Queuing the one piece of Christmas music I try to play once a year-Handel's Messiah-one of the great pieces of classical music in the repertoire as they say-the whole bloody thing-it's up there with Bach's Mathew Passion as two of the great religious oratorio's in Western music.  Both versions I have by John Elliot Gardiner-one of the father's of the period instrument movement -big fan of this style-doing it like they did it in the late 1600-early 1700's vs the overblown modern orchestras.

So I went to a fancy pants legit Hi-Fi store today. Hifibuys in Atlanta. Super nice folks. Listened to an unobtanium system (D'Agustino, Audio Research, Wilson Audio speakers, and some crazy turntable with an optical/light cartridge) spec'd out around 500k. A second system that I really don't remember the setup other than the KEF towers spec'd about 50k. And a third tube setup (Primaluna) with Vandersteen speakers and a Hi-Fi Rose streamer that came in around 20k. To be honest, I was most impressed with the last one. I could never see actually spending that kind of cash on a system, but it was still really cool to experience them. Dude asked me what kind of music I listened to and I kinda chuckled. I said generally poorly recorded rock and metal. I just let him drive. Jazz on the crazy system, Dire Straits on the second, and Tool on the third. Have to say that I would have loved to hear Archgoat or Blood Incantation on one of them, but it probably would have gotten me kicked out. Anyway, now that I'm home, I'm listening to Tool to compare my stuff to the system I really liked.
    Tool - Fear Inoculum
    Tool - 10,000 Days
Btw - for those wondering, my 1 minute review of each.
    1) 500k system - obnoxiously sterile. Analytical to the point of being unenjoyable. I never knew what exactly people meant by analytical, but I do now and I don't like it. Give me some fuzzy warmth. Sounded like the band was in the room about 20 feet away. Could see it being ok with well recorded jazz and classical.
    2) 50k system - better, but nothing special. I knew I was listening to a stereo but a really good one. Dire Straits sounded amazing, but lacking punch and a little forward although the music choice could be the culprit. Maybe even a touch bright. I think blues would be best suited.
    3) 20k system - more along the lines of what I could do. Good sound, punchy, zero distortion. A 2 channel setup I could deal with every day. Listening to the same music now however, it's not worth the money. There isn't 18k difference between my stuff. I could probably spend another 5k on my own and achieve the same sound. I don't listen audiophile-like though, so it would be rather pointless.

Yeah, the internet seems to think it's either them, or a punk band called the Germs from LA. This Lexicon Devil EP is from May '78 but they also had a single out in '77 that was maybe a little less hardcorish. As with any new sub-genre it's hard to know exactly where to draw the line between what was punk and what was hardcore. I'm sure there were other bands in the mix as well that have been largely forgotten because they just didn't get any recordings out there. I was in high school from '76 to '79 and I wasn't aware of any of these bands at the time, I only knew the Ramones, the Pistols, the Dead Boys and the Clash.
DC's Bad Brains formed in 1976, but I believe they were playing some kind of a jazz fusion at first going by the name of Mind Power and then switched to playing hardcore later, taking their name from the Ramones song Bad Brain (1978) Even though they wouldn't describe themselves as a hardcore band because they have wide ranging influences like jazz and raggae, I think most of the rest of the punk world considers them one of the earliest notable hardcore bands. But they did't get an album out til '82, and by that time hardcore was already a well established sub-genre.

The Germs - Lexicon Devil EP 1978

SS - Coca Cola, 1978 Japan Raw Hardcore Punk/Noise Punk. Then there were these guys SS briefly over in Japan who broke up in 1979.

The Clash - The Clash, UK 1977, first two Clash albums were better before they went all commercial. Not that I really mind their more commercial stuff.

The Decibel calendar continues to be an isolated version of time that chops a month and a half off the year.  I have heard a few of those albums this year (including that awful Kreator one) and could not agree more with Nergal in that quote.

On discogs you can catalogue your collection. Create an account, find the cd editions that you own and add them to your collection, the lowest and highest sale value of each cd will be shown along with the value of the whole collection.

Sardonicist gave a Damn to Dead1 in Pantera!
I got into Pantera, Sepultura and Slayer before  I started getting into Cradle of Filth and also melodic death metal (and stuff like Nevermore and Iced Earth) in the late 1990s.  Funny thing was I found those first three bands far more extreme than melodic death or symphonic black metal.
Melodic death metal was always "easy listening" music whilst CoF's appeal was the campy Hammer Horror vibe, not musical extremity (and I still regularly listen to them).
At the time if I wanted extremity it'd still be Slayer's Divine Intervention or Pantera's Great Southern Trendkill.  Suicide Note Pt II is still an absolute rush to listen to - the musical intensity is matched by lyrical intensity.
I even find a lot of thrash metal more extreme than a lot of death metal I like - eg Kreator's Pleasure to Kill or Endless Pain are more visceral, intense and raw than a lot of DM I like like Atheist, Cancer, Carcass, Edge of Sanity, Morbid Angel and even some Napalm Death (though these boys are back to face peeling) etc.

I it seemed relevant to impulse control which is a part of the conversation on this thread.
I know a way to avoid having the impulse to express diet related opinions in the future.
Humans are animals, so animals have emotions.

Permanent damage can be done without ear plugs, I've had bad tinnitus ever since my first metal gig (Pantera, Far Beyond Driven show in Auckland). Everyone had their hands over their ears.

Have a pair of Tinhifi T3 plus iems coming tomorrow. Reviews and hype have been over the top for a budget set of iems, so I talked myself down from OH10s which are 3 times the price.
I am more interested in iems at the moment than hps. I will look forward to comparing some of my gear when I get a chance.

Hungarino is wrong, the way to reduce the occurrence of real sexual violence is to increase the creation of, and appreciation for, sexually violent art.
