Wacken Open Air is a summer open air heavy metal music festival. This come from WiKi. Obviously, It has emphasized the HEAVY METAL right? But why there are some folk bands on the open air? Someone said they were invited as the World Music players. So it can be that? What were they thinking? "Oh my god! Fans will be exposed to killing sounds over 4 hours, we'd better do something." "Yep, why not to add a folk band and calm them down?" "Oh, that's a good idea! Now we can save their ears!" More and more music festial are becoming complex, or diversified. And I know it can't let all fans satisfied. However, why Wacken make it complicatied? Those folk bands are definitely awesome, but they are not belong to this wonderful metal field. Someone said they keep the world and music together by this way. So as the time pass, they'll continue to invite the blues, Rap, and fucking Justin Bieber. OK, that's it. Maybe I go to extreme.

First of all, your reference point is Wikipedia which is the single most flawed point of information on the internet because it is written by just about anybody and is poorly moderated so any old shit gets up there. Secondly, I am not sure how old you are but your post lacks maturity, if you only want to listen to metal music then fine simply go and do something else when the folk music is on. Bleating on here about unfair it is that Wacken's organisers have ruined the festival for you is defeatist and pointless! And the Justin Bieber reference is ridiculous if it bothers you that much - don't go!

Hey Devil4876, Nice to see you post again, but I'm a little confused as well. Are you not the guy from China who posted a link to some Chinese folk metal? Maybe that was someone else. Anyway I enjoyed the Chinese folk music, though it was strange. Is there any possibility of your going to waken? I would have to admit that if I was to organize a metal show, I mean a really major festival I would think myself cleaver to warm things up with a little folk music. Why not. In fact if someone wants to hire me to put together a metal festival, I would start by booking a troupe of tyco drummers. Any takers?

Thanks Mere, that's very nice of you! we should have Gorbo-fest right here on the forum. I think that there will be no laptop or PC for me to use in Japan ( I leave late tomorrow night) so you may see me make an appearance on the "how the fuck do you manage with tapatalk" thread as I try to learn how to participate in the forum on an I-whatnot device. I promise you a festival at some point though, and I'll go ahead and book the first and later the most awesomeist tyco drumming troupe that I come across.

Well, I must explain. Some word I wrote in this thread just for joking. Maybe it's excessive, but I swear, no malice. Ignoring the Wiki, my point is that Wacken is a metal festival as we know, so I just can't understand why they invite these non-metal bands in. It's like we go to watch the World Cup but they say "the first half is done, now let's watch a basketball match before the next half." Yep, it can be that, no problem, but don't you feel it's too silly? I love any kinds of music except the pop, and metal is the best. I still want to go to Wacken even Justin Bieber is having a show in there. By the way, I'm 24. No matter what Wacken's organisers do, I'll accept it. Maybe we have some disagreement, but I respect what you said. I hope you know that.

yes, it's me, the chinese guy. Thank you for remembering me, you are really kind.:D I didn't mean the folk metal. Let me show you a band from China. Hanggai It's a Mongolian band. They play the mongolian music with modern equipments and their native instruments. They are good. They are awesome. I'm really prond of them. But they are not a metal band. No distortion, no overload and no power chord. They were invited by Wacken for their characteristic national elements. Meanwhile, Wacken also invite other national music bands from all around the world. Here's a vedio you can check. ???? - ??Wacken Open Air?????(??)?????????????????? Anything the Wacken do is OK. I just don't know why wacken invite non-metal bands to show while Wacken's announce they are a metal music festival. Well, maybe it's cool. But if they put a cuty boy, you know who I mean, no offense to him, it's not cool anymore. Would you do me a favor? I can't view many foreign website, like youtube, facebook and twitter in China. But I don't know whether you people can view many chinese website. So maybe these links will fail. That's terrible. Would you have a look and then tell me whether it works? And what's tyco drummer?

I believe he may be referring to Taiko drumming. Taiko is the Japanese name, but there are similar styles originating from all over Asia (although I do not know what they are). I must admit I'm quite a fan of Taiko, I recent went to go see Joji Hirota live (he is a world-renowned percussionist).

Your link worked fine for me. The Mongolian group seems like a cool palette clenser for a metal show. I saw a Tuvan group once called something like Hun-Hur-tu. It was similar with the polyphonic singing (and just as horse obsessed), Very cool, and there is definitely a place for that kind of vocal in metal, in fact I bet someone like BAN could cite an example of that already published in the metal world.

Thanks for the help with spelling JFK36. I think the Taiko is hella metal. watch?annotation_id=annotation_274086&feature=iv&src_vid=fWg6OLqHlNM&v=Q9kzrrw6FVY Sorry, Devil4876, to post another youtube video, and I'm very sorry that the site is not available to you. I'm sure you can find lots of Japanese drumming on the Youku site, and can navigate it much better that I.

If they are bringing in "ethnic" music of any kind I would call that kind of branching out just proof that Metalheads are far more accepting and open than the general public give them credit for. Moreover if it doesn't work than it won't last long, but it's nice to see them try something off the beaten track.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
