Movies

I was recently surprised by how solid Dredd 3D was as a mindless actioner. In general I tend to stick to horror' date=' exploitation, martial arts and arthouse cinema though. Currently on rather a pinku kick and I've recently enjoyed Rope and Skin, Flower and Snake 3 + 4, Lesbian Rape: Sweet Honey Juice and A Pool Without Water.[/quote'] not a big fan of horror, best films for me: Muppets treasure island (kiddy i know) Bullit The Italian Job (original not bullshit new one) James bond series Von Ryan's Express Kung fu Panda Austin Powers - The Spy who shagged me Toy Story series The Man Who Would Be King

Re: Movies

dude how have you never seen Silence Of The Lambs? seriously Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter gave me nightmares for months
I love Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins is awesome in that role. Has anybody subjected themselves to the punishment of The Human Centipede? That was a tough movie to watch, I liked it overall, but there are some things you just can't un-see, like some of the more cringe worthy scenes in Antichrist.

Re: Movies

Was that the Chinese film about a Kung fu master?
Yes, one who lived during the Japanese occupation of China.

Part of the problem is that it just seems an excuse to put people thought pain rather than craft a good story.

Re: Movies For the most part I agree, it was a bit senseless in the end, but the idea and the execution are still horrifying. One of the few movies recent movies I've seen with that level of gore and torture that actually had a good story was Martyrs, I really enjoyed that one. The aforementioned Antichrist did too, but it was really more about the story and atmosphere all along and just had a few really painful mutilation scenes.

Re: Movies The cars are pretty cool and the ladies are attractive enough, albeit in a sort of bland, production line fashion that I don't find especially memorable (apart from the way cute Mary Elizabeth Winstead). But the pacing is very poor, with only a small fraction of the film given over to excitement or interest, and most of the runtime is given over to excruciatingly bad dialogue that tries so hard to be hip and sassy that it completely omits to be witty or likeable. There are a few moments of agreeable vehicular mayhem and Kurt Russel shines whenever on screen but otherwise it's a washout, hard to believe it came from the usually reliable Tarantino.

Re: Movies davey boy what good is a cool car and hot girls if the plot is rubbish and the acting is bad? that's why the fast and furious franchise is so inexcusably poor recently watched Prometheus and I have to say it was incredibly disappointing, for a movie that had such potential I can not believe it turned out to be worse then Alien three

Hah, I enjoyed Prometheus. Messy plotting, weak characterisation and some extremely silly moments, but as a devotee of B grade slimy sci fi horror schlock I thought it did the business pretty well. I liked it more than Aliens or Alien: Resurrection, but not as much as Alien or Alien 3.

Re: Movies I never liked Aliens much, although it did indirectly contribute to the greatness of Near Dark, which is one of my favorite films. But then outside of The Terminator I'm just not a fan of James Cameron as a director. Still better than whichever eejit made AvP: Requiem though, that really was an embarassing botch of a film. Poor lighting and ineptly constructed scenes of violence on a par with the dire Friday 13th rehash.

Re: Movies

Recently saw Death Proof' date=' which was atrocious, and Lawless, which was quite good, though utterly generic.[/quote'] It's easily my least favorite of Tarantino's movies, but it's not atrocious. I actually loved the first part of the movie, right up until the crash, and then the second half of the story just felt weak. The first part was a bit slow, but was building tension the entire time up until the crash, the second part was more cheesy, and not in a good way.

Re: Movies I watched a bunch of movies over the weekend, the best of which being Hesher and Let the Right One In. Hesher was about a kid that loses his mother in a car accident, and the "metalhead" kid from his high school starts crashing at his place despite his objections. He does just as much to help them out as fuck them over, but it was really good throughout, sad in some parts and funny in others. Let the Right One In was about a 12 year old kid that makes a new friend his age that ends up being a vampire, and while I realize how stupid that sounds, there's much more to it than that. It's not the gothic vampire shit we're used to seeing from the Hot Topic crowd, but actually a pretty deep and intriguing story, one of the more original vampire movies I've seen in a while. Also watched Sweet Karma, which was a pretty good revenge movie, Doghouse, which was like Shaun of the Dead, but nowhere near as good, and re-watched Borat with my cousins that hadn't seen it. As always, it's nice.

Re: Movies I saw Snow White and the Huntsman recently, and I feel sorry for the armorers, CGI people and concept artists. They seem to have worked quite hard to make this a great-looking movie, but they're let down by a boring story with bland characters and dialogue that's mumbled throughout. One of the few good things about this movie was Charlize Theron as the Queen. She overacted hilariously, which helped to relieve the cloud of indifference that hung over me watching this ambitiously visualized yet apathetically written flick.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
