What's on your mind?

Cool deal' date=' I look forward to hearing your new stuff.[/quote'] I will be interested to see how others feel about our new work. It doesn't make a difference to me, it fulfills my need for artistic expression, but it is a bit different. More funeral doom and death metal in the mix than before, but you will definitely recognize our compositional style, melodic progressions, and riffs. I'm excited to finish up the lyrics and start playing live again, especially with a drummer that actually fits our sound.

Damn' date=' sorry to hear that. At your age though, I wouldn't worry, any actual issues would be extremely unlikely.[/quote'] Thank you, but in a hypochondriacs mind, .000001% chance still means cancer cancer CANCER. Sad but true, I started crying like an idiot when my doctor was telling me, I think I made him feel very uncomfortable..............

Things are going very well for Nevertanezra' date=' despite that live gig falling through, but I'm sure that more opportunities will come.[/quote'] ...And when those opportunities come, I hope you will put up a youtube vid of the performance. I understand your not wanting to put out demos or new and as yet not perfected recordings, but video of gigs would not fit into that category.

Yeah Mindy, try not to stress about it. I bet that doctor just knew how much you like to worry, and was just trying to be nice and give you something to worry about. :D

On my mind: thirteen years ago today, Chuck Schuldiner died, too young IMO. Not many people have had the kind of influence he did. I know what I'll be listening to today.

Sad but true, I started crying like an idiot when my doctor was telling me, I think I made him feel very uncomfortable..............[/quote'] What would happen if you started every day by contemplating dying from cancer, or whatever. I'm suggesting a meditation on your mortality. Based on what I've heard, everyone will eventually die, so maybe you could wrap your head around that fact as a given, and get a little more comfortable with it. I hope you find this useful. oh, one other thing... Would you like to try thinking of yourself as a strong fighter ready to take on anything rather then as a victim susceptible to disease and illness. That might help. The very real health threat you are facing is the stress you cause your self by tripping about stuff like this.

I understand your not wanting to put out demos or new and as yet not perfected recordings, but video of gigs would not fit into that category.[/quote'] We're not opposed to doing a demo, that has been the plan for a while. When we were going to record it originally, Edgar had just joined on drums, so we were going to just program drums for the guitars. The guy that recorded us brought the wrong microphone, so we didn't end up keeping the session, so we decided to wait until Edgar was up to speed and record with real drums. As soon as he was, Mitch started coming back to practices, so we've been getting him up to speed. I think that we should now be able to do the demo in the coming weeks, and have it represent us as a whole, as opposed to just Mike and myself. I usually wait until I have a recording to finish lyrics and vocal lines, so I can have something that I can just play different parts over and over again in my ear to fit the phrasing. I'm sure that we'll also have someone record at least one of our live performances when we get back to doing them again. The failed opportunity would have been opening for Incantation and Funerus, but they were not planning on coming this way on their tour schedule. Edgar has been booking shows, so he made them an offer, and they said that if they ended up booking anything in Colorado or Nevada that they would book our date too, but both fell through. It seems like we've been getting more tours through here recently, so I'm sure we'll have something else come through here that we can put our names on.

I have been to two counselors and they did not help. I am thinking I need to try one more time, possibly try a clinical social worker instead or a psychologist and NOT a counselor. People have asked me what I worry most about before, and it is not so much the dying part, it is the slow, painful, suffering, hair falling out, cannot walk, etc etc etc that plagues my mind when thinking about getting cancer, not to mention, I have done nothing with my life yet, except go to school........

So the more you freak out about a statistically insignificant (according to your own words) chance of actually having a serious health problem the more likely you are to encounter them down the road. Just when you were starting to think I wasn't a know-it-all eh?

Oops maybe. My inner hacke. Hacked it. Just kidding
I actually questioned my boys first and it didn't seem like it was them, checked all devices and pc to see if I was signed in by chance. Nothing. I reported it. It did make me laugh though, not the song cause I've never heard it, just the fact of it being the boner song lol

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
