Saxon "The Power and the Glory" - one of the first heavy metal albums I ever listened to when I borrowed my older cousin's record collection when I was 13. The cover looks almost laughable to some I am sure but imagine being 13 and seeing that fucking electric pink, yellow and sky blue logo being cast like some big 80's mythical incantation from the glove of that Battlestar Galactica reject Cylon who failed in his interstellar domination attempts and ended up marketing 80's metal bands instead.
Massive nostalgia trip on a Tuesday. Fuck yeah!

FatherAlabaster gave a Damn to MacabreEternal in What's on your mind?
Managed to get a bit of groundwork done today out front. Laid new wooden border edges and significantly de-cluttered some existing plantation, sacrificing some for some new plants my folks brought over yesterday afternoon. Downside is my gf is suffering from some illness that has seen her laid up most of the day after a trip to the Walk In Centre (not an ED and not a hospital, imagine a medical centre with no doctors) this morning brought no real treatment.
After a few weeks working out of my office at home I am back out on the road for the day tomorrow running workshops for some clients, I am actually pretty excited about this even though it will be dull as fuck, just glad to be out the house for once. Getting some tunes together later for the (short) trip, just a playlist probably.
Congrats man.

FatherAlabaster given a Damn from MacabreEternal in What's on your mind?
It's been a nice week. It's the first time in years that I don't have some kind of major project or other obligation hanging over my head. I've been reading a lot, staying off the internet more than usual, and trying to clear my mind. The weather has been good enough that I've been to the park with my son nearly every day, and I've gotten out on the bicycle twice. He and I are a lot happier when we get some exercise; winter sucked, it felt like all we could do was sit inside and rot. My wife and I celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary on Wednesday with a breakfast date and a walk along the river. Hope y'all have been well.

That would be the appropriate thing to do with an Anvil shirt.

Giving this one repeat listens as I seem to like it more each time.

FatherAlabaster gave a Damn to SpaceBrain in What makes a genre?
I think the point of having genres is to enhance communication, and for that matter it's ultimately the community that should be defining what falls under what genre, and what each genre is.
From a more philosophical standpoint, you could attempt to define genres by delineating various musical traits and creating a space from these musical traits. Then you could populate this space with bands (data points) and employ statistical learning algorithms to try to find clusters. Each cluster would be given a genre label, and bands that fall around the periphery of a cluster or don't fall into a cluster would be described as either being a blend of genres or unclassified.
I think this approach would be interesting, but one problem with it is that it's hard to make it account for the way music is interpreted in the human brain, or by different human brains. It's also hard to determine which musical traits to care about, and how much each one should be cared about (weighting/scaling). I think it's quite reasonable to have the community figure genres out through listening and discussion/debate because that lies closest to the heart of the purpose of having genres, which is to facilitate communication and exploration.

Yeah, Iron Maiden, Crimson Glory, Lethal, etc. were also pretty good hair metal, man. Best of the Sunset Strip, brother.

FatherAlabaster gave a Damn to Requiem in Metal Mythology
This is mostly how I feel about horror movies. I always want the best for the people being attacked and I feel bad when they get it (mostly). As a father, too, I simply can't watch anything that endangers children or makes them scared. I don't find that very entertaining.
I do like movies like The Shining, however, I guess because I know the kid gets away and it's more psychological than gorey.

Holy shit. Demilich was so, so good. They were tight and confident, and all the little nuances from the recordings were right there - not just the tempo changes and off-kilter grooves, but all the expressive flair that brings the music to life. The tone and feel were perfect. Impeccable set. If you have a chance to see them, do it.

Well, Blood Incantation is the real deal live. Impressive set. Weird venue, it's tiny and half the floor space is taken up by a bar. Looking forward to watching Antti burp.
