traditional or some shit. All of the quotes are spot-on with what he typed. This is what I have to deal with. This was my day.

Mate it really isn't worth getting worked up over. The guy is a grade A+ douchebag. I'll be the first to admit sometimes I do struggle to place bands in a certain genre but this guy not only attributes the wrong genre but outright lies about what the band in question call themselves. If it's any consolation I have to deal with annoying fuckwads like this as well but mine are sports related assholes whose sole purpose in life is to talk about how rubbish my team is when we've won more games then their team

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
