Just found out that one of my best friends, who doesn't listen to much metal at all (and certainly not Krallice, Dysrhythmia, Behold... The Arctopus, or Gorguts), went to high school and apparently was pretty good friends with Colin Marston. He's like, oh, you like his band, I should introduce you guys and maybe you can jam or something... Ha!

I hope everyone is doing well.  I am sorry for my crazy hiatus from the forum over the last few months.  I guess when I got the bad grades last semester I just wanted no part of anything except facebook to talk to family and friends, and homework to guarantee my success.  Turns out I ended this semester with a 3.7 GPA and will receive my masters degree the end of July=)  I will be moving out of shitty Cleveland afterwards and heading to Germany August 1=)  These past few months have been emotional roller coasters of doom, but, I think I am slowly starting to do better.  I have had to get used to being in a serious relationship again, I had forgotten how much it can be sometimes, heh.   I have also thought about starting to play  piano again as well as start cooking classes/ culinary school so that I can get into things that I enjoy again.  I am going to Florida in a couple of weeks with my boyfriend and his band in Tampa and will be hanging out with Black Milk aka Evan =D  How has everyone been doing with their lives?  I see and speak to some on facebook, but I would like to know how others are doing =)

I doubt it will ever actually come about, and it's kind of an intimidating thought, but I'm sure I'd learn a ton getting to play with a musician of that caliber.

Erik from Vektor said him and I should jam together at some point, and I felt the same. I'm totally not in that league, but I'm sure I would learn a ton.

If nothing else it would present an opportunity to learn from a great musician. Could open some doors for Black Harvest down the road as well if you two get on and he wants an opening act for a tour.

That's great Mindy. Glad things are starting to go your way.

I'm about to drop out of my degree. I don't enjoy it, I'm not motivated to do the work, and all I can think of while I'm there is things I'd rather be doing.

Coming to the sudden realisation that I am desperately unhappy with my life. It's really difficult for me to think positively about anything these days. Even things I've always enjoyed like cycling and playing guitar seem more like daily chores at present. This isn't the first time I've had such feelings but my coping mechanism (spinning some records and getting lost in the music) is no longer working. Life just seems so hard right now and I don't feel I can reach out to anyone.

You can always reach out to us. I get the feeling, I go through it sometimes myself. It does pass. Basically, all the good times and all the bad times are pretty much transient and it's up to you which you focus on. Life's little truisms.

It's also not surprising that you'd be going through some turmoil after moving out, regardless of how good it is to be out of your old situation. And I assume you're still a bit sick, and thinking about stopping your degree. So I bet you're overwhelmed. It's a tough time for you, but you'll get through it.

True it's a dramatic change which comes with its own challenges. Add to that the loneliness I'm feeling and it's hardly surprising. I know this isn't full-blown depression so that in itself is a huge positive. I know I'm strong enough to come out the other side so that's another plus. I guess this shit builds character or some such garbage.

Are you seeing anyone about this Relentless, it really does help. Even if it is just someone you can sit down and talk to. We're here to help if you need us, but nothing works quite as well as seeing a professional.

In other news, saw Magnum last night in Holmfirth. The opening act was brilliant, but Magnum blew them out of the water. Best gig I have ever been to.

In the process of arranging that JRK. Didn't fully grasp where my head is at until this week. I knew I had some issues but thought I could manage them. That is quite clearly not the case. It's way worse then even that post makes it seem in truth. Took some time to think yesterday and realised I haven't felt truly happy for about a year. Before that I can't even remember so yeah kinda scares me a bit.

What's really getting me down is that I've tried reaching out to my so-called friends all week and have been totally ignored. Guess at least now I know where I stand with them. It's a good thing I'm so used to tackling this kind of shit on my own or I'd be even more miserable. Hmm I wonder if that's even possible.

Busy times lately. I got moved to a more demanding position because they saw how fast I caught on. Still learning, but staying occupied and loving it. I'm also training a dog, dog sitting two others, saw Pentagram last night, seeing Anvil tonight, then Chelsea Wolfe on Tuesday and Voivod on Thursday. Life is good.

That's awesome, dude, glad to hear things have worked out so well. Makes the whole family happier, I'm sure.

The only show I'm really hoping to catch right now is Funebrarum with Artificial Brain at St. Vitus. Time for shows is getting scarce! We're leaving early tomorrow morning to look at some apartments. If everything goes right, we'll start moving next month and be fully situated by mid-July. Already started making the rounds of people and places I need to see before we leave. I feel lots of different ways about this. My wife is thrilled, so, that's a good start.

Big change, good luck. I've never lived outside of SLC, so I can't imagine what that would be like.

That's funny that you're seeing the two of them together, as they played back to back last year at MDF, haha. Funebrarum was rad, and Artificial Brain sounded pretty good from the other side of the fence. Wish I would have made it in to catch them properly.

Thanks man! I hope I can catch that show - some other band dropped off and Artificial Brain is the replacement, apparently. But the first flyer I saw said the show was tonight (which I can't do) and only later did I see one for next week. Not entirely sure it's legit, but shows do tend to get shuffled around the odd weekend or bounced from one venue to another, occasionally, so I'm not surprised. I've seen AB a few times and they're always great. Their vocalist, Will, has a great guttural tone and a ton of stage presence. He also just stepped in as the vocalist for Afterbirth, and I'm really looking forward to hearing what they accomplish together.

That makes sense. Cody said that Will told him his style was the direct result of hearing Afterbirth, so having him in the band seems a perfect fit.

Agreed, I'm psyched. He'll be able to keep it in the realm of their existing material and I'm sure he'll be an asset for their live shows. I hope I get to see them at some point.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
