In the early 80's metal for me was a middle finger to the establishment, it was rebellion. Today, it's my wife saying "can you turn that down"-haha.....the more things change the more they stay the same. 
In the modern era, I see metal as this secret little corner of my life that allows me to embrace all kinds of extremity and  feelings that aren't easily expressed in other settings-antisocial, pathological, primal feelings of hostility, rage, insanity, existential dread and the embrace of all manner of genre defying creative expression....metal taps into lizard brain.
Piece of Mind is one of my favorite 80's metal albums. Metal is the secret of the hangman, the smile on his lips. 
Or as Nails recently wrote, you will never be one of us. That's metal. The middle finger.

I find it amusing that even most commonwealthers with their supposed contempt for the Imperial system of measurements will typically state their heights and weights in feet/inches and pounds respectively, not centimeters and kilograms. 
Celcius is stupid, if only for the fact that the degrees are too far apart. They only have 100 degrees between freezing and boiling, where Farenheight has 180 degrees. Which makes Farenheight far more precise and therefore more useful. 
I'd totally be willing to abandon quarters, eighths and sixteenths of inches in favor of centimeters and milimeters though if everyone else would. Don't see America wanting to change over though.

Back by popular demand (or at least the demands of the Goatmaster) it's Fuck Around Fridays were I pick a random listen for a Friday morning.  This week some blackened death/thrash from Sweden in the form of Beastiality.  Pretty much right up your alley if you like Nifelheim, bullet belts, studded leather and pictures of men holding skulls and chains in a menacing fashion.  
Sacrificial Chants is fifteen minutes of blackened bashing and smashing to make your necro bollocks tingle.  One of the many popular beat combos you find on Invictus Productions nowadays.

TENTACULT - Lacerating Pattern. This is good stuff. Musically interesting enough for Thatguy, but not so techie as to scare off the goats. The fainting goats.

you have made a good point. proto-death is a valid argument and a fair classification since like black metal, death metal also originated from thrash. seven churches is proto-death. now their follow up "beyond the gates" is very much a straight up thrash metal album. no argument there. probably why so many fans considered "beyond the gates" a down grade. but i didn't mind it, though. i think "beyond the gates" is a decent album. b.t.g. was a tad generic, but still good.
hell, possessed weren't even the first to use the term "death metal" lol. noise records put out a comp in '84 called death metal, but i believe the title was probably due to the lyrical themes of most the songs on it and the cover art too i guess. you gotta admit that is some wicked sick album art, death metal or not
