BlutAusNerd given a Damn from True Belief in New Purchases/Acquisitions
From the show last week:
Immolation - Close To a World Below
Immolation - Atonement
I was short on funds and didn't grab anything at the Rotten Sound/Ringworm show, but did have a trade show up with:
The Sarcophagus - Towards the Eternal Chaos
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
...and then made an unexpected trip to a local record store. I wasn't looking to buy anything, but I couldn't resist seeing this used for $6:
Raven -All For One

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from Skull_Kollektor in Top Five First Wave Black Metal Albums
Absolutely. Early Destruction, Kreator, and Sodom are all black metal. Destruction dropped pretty much all of it for the straight up thrash of Release From Agony. The first Running Wild may not wholly qualify, but at least a few songs on it should, especially the Mercyful Fate flavored S.O.S.

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from salmonellapancake in Are [insert band name here] metal?
Crust is one of many punk/metal fusion genres, and as a fusion genre, where it falls on the spectrum is determined by how a band mixes the sounds. Some bands put more punk in, others put more metal in, but most crust seems to favor the punk side.

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from Requiem in What Are You Listening To?
I'm usually against re-recordings, but this one is absolutely worth having. The earliest works are hard to find, and the re-recorded tracks from Under the Moonspell, which I do have, sound nice cleaned up a bit. It almost seems more like a black metal return album from a classic band than a collection of old material with better production and performances.

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from salmonellapancake in Top Five First Wave Black Metal Albums
The debut from Master's Hammer is recognized as the first black metal album of the second wave. As such, it doesn't make much sense on a first wave list, but it is one of the best black metal albums of all time either way.

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from Requiem in Your Favourite Year in Metal
I'm sure that if I was to pick a year on the earlier side of the 80's, it would be 83 or 84. Not that there's anything at all wrong with the first couple of years of the decade, but a lot more opens up if you give it a few years.

Exactly. No matter how many black metal albums that I accumulate (several hundred at this point), simply nothing ever tops DMDS for me. It's exactly what a black metal album should be IMO.

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from MacabreEternal in Your favorite death metal bands?
No, I'm not saying that at all. What I'm saying is that death metal is defined by the music, not the vocals, and it's the musical differences in Seven Churches that separate it from thrash metal as the first death metal album more than the vocals. That's not to say that death metal vocals aren't part and parcel to the music on display, but they're nowhere near as defining as the riffs, melodic/chord progressions, and the songwriting. You're right about me shooting from the hip with Massacra, it was my assumption that much wouldn't have changed in the year between Final Holocaust and Enjoy the Violence. I know that you weren't trying to assert that it was a better album, just one influenced by it, and I'm sure it probably was just like any other death metal album of the time. I tend to see this type of statement accompanied by a more myopic view of the progression of death metal, so that's why I responded that way.
Good discussion either way, glad to have you here for it. We have needed a good new user to jump-start some posting again.

True. Quorthon claims he had never heard Venom when he recorded his debut, and I call bullshit.

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from Skull_Kollektor in Hello from Milan, Italy
I'm with you on the early heavy metal stuff. It doesn't have to be smoldering from start to finish to be heavy metal, and also, heavy metal wasn't created in a vacuum. Sabbath gets the most press for inventing it because they produced the longest string of heavy metal albums of the initial explosion, with bands like Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Lucifer's Friend, Sir Lord Baltimore, and others either going into more rock oriented territory after their debut albums, or disbanding before making a solid career run.

BlutAusNerd given a Damn from Parker in Hello from Milan, Italy
If they would have stuck to those more metal numbers, like Twisted Sister's Under the Blade or Skid Row's Slave to the Grind, it probably wouldn't be so reviled among most metal fans. The problem is that some of these bands could squeeze out some metal numbers like this, and then fuck them up with sappy ballads and being more concerned with image than songwriting. Especially considering the talent of many of the guitar players and vocalists of the era (David Coverdale did front Deep Purple Mk III after all), it seems like a case of potential squandered on commercially viable pop/hard rock and a fast paced lifestyle.
