Nephilim given a Damn from blaaacdoommmmfan in 80's and 90's metal vs. nowdays metal
I think it really depends. There was a lot of shit metal back then too, we just don't remember it and it didn't stand the test of time. Today we have it all at our fingertips, literally. You can go to youtube or google and find just about anything, including good AND bad bands. Sadly, as metal became more "mainstream" the record companies pushed the acts that they could sell to the lowest common denominator, which tends to be easy listening type metal. I LIKE that you have to search for good metal in a sea of crap. It makes finding that gem of a band that much more satisfying.

Nephilim gave a Damn to Parker in How important is a band name
I agree with FA. I guess it's kinda like judging a book by it's cover, but you kinda can't help it. I have never listened to the group Soil Work, because I think it's a stupid name; it makes me think of farming, which doesn't seem very metal to me. However, if some one recommended them to me, and their description of the music sounded like something I'd dig, I'd check them out.

A bit. I'll give almost anything a chance, but I'm less likely to click on something with a name that turns me off unless it's been recommended to me.

Nephilim gave a Damn to FatherAlabaster in Is doom metal extreme?
A PhD? Huh, where do they offer that course of study? Sounds fun, at least.
I agree with Macabre, you've got to cut it down more finely if you're going to understand it. Not only are there different and nearly unrelated subgenres within doom, but there are bands that mix and match elements to a degree that makes it hard to say exactly what they "are", if that's even worth it. I think it's a mistake to think of it as a genre with definite boundaries. You need a Euler diagram.
FWIW you'll find similar distinctions within DM and black metal. Some of that gets pretty subjective, too. We've talked about it a bunch, but never really put together a definitive chart.

Nephilim gave a Damn to MacabreEternal in Is doom metal extreme?
Ironically I think you miss out on the whole concept of sub-genres. I'd class Primitive Man as more Sludge which I would deem to be more extreme than Doom. Again death/doom is also very extreme. Also I would apply some relativity to the discussion. For their time Sabbath were considered extreme in terms of their sound in comparison to the relatively safe sounds of what was just rock at the time. Nowadays replicators of that sound don't come across as being extreme because we have such extreme genres and sounds around as par for the course.
P.S FORUM ANNOUNCEMENT - BAN to thread please, that's BAN to thread.

Nephilim gave a Damn to Parker in Viking Doom
I haven't listened to these bands, but the Metal Archives list them as Viking and Doom:
Herjalf
Ereb Altor
Querimonia
As I said, I haven't heard them, so I can't really recommend them; just did a quick search of the archives.

Nephilim gave a Damn to the_thrashing in Stranger Things and Breaking Bad in metal
In my opinion the greatest tv show ever was Married with Children. That would be sweet if there was a NO MAAM inspired band with a singer that looks like Al Bundy and songs about hooters and beer.

Nephilim gave a Damn to FatherAlabaster in Intro Riffs.
There are so many good ways to lead into a song. I don't care which way a band chooses as long as it works, and they change it up over the course of the album.

Nephilim gave a Damn to Valfar in Worst black metal bands
Re: Worst black metal bands
Totally agree, Principles of evil....and Dusk and her embrace were amazing albums, but just lost interest in them when Midian came out, just cant take them serious anymore! -
Nephilim gave a Damn to RelentlessOblivion in Thrash Metal VS Melodic Death Metal
You seem to have many "all time favourite" bands and a slight problem distinguishing genres. tbdm for example (a truly loathsome band) are deathcore, Vader are death metal, Carcass were pioneers of Goregrind. The two genres are not really comparable to be honest. I own all of two melodeath albums as opposed to I dunno fifty or sixty thrash albums.

Nephilim gave a Damn to RelentlessOblivion in METALLICA vs megadeth
Re: METALLICA vs megadeth are you telling me Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying, So Far, So Good, So What? and Rust In Peace are somehow less metal then Countdown To Extinction, Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings? dude early Megadeth is far heavier then early Metallica. But again I say people should just let this whole Megadeth vs Metallica thing go, it's a non-issue from where I sit since Mustaine has finally let the grudge go

Nephilim gave a Damn to MetalRevolutionary49 in METALLICA vs megadeth
Re: METALLICA vs megadeth Metallica for their early stuff (anything up to Master of Puppets) before they became mainstream and non-metal, then Megadeth for their later stuff when they became real metal. So really Megadeth picked up from where Metallica left

Nephilim gave a Damn to Ikard in Skills vs. Personality
When i first got into heavy music, i was really into punk rock music. As a result personality and showmanship were really important to me both as a musician and a listener. That mentality has transitioned into all the genres i listen to whether it be folk, jazz, punk, metal, etc. You can be as skilled as you want if your music lacks attitude it wont grab me. I'll be mildly impressed at best.

Nephilim gave a Damn to Iceni in 80's and 90's metal vs. nowdays metal
I really can't stand it when people claim that good metal died in the 80s and early 90s. There is some superb metal being made nowadays and there's no point turning up one's nose at it. As a matter of fact, it typically demonstrates that said person simply hasn't been looking around enough. If I'm perfectly honest, I prefer the metal being made nowadays. The kind of excellent prog and tech-death I've heard was a lot rarer in those eras than it is now.

Nephilim gave a Damn to ReturntoCarthage in Blackened Death metal
Its a trick term that masks musical talent for playing random notes and sucking the dicks of Blasphemy and Angelcorpse albums because you have no idea how to write good riffs. Shit bands like Revenge, Proclamation, and Morboresidad are all in this style of black metal. Characteristics include: hyper fast blasting, randomly strummed notes, and male goats that the band members fuck because they are homosexuals.
