Re: Let's Help Each Other Discover NEW BANDS.

Did you read through it? The point is a non-genre-specific discussion thread. Initially I thought it was a silly idea' date=' but it grew on me. It's worked better than I thought it would, but it's hard to keep up with everything, and I'm not always in a position to listen or to post more stuff.[/quote'] This has been my problem. Since taking the reigns at work, shit has been going kind of crazy, since the owner decided not to train anyone on his departure. I have been able to figure out what I need to on what I was not shown, but the help I have hired doesn't really know what to do, and I haven't had much time to train them properly/correctly/fully. Hopefully things mellow out and I can contribute some more here, I like how this thread has developed. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Ok. I am the absolute worst when it comes to describing what I'm listening to. I wish I could. I suppose its my achilies heel so any attempt would be embarassing and nothing short of unintelligible rambling. With that said, these guys are my new fav find. They're a prog DM group from Sweden. Kind of the likes of Opeth....I think Descend - In Hours of Despair another link - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2MlMf-cfU5E
THIS! I checked this link out a while back and really got into them, but I didn't remember the band name the next morning and my history was cleared out. I'm going to buy this album now.

I couldn't really find a category this would go in, so if you feel like it's necessary to move this to another thread, by all means - do so. I'm looking for a specific style in metal, and there are bands that sort of fit the style, but I listen to them so much I get burnt out from them quickly. To get a better idea of the genre/style I'm looking for, I'll list a few bands that are really similar to what I'm looking for, in one way or another. In This Moment (First album I liked the most. Mainly because the clean vocals and heavy vocals are great from that woman.) Five Finger Death Punch (Excellent heavy vocals, clean vocals are well done for a male singer.) Icon For Hire (I know, at heaviest they're alternative metal, but I really like the woman's vocals and I think it'd fit in metal well if done right.) Insomnium (This style isn't really required, but it'd be awesome to have the addition of epic melodic guitar work.) All That Remains (Phil does the vocals really well.) Basically what I'm looking for are: Heavier vocals that aren't crazy throaty and gritty like usually found in doom/death metal, but mainly for the verses. Clean Vocals, preferably a woman's, but can be a guy's vocals if done well enough. Instruments that really complement the vocals. Are passionate sounding instruments and vocals. Can't be having a band with potential, but aren't passionate sounding. Epic melodic guitars (Not really needed, but are preferred)

If someone's interested in hearing something new' date=' here is my band's first music video. This song is easy, next ones will be a lot heavier. It's gonna be something between trash, groove, doom, power and gothic metal. Check it out and show it to your friends if you like it!! Here is video on youtube

In Vain, In Mourning, Grown Below, maybe Mutiny Within, Amaranthe and Clandestine. Battlelore could work too. Also do your own research. Amazon and iTunes recommendations, as well as Wikipedia articles, could help you if you're willing to invest the time.

Just curious about some bands that maybe I've never heard before. I like the sound (guitars) of Killswitch Engage and Amon Amarth. What other bands do you think I might like? I've listened to Behemoth some but they tend to be a little fast for my taste. I know there are good bands out there that I've probably never heard before, never heard Amon Amarth until I got on satellite radio. Any suggestions?

Re: Metal band suggestions? Sounds like melodeath would be a good way to go. Try stuff like Dark Tranquillity, old In Flames, Darkane, old Arch Enemy, Carcass' Heartwork, At the Gates' Terminal Spirit Disease, Sacrilege (Swe), The Crown, Enforsaken, Edge of Sanity's The Spectral Sorrows, etc... Some melodeath bands I recommend: Insomnium, Be'Lakor, Omnium Gatherum, Whispered, Hearse, Soulfallen, Dark Tranquillity, Dreamshade, Shadow (Japanese), Kalmah, Soilwork, Before the Dawn, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Barren Earth, Mors Principium Est, Nightfall, Fractal Gates, Opeth, Ghost Brigade, In Mourning, Daylight Dies, Deals Death, Suidakra, Amorphis, Kataklysm, Wolfheart... Not all of them are 'pure' melodeath, like Barren Earth, who is actually progdeath, but you might like them :)

@Yobo: it seems you give Insomnium as a recomendation to everyone. Also, I have no fucking idea what kinda bands I should recommend... You're searching for melodic mainstream metalcore bands or what?... "I like the guitar sound"... Sorry, I don't know any metal band where I like the guitar sound myself... WTF.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
