In the case of Metallica, a lot of people talk about St Anger as a bad album but I think many are maybe in denial, the true champion of awfulness is Lulu. I have tried listening to it a few times, but I can't listen to just one whole song. It's a major cringe. What's interesting is that people love to hate St Anger, but very few talk about Lulu, like they want to forget it ever happened.

Esoteric Warfare is bland and lifeless. I agree with you, Ordo's reckless gay thrusting is preferred.

After taking a couple of loads, I'm not really sure what Metallica fans were really expecting. St. Anger isn't good, but it's not nearly as bad as people say it is. But in metal circles, herd is the word.

In '85 Megadeth released Killing is my business... In '86 Metallica released Master of Puppets and Slayer released Reign In Blood. In '87 Anthrax released Among the Living. Each of these 4 albums had a seismic effect on the world of metal with each giving the bedrock to an offshoot of metal; Megadeth helped spawn Speed Metal, Metallica gave mainstream metal a shot in the arm, Slayer released the album that arguably laid the groundwork for Extreme Metal and Anthrax helped create Hardcore and Crossover Metal. It was after these releases that the term 'the big 4' began to be used.
Killing Is my Business...was a snarling angry beast, the band were tight has hell and fed off a Dave Mustaine still smarting after being let go by Metallica, the obvious classic was Mechanix but the album as a whole delivers like a punch in the gut.
Master of Puppets by contrast seemed determined to break the record for the best riffs ever laid down on vinyl. My own personal favourite is probably the least known track 'Leper Messiah' which stomps its way to a conclusion propelled by jagged riffing and James Hetfield's angry sarcasm delivering his disdain for organised religion.
Reign In Blood is simply a beast from beginning to end. The obvious stand-out track is Angel of Death but in reality there's no bad track, it simply crushes everything that came before it with a sound that always teeters right on the line of being out of control without ever actually crossing that line, it gives the album an edge that had never been heard before and rarely since.
Among The Living is to my mind a standout album from a band could that be criticised for producing a fair amount of filler on later albums until For All Kings was released. Every track has that New York punk attitude and creates a stomping masterpiece. Its no surprise that tracks from Among The Living often make a large percentage of the bands live performances.
    Thats my 2p anyway

No worries - you're right, I should've been more precise and say it supported and built on what had gone on before.

Man, oh man where do I start.
    St. Anger - Metallica
Poorly written, poorly recorded and has a terrible mix and sound. Considering that the band feels this took them back to their roots, I think they missed the mark - by a mile.
Criptic Writings and Risk - Megadeth
Simply not Megadeth caliber albums. To "smooth" and "poppy". Not their best.
    X Factor - Iron Maiden
I grade this one on a curve due to it being Blaze's first album with band, but they still had the same writers. Don't know if Harris was trying to not sound like a Bruce led Maiden, but that is what was accomplished with this album. It's good, but not IM good. Virtual IX brought back some of the Maiden sound and feel, but still not the same.
    Path of Totality - Korn
I know a lot of people didn't like this album. It's not that I don't like it, there  are some really good songs on here, but it is definitely my least favorite of their discography. I feel the band lost a little of their sound and musical identity when Brian left, but there is some good stuff in there on the four albums without him.
I believe they found themselves again in "Serenity of Suffering" and just reinforced it with "The Nothing"  the latter being probably one of their heaviest albums.
    Undisputed Attitude - Slayer
Simply put, this is an album Slayer didn't need to do...........

A friend brought this subject up recently and I'll say here what I said to him, if you like the music you like it, should you have to translate all lyrics of a band you enjoy? I personally don't think so.

Hello everyone! I have been making music for a few years now, and this is what I came up with. I don't know how to play the guitar, so I made an EP using Shreddage VST. I was shy about it, because being a keyboardist who listens to metal music a bit incompatible, but I did my best and I hope you like it! Any criticism is appreciated!

Youthanasia is probably my favorite Megadeth release for the same reasons that you mention,  The atmosphere and emotion of the songs actually worked well with Mustaine's voice on the whole thing.

I agree with this. Great tone, great delivery, great sense of how to put a vocal hook together. Yeah, he's got some cheesy mannerisms, but at least he sounds like himself.

Fabulous Disaster. That bizarre riffing and drumming cadence combined with those venomous Zetro vocal lines trumps the more straightforward assault of Bonded By Blood for me.

Re: Megadeth & Metallica For a while now, Mustaines voice has sounded like shit. . He's exhausted, And it sounds whiny.. Hetfield has lost some of his punch, But it sounds better than mustaine.. As a Metallica fan, i have to say Metallica, But Megadeth is a good band too.

How did I not know about As Humanity Fades? Just listening on YouTube now and it's great. Obviously too early to judge which album I prefer, but thanks for the recommendation either way!
Oh, and please feel free to merge this into the main thread.

We'll probably be covering a bunch of ground we've already gone over in the main rec thread, but I think it might be cool to have a strictly old-school thread.
Deteriorate - Rotting In Hell: this album kicks ass, early 90s DM from Pennsylvania. Kind of a "warm" sound, savage vocals, and riffs that explore a lot of what the era had to offer - aggressive chunk, evil-sounding tremolo sections, drawn-out doomy bits, and the occasional creepy melody. Not reinventing any wheels, but catchy and fun.

Scattered Remnants - Procreating Mass Carnage: this "demo" sounds like shit in a good way. Dark, brutal, and filthy, occasionally brooding but mostly pummeling.

Broken Hope - The Bowels Of Repugnance: I'm not fond of their bland "comeback" stuff, but this album has personality. Deep gutturals, brutal chunk, plodding death, blasting grind, all in good fun.

Ripping Corpse - Dreaming With The Dead: technically accomplished but still raw, this 1991 album is another that exemplifies what DM had to offer at the time. Aggressive and somewhat thrashy vocals, tough-as-nails riffing, energetic songwriting - these guys were poised to go places, but apparently were turned down for a contract because they didn't have the right look. Members would go on to Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, and Dim Mak. EDIT - full album stream got taken down, so here's one track that's still up:

Amorphis - Privilege Of Evil: we'll leave the USA for a moment. This band may need no introduction, but they've all but left their roots behind, and those roots were fucking awesome. Grim, dark, and moody, this recording in particular captures most of what I love about Finnish DM, without the polish of the more professional recording on "The Karelian Isthmus". See if it doesn't draw you in.

I'll add more later - one other thing, for Morta Skuld I actually prefer "As Humanity Fades". For some reason "Dying Remains" gets the props, but I think the follow-up is stronger and more mature.
