Whatcha Eatin'?

Re: Whatcha Eatin'?

Best Mexican food I ever had... beef cabeza tacos from a food truck on the side of the highway outside of Reno. So random. so unexpected. pure fucking joygasm in the mouth.
Taco trucks are more authentic, and better, than many Mexican restaurants I've eaten at. When I went to Mexico, that's how they served tacos in town, small corn tortillas, meat, pico de gallo, and maybe some guacamole and salsa verde on the side. No cheese, no sour cream, no smothering in enchilada sauce, just some nice clean flavors that mixed wonderfully on my tortilla. I also like to get a bit adventurous with the meat, and the brain is fucking delicious. It's really rich, so I usually don't get more than 1 or 2 on a 4 taco plate, and usually mix al pastor and barbacoa pork for the others, but the tongue and cheek are also pretty great. Our trucks are hit and miss. But we have a shit ton of them: taco trucks, halal food trucks, chicken trucks, waffle trucks, coffee trucks... Some are very good, others, eh. Hands down the best Mexican food I've had in the city is at a restaurant called Taco Chulo. Great ingredients, totally customizable recipes, house-made sauces, and the drinks are banging too - the only place in the city that I ever order a mixed drink, come to think of it. Hard to go wrong. Still on my shepherd's pie! So good to have, now that I basically took a day off from eating.

There's a few good places down here in Adelaide as well. One place I really liked was the Tapp Inn but they changed their menu and frankly the new menu is uninspired and bland. I had some great food in Victoria earlier this year, great food in Ballarat and Melbourne. There was also some not-so-good food in Melbourne though.

This was actually a nice contrast. The night before we (the family and I) went to this brilliant Italian place, It was pretty much the best pasta I've ever eaten and a top contender for the best food I've ever had period. The next night we go to a different Italian place and it was awful, I mean really bad, and it was expensive. Seriously that place charged WAY too much for what they plated up.

Re: Whatcha Eatin'?

dinner was really nice. I had Mary's chicken (a really good humane local farm) wrapped and stuffed with collard spinach and zucchini, topped with a lemony parsley gremolata and a side of sauteed bell peppers and onions. Soooo delicious, and so healthy! :D
Sounds awesome, I love all of those things. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Ghouly's dinner sounds great. I'm having an odd time cutting carbs down; considering that bread was most of what I ate, I just wind up not eating, and then being hungry. Also cutting back on the beer, which means less calories all around... I just finished the last of my shepherd's pie tonight. Up next, a traditional beef stew, or maybe a big pot of chicken soup? I need to learn how to make a pie crust, so I can make my own chicken pot pie.

I'm envying you Aussies right now. My favorite Italian food in the city has gone to meh recently. We've got an ok place in the neighborhood (surprisingly) as well as one of my favorite pizza joints and an amazing Spanish restaurant, but I can't recall the last time I ate at any of them. We don't live in the most super-awesome neighborhood, and as it becomes more upscale I suspect we will be priced out.

I haven't been to many of my favorite places in a while either. Money has been tight with baby expenses and other things, so we've been trying to cook more than go out. Some of that good Italian sounds wonderful right now, my favorite place in town makes fantastic carpaccio, and A lamb shank that literally falls off the bone. *drool* Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Aaargh, really, now I won't be able to get to sleep without my tummy growling at me! We definitely had to save a lot to prepare for our son, and we took quite a hit once he was born, but we did get to spend a lot of time with him right after his birth. That's really the most important thing. And then there was a window where we could take him with us to restaurants and he didn't mind. We're well out of that now! :D Can't take him anywhere except a park most days. It's a good thing, keeps us from spending money we shouldn't. Though I go a bit stir crazy sometimes. Tuna carpaccio... steak carpaccio... thanks for that.

There's two schools for pot pie... flaky layered puff pastry style crust or pastry (pastie) type crust? I have a recipe for the latter which is amazing.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
