Benni given a Damn from blaaacdoommmmfan in Thoughts on metal and negativity
I've always experienced a lot of judgment for listening to very dark or very hard/heavy music, especially with me being female. Everyone thinks I should always be happy and positive etc and that I should like pretty pink things and puppies and bubblegum pop songs. If I listen to metal they worry or discourage it.
Many people I know have a belief that metal will "corrupt" me or others
I would say that overall I'm not a dark or light kind of person, I live in both sides of the spectrum
I think you touched on something real when you said that darkness is beneficial just like light, and that reality has its dark aspects which cannot be avoided
I think we live in a society that wants us to avoid certain realities and only focus on the positive ones, but I think that theres a lot that can be learned and enjoyed on the darker side of things, too
Many have worried about me due to the concepts that some of the albums that i like are about. But I see metal albums and songs as pieces of art. These aren't things for me to emulate, they are creative works that express a certain emotion or experience. I'm able to keep that separate from who I am and how I view the world, myself and my life.
If I go to a horror movie or an art exhibit with extreme themes, that doesn't really say anything about me. I just went and consumed some art. And I view negativity or darkness in metal the same way - as merely some art I consumed
Sometimes I'm in a dark place and so I'm really personally vibing with the themes in the music I listen to but sometimes I'm happy or positive and I'm just listening to metal because I appreciate the artistic complexity of it. Or the intensity of the expression
Maybe I have a stronger appreciation for darkness and that's why I like metal and horror movies so much, but I don't think it's really something to worry about or analyze too deeply
I don't know if I stayed on topic here, I hope I did

Benni given a Damn from Tortuga in 80's and 90's metal vs. nowdays metal
    well i feel like yes
but then again I like metal from then and now
its so different now but still good in new ways
but i have such a positive association to the metal i used to listen to as a child. so to me it will always be special or "golden"
i think being real would be to accept that many things we see now are just offshoots of great original creative ideas from the past
there is no area of life in which the past has become no longer relevant. the past is what shapes the future and it's what created our current now
"who cares about how great judas priest used to be?" me, for one. everyone I know. i think everyone should care about how great judas priest used to be. i think thats a very relevant topic in the art world in general, and in music, and it always will be. i would hope that my great grandchildren would one day find out how great judas priest was
there are so many aspects of classic music that we just can't hear anymore. so its good to be appreciative of the then and the now. that way you can have a full understanding of music and how it has evolved

Benni given a Damn from H34VYM3T4LD4V3 in The Movie Thread
I saw it, it was wonderful. Very imaginative. Very exciting. At first I was kind of unsure, but I got really involved and ultimately wanted to move to Wakanda
Yesterday I watched Guardians of the Galaxy. Both movies. I didn't think I would like them and that's why I waited so long to see them. They just seemed odd and frivolous or something. But it turns out they're really good.
The characters are just hilarious. I was screaming. I don't know why I found it so funny
I also love Groot. But then again it seems everyone loves Groot

Benni given a Damn from salmonellapancake in Chicago Metalhead Here
    Hi Everyone, I'm Benni
I'm a writer and artist. I've been a metalhead for as long as I can remember. I used to watch metal videos as a kid and my mom found this curious which i found funny. But over my lifetime I really never stopped liking metal.
I've been to a lot of metal shows over the years, more than I remember myself.
I like a lot of bands, more than I could possibly ever name, but I do tend to really enjoy melodic death metal, black metal, and technical death metal. I'm a huge Nine Inch Nails fans, I think that bears mentioning. I like Industrial a lot.
But I don't really get into categorizing subgenres and bands very closely, because I like to focus on what makes things similar rather than what makes them different. Besides, it doesn't matter to me what something is called in words. If I like a song or a band's sound that's what matters to me.
I love horror movies, food, beer, concerts and festivals, books, sci fi, fantasy, and like I mentioned I like to draw. I typically draw and paint every day. My dream is to write and illustrate my own graphic novel and I'm working on that but it will probably take me a lifetime since it already took me 4 years just to learn how to paint and I'm not veryproud of that.
But I really like to see other peoples art every day, so I tend to nose around design and concept art sites and i like to read comics and graphic novels, especially the darker content. I love Dark Horse comics or anything by Ben Templesmith (I think his style is so beautiful, his people always look like they're glowing from the inside). But i really don't have a whole lot of time for comics like I used to. Too much time spent at the canvas these days.
Anyway, I really look forward to getting to know everyone and to learning from you all. And if there's anything you want to know about me, I'm an open book.

Welcome. Feel free to share some of your work in the "Your Artwork" thread if you're so inclined. Spending four years learning how to paint is nothing to be ashamed of. I've been painting for over twenty years and drawing for over thirty and I'm still playing catch-up.
I like a bunch of 90s melodeath and some tech death, although I haven't been in the mood recently. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Benni given a Damn from Balor in Hello from a long time metalhead
Really? that's cool. I think the first death metal band i got into was Children of Bodom. I didn't really think I would ever like anything harder than just regular metal but after hearing them I just wanted to try every band and see how heavy I could go. Now I don't really have a limit.
I'm always impressed by metal vocalists. I honestly want to learn to scream. I've been working on it. I'm a good singer in general but I've always had a very clean sound. I am able to get distortion of some kinds but right now its not very consistent. But I hear a lot of vocals in metal that just amaze me and then I want to do it too. Sometimes when I don't think about it I can produce a pretty amazing scathing sound, but then I cant recreate it and that makes me sad
Oh yes, I like Dissection. That's definitely my kind of sound. I just didn't want my list to get too long so I had to narrow it down quite a bit. There are a lot of groups I like but brevity is good

Thanks guys for the warm welcome!
Well, I like so many different styles within metal. I can safely say that I like the best stuff from almost every subgenre, though I'm not a very big fan of metalcore/deathcore.
Tech/prog death metal has always been a personal favourite especially if done well. Obscura, Beyond Creation, Atheist, Decrepit Birth (Diminishing Between Worlds and Polarity only), Augury (Concealed) etc.
Apart from the above, a brief glimpse at some bands I like a lot - Anacrusis, Anathema, Skid Row, King's X, Sigh, Vektor etc.

Long lists are a forum's bread and butter, don't be shy.
Sweet list. I loooove the first two Atheist albums, and Decrepit Birth's "Diminishing" and Augury's "Fragmentary Evidence" are among the handful of modern tech DM albums I enjoy. Are you a fan of Anata? I'm also into Anacrusis (especially Suffering Hour), old Anathema, and Vektor.

Cool!  I like Behemoth quite a bit, and Amon Amarth was one of the first Death Metal bands that I got into.  While I am not a fan of Deathcore, I was always impressed by the vocalist in Job for a Cowboy.  No Dissection?

Benni gave a Damn to Requiem in 80's and 90's metal vs. nowdays metal
The past is a whole heap of 'nows' collected behind us. Our current time is simply one set of 'now'. Therefore, the past is better because it contains 50 years of metal 'nows', whereas the current moment only contains one, and the future none at all.
    The past wins.

Black metal is terrible. Whoever thought painting their faces with clown paint and making noise that sounds like it was recorded in a public bathroom was a good idea? And quite frankly when every single song on every single album is about Satan it gets a little stale. I'm aware that not every black metal band is like this, but they all look and sound the same to me: corpse painted dudes with spikes everywhere with dramatic hand gestures, unintelligible band font and Satan Satan Satan.

Too me, Metal is Metal. It has gotten so out of hand with these sub-Genres. If you listen to it and you like it thats the end of it. I do understand a certain amount of Subs like thrash, death, power, etc... but come on. I like all sorts of metal and there are some i cant even listen to a minute of. But I give it a chance. This was just my opinion.

    Hey guys,
My name's Dragos, I'm Canadian. Favourite metal genres are speed / heavy / thrash and black/death metal, but also listen to other music as well. Been into metal about 15 years now, looking forward to chatting with others about new and old bands alike.
I've also played in about 30 projects over the years, some that did nothing more than a few rehearsals and others that got to play festivals and record full-lengths.

Just because something is new does not entail that it is in any way better (or more worthy of attention) than something that is old.  Just as anticipation of the future can bring new advents to music (and anything really), so can reexamination of the past.
