  3. Re: spirituality I'm agnostic towards the notion of a God in any kind of Abrahamic sense, but I do believe in a sort of conscious pervading depth and balance to the universe. That is, I believe in an impossibly complex and at the very least proto-sentient system underlying everything, a system distinct from physical, observable reality but one upon which physical reality is founded. As for after death, I think that we return to the realm of the mental, which is removed from perfect understanding but closer to that level than physical reality. After we run through the loop a few to a few million times, eventually we figure it all out and exist in a state of understanding.
  4. Re: who would you rather be? Bergman. I only enjoy maybe three Kubrick films (Dr. Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange), whereas Bergman has yet to disappoint me. Lynch or Cronenberg?
  5. Re: who would you rather be? Al Gore. Both are nit-wits but I'd rather be fighting the very real evils of man-bear-pig than the made up evils of heavy metal. Dracula or Frankenstein's monster?

Re: Movies Yeah, I doubt Event Horizon would faze todays viewers much, apart from the supernatural aspect. The Saw franchise kinda makes me laugh actually, I don't much care for them but it amuses me that they've made wince making graphic violence mainstream.

Re: Movies I don't think there was an alternate ending, but the stories go that the original cut was gruesome enough that it would have gotten an NC17 rating from the MPAA, so the producers had the violence cut down quite significantly. Then that trimmed cut was shown to test audiences, who thought it was still too gruesome and also too long, so scenes of plotting and character development were cut down as well. In total I think some 20 odd minutes were removed in total. Worst movie I've ever seen is Night of Horror, from 1981 or thereabouts (some sources say it was made in '78). I'm the kind of guy who often really likes films that other people say are the worst ever, I'm a big fan of Manos: The Hands of Fate for example. But Night of Horror is neither strange, hypnotic nor amusing in its badness, just unbearably dull. The highlights are a plastic prop skull, a stretch of Civil War re-enactment footage and a smudge on the camera lens. There are films I've disliked more, but Night of Horror is easily the worst I've seen, and I'd say is a candidate for the worst ever made.

Re: Movies It's a crying shame that the intact version of Event Horizon is probobly lost forever. Still a cool film in the cut that got released, but I'd love to see the original X/NC17 cut, or even the trimmed but still extended one that got pooh-poohed by test audiences.

Re: Movies Saw Looper this afternoon. Illogical premise, predictable plot and Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks far too disimilar to the character he portrays, but still solid entertainment due to a smart pace, quality performances, witty writing and some agreeable violence. Recommended (unless you happen to be a type given to thinking hard about this sort of film).
  15. Re: Euronymous killed Dead? My guess is that if Euronymous had killed Dead he probobly would have bragged about it to someone. More likely that Dead just killed himself, being well known for being quite a sad panda and all.

Re: Movies I never liked Aliens much, although it did indirectly contribute to the greatness of Near Dark, which is one of my favorite films. But then outside of The Terminator I'm just not a fan of James Cameron as a director. Still better than whichever eejit made AvP: Requiem though, that really was an embarassing botch of a film. Poor lighting and ineptly constructed scenes of violence on a par with the dire Friday 13th rehash.

    Death

Re: Death I think after death we persist in the minds of others, but not in any kind of conscious afterlife. Without going too deeply into my metaphysics I believe that thought is the underlying stratum of reality and when freed from physical reality we return to the true one, unbodied. As such, I welcome death. Which is not to say that I shun life, I just don't ascribe much importance to it in the grand scheme of things.

Re: Movies Hah, I enjoyed Prometheus. Messy plotting, weak characterisation and some extremely silly moments, but as a devotee of B grade slimy sci fi horror schlock I thought it did the business pretty well. I liked it more than Aliens or Alien: Resurrection, but not as much as Alien or Alien 3.

Re: Movies The cars are pretty cool and the ladies are attractive enough, albeit in a sort of bland, production line fashion that I don't find especially memorable (apart from the way cute Mary Elizabeth Winstead). But the pacing is very poor, with only a small fraction of the film given over to excitement or interest, and most of the runtime is given over to excruciatingly bad dialogue that tries so hard to be hip and sassy that it completely omits to be witty or likeable. There are a few moments of agreeable vehicular mayhem and Kurt Russel shines whenever on screen but otherwise it's a washout, hard to believe it came from the usually reliable Tarantino.
  24. Re: Which BM in your country makes you proud? Fen, probobly. I'm really liking the present swell of atmospheric black metal in the UK, Fen, Wondensthrone, Winterfylleth and such, think Fen are about the best of 'em though.
